So, I was stuck with only a bad lense...I'm expecting good photos from the pros that came!
First off, a BIG thank you to everyone for bringing STUFF! Food, cheese, bread, wine, beer, more food.....
I met some new friends, and got to catch up with old friends! We laughed a LOT! REbecca corrupted right and left. My neighbors are more confused than ever ("you see that little red house? Satan lives there!")
Just put up a few ballons with "Skeptic Party" and next thing you know you are worshiping the cloven hoofed beast of darkness. As if that is ALL we do at skeptic parties.
First off, there was a little surprise from Truthseeker and it seems the ENTIRE country of Canada...a cake for Larry's birthday!!! Thanks TS, because we all enjoyed a bite!
let's start with Rebecca corrupting the young....
I call this photo, "The Two Dianas"

of course, this was all so everyone could meet, or meet again, one of the forum favorites NOVA LAND!!!
He is fun, polite, smart, a great cook, and apple expert. So he brought along a bunch of apples that HE himself had picked to share with us, along with many different apple dishes he had spent all Saturday cooking!

And I like the smilie face in the photo.

yes the pumpkin is vomiting!
It's a tradition at my house. The neighborhood children expect it, and the parents use it as a warning of the danger of eating too much candy.
Let's see...we have Sarah,in yellow - with Kitten next to her. Boo is wearing a "Boo" shirt, Larry the birthday boy, mumchup, and Mrs.Beady.

These guys had fun playing Mythbusters. That's what you get when the Diet Coke starts foaming out when you've got the cap only tightened one turn. ;) Four to six Menots is all it takes for a 2-liter bottle. We dropped in a whole roll for the third bottle, but the foam came out so fast I couldn't get the cap on at all.

Hmmmm.....
What if we wrap the mentos in husblas (gelatine in thin wafers, used for puddings etc)?
That way, we should have plenty of time to screw the cap back on. We will need some sort of trigger to get the cap off, though, because otherwise the bottle will explode...
Hmmm......I think I will do a little experiment...

*PLING!*
ICE!
Freeze small cubes of fizzed coke with a quarted Mentos in each. That way, there won't be the immediate reaction.
Open bottle, use a straw to suck out a little coke to make room for the cubes, carefully dump the ice-Mentos in, put cap on, wait.
The coke should be as warm as possible, to make the ice melt as quickly as possible. Leave out in sun for a while, before preparing.
I'm a genius.

That's what we did, hence the vertical stream, but I couldn't tighten the cap fast enough to prevent leakage around it.

But anyone else that wishes to offer is welcome too!

No.
If I ever get a steady beau, I'm taking us to Europe on a vacation. I sometimes travel with one of my girlfriends, but she doesn't like: history, site-seeing, wine, cheese, exotic foods, foreigners, so she's not much fun  I took my sons to France and England a couple years ago, but I'm apparently at the embarrassing age now.
However, I do tend to earn a lot of free tickets on Southwest Airlines, and have been known to part with them for a good cause...

Actually everything else in the place is really, really cool. Huge cliffs with wolves standing watch, frozen winter tree limbs, giant beaded... decorative... things... , lots of really cool waterfalls, a swanky martini bar on top of an onyx mountain, under a planetarium. Everything except for the giant sperm-tree made of blown glass. That thing is really weird.
I don't actually gamble myself. I go there with visiting relatives/friends, to buy Godiva chocolate and to the restaurants. Once in a while for a show too.
The other casino (Foxwoods) is entirely hideous. Since I don't gamble, I never go there for anything.

On that note:
I think I've thought up a way to get the lid on with the mentos inside, so they can be inroduced to the soda with the lid already on. (with a small hole in the lid, like Jeff did.)
I'm going to experiment with my Mom. She's clever, so if my idea doesn't quite work she can help me refine it.

I drove for a grocery wholesaler (yeah, the one from Brattleboro) while attending college. It used to amaze me how, every time we would have a threat of a snow storm, people would go into panic shopping mode.
They would go to the store and load up with bread, milk, and water. And after the storm would hit, the roads might be bad for, what, maybe twenty-four hours? The folks in southern New England would do this crazy shopping as if it was going to be a major catastrophe, and yet, most live within a five mile radius of a supermarket, and maybe within a mile of a convenience store.
It's not as if the stores were going to run out of supplies. I know they wouldn't because whatever the weather, I was still out there in my truck just plugging along, trying to make the next stop.
I can't imagine how those same people would react if they were liiving where I do now, where a trip to the store can be a 100 mile round trip.
But, then again, all these photos have made me a little homesick for a visit back east. I guess I'll have to take a trip to Denver this weekend to remind me what driving in the city is like.
:D
ETA: Maybe it's not the salt air, maybe it's all the Dunkin' Donuts coffee being consumed while driving.

In Texas, if you approach someone from behind and are travelling much faster, they will generally pull over to the right so you can pass them without changing lanes.

Er, yes and no. Part of Texas gets quite a bit of snow. Around this part, not too much, so people aren't familiar with it. However,it's not the snow. We get 'black ice' where snow or sleet melts rapidly and freezes into a nice thick coating of solid ice. Or a heavy rain falls as the temperature drops below freezing. Snow offers a bit of traction, the ice is a slick coating. Couple that with the fact that no one owns any sort of studded tire, chains, it can be very dangerous. It seems to happen in the afternoon, so all of the 4-6 million people who live in the area are all trying to get home at the same time. If it happens at night, most places will close or have delayed openings.
We have lots of foreigners, too. (People not born in Texas). However, if you come here to make your home and are neighborly and don't trash-talk Texas, you get to be an honorary Texan pretty quick. We'll let you in. From what I've heard, you can live in NE 30 years and still be considered an outsider.

Fact of the matter is, if you, your kin, or someone you know is a "flatlander" (kind of pronounced "god dam flaaatlanda"*), i.e., from MA, you'll never be accepted as a NH resident, no matter how many generations you live there.
Pretending to be a local in some areas will get you shot. That's a no-shi(rule8)er. Think you are going to fish on the Maine coast when your great grandfather didn't fish there? First time will get your fishing line or anchor line cut. Try again, and after that you'll be dodging lead. And no, it doesn't matter that your grandfather has lived in that town for 75 years.

Flatlander to Native Vermonter: "Well, I may be from 'away' but my kids were born here. That should make them Vermonters, right?"

mumchup, I grew up in Indiana, and Susan grew up on Long Island. We are both always amused when we get a little frozen stuff on the ground here in north Texas.
You can just grab a lawn chair and head out to your favorite busy intersection and watch the near misses and crashes.
Everyone seems to think that we just fine if they drive at some arbitrary slow speed. This speed being too slow and frustrating in the open areas and still too fast to stop in time when they come intersections. They creep around slow all over the place holding up traffic, and still managed to slide through most intersections.
I generally prefer to drive when the conditions near their worst. As conditions get worse the road starts to clear off, then I can just manage the road conditions instead of all the other idiots.

there are so many new people living here, that I often worry it's the natives that are in the minority.
I am considered a native of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, even though I was born in DC. Basically, the family was kicked out of Scotland and stayed where the boat landed. I can do the accent perfectly, and honestly, my relatives that still live on the Eastern Shore were studied by people from Oxford that were documenting "Old English". They joked that my relatives understood Shakespeare better than the average student at their fine school of higher learning. "Fall" and "Mad" changed meaning over the years in the UK, but not where my relatives live!
Oh, if you pump breaks, or your horse gets sick, it's the native of NH or Vermont that will come over and fix things for you. People may move here as it is a wonderful area to live, but it makes the natives feel good that THEY really run things. What they don't like is that their kids can't afford to buy a house here, because house prices have rocketed since so many flatlanders have discovered it is a great place to live.
Hey people, check with Skeptic Scott...seems he has something in the works...so if you missed Apple Days you won't want to miss the next get together.

I have to admit I jokingly shot one of the arrows at Kitten2 and hit her in the eye! It really hurt!
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye!
Larry is a man of nature, he would be the one to make the perfect shot. Though it should be admited little Boo junior also hit the apple. With bow and arrows from the dollar store I think that is something! I did have a skeleton with an apple for a target, but Merc just VOLUNTEERED.
Now Merc is a real MAN.

Can you chuck a schrod on the barbie in New England?
Could someone translate this into English, please?

Scrod sticks to the barbie. We grill lobsters up here.I've seen them - they are as small as our shrimp. So you are, effectively, chucking shrimp on the barbie.
Not barbie as in the doll, mind.

You might be thinking of those anemic little rock lobsters. At my local supermarket you can get lobsters up to a couple feet long and 10 pounds or more.

Sigh.... looks like much fun was had by all. Alas, no photos of the little Vancouver meet we had at my place in September right after the cruise...

A chance to sledgehammer Sylvia Browne!

At the very least she will get a terrific headache!
No wait, she already has 2 terrific headaches called Randi and www.stopsylviabrowne.com!!!!

Guns are safe, aren't they? ;)
They are. 12 millions Texans can't be wrong.
Let's see 12 million Texans, with a typical average of 12 guns a piece (at least, that's what I have...)
Ok, that's a lot of guns. And hardly any of the barns around here have holes in them.

Are you saying you can't hit the broad side of a barn? ;)

the point is that if you hit what you are aiming at the barn will be just fine.
And broad is kind of a not so PC term in this day and age please!

Actually, there are very few barns in Dallas...
My father in law and his four brothers all served in WWII, one of them died in Italy. One of them brought back a machine gun from Germany, with ammo, and they were all out shooting up the garage on their farm with it. Dan says to James "Hey, did anyone take the car out first?"
That would be 'no'.

So did they paint the target on the garage after making the holes?

oh good one!!!!
trust me, my neighbors have had gunshots through their windows! One mom ran out and yelled, "can't you see the playset and sandbox here! Why are you shooting!" The hunter replied, "There was a turkey in your sandbox."
He still got a stiff fine. Usually though it is newbie hunters that don't follow the rules. NH and Vermont wannabees.
It should also be noted we have a bumper crop of turkies this year. And not only do we have a lot of new hunters, we have an awful lot of gobblers too.

I'll have to ask :) these were four boys who were orphaned, raised themselves, and were just a 'little' wild...

I have perfected a simple way to get get the cap on. With the mentos inside. I will bring some supplies to the Newtonmas party. I'm about to go outside in a liitle bit to see if I can get the bottle to explode!

I can't say the experiment was a failure, soda still shot up a good 15 feet. But I am now fairly certain that it just doesn't build up enough pressure to burst the bottle. I think the ideal size for the hole in the cap is about 1/8th inch. A smaller hole causes the stream to become more of a spray.

Check the link I posted up above. It comes complete with instructions and a belagio style display. =o)
If you want to get the bottles to explode, then dry ice* is the ticket. ;) :whistling
(*notice. Do not try this amusing stunt. Ever! Do not try it on a rainy day. Do not try it on a sunny day. Do not try it with friends. While drinking beer. At shindigs. At parties. Bar Mitvahs. While eating hot dogs or wieners. Do not attempt while driving heavy machinery. Most importantly if you do happen to find yourself inexplicably happening to make a dry ice bomb, wear goggles, ;) )

Yeah, I saw that one awhile back. What I did was come up with a way to get the soda to shoot out a small hole in the cap. That's what they did at the Apple Pie party, but they couldn't get the lid on fast enough. So I devised a way to get the lid on before the mentos drop into the soda. I didn't really expect the bottle to explode... but I was hoping anyway.

I wonder what kind of geyser would be produced when dropping a piece of dry ice into a full (warm) bottle of soda with a drilled cap. Maybe add a little weight to the bottom of it so that it sink quickly.
If only I had the space to try it out. =o/
Eh, no big deal, I can always clean the ceiling. :D

Maybe we should have a dry ice/liquid nitrogen (daytime) / Sodium (http://www.theodoregray.com/PeriodicTable/Stories/011.2/) (night time) party. They are all kinds of fun little and BIG things to do with the three. =o)

I thought the results were plenty good. Then it got me thinking that I hadn't played with mentos/dietcoke yet. And since I'd already personally witnessed the effect at the party, I had to come up with a "problem" to solve as an excuse to waste food. (assuming that either diet soda or mentos is food)
