View Full Version : "Bead Cave," anyone?

Oooooh, I'm so excited! I get to go to TAM!

So, I'm wondering something:

I'm a bead artisan, and have been doing beadworking for almost 15 years.
I have a lot of beads. Let me say that again, just to clarify:

I. have. a. LOT. of. beads.

And cordage, needles, findings, other supplies. I could keep a decent number of folks occupied for a long time. I can teach beading, too,

Would anyone, male or female, be interested in attending a Bead Cave during TAM? A Bead Cave is just a bunch of people sitting in one place, doing beadwork, learning beadwork, or just oohing and ahhing over how many danged beads I have.

If anyone would like to share this for a few hours at TAM, I am happy to load up my gear and bring it all.

And it would be free. No charge, nada. Come make stuff with my beads that you can take home with you! Come steal my beads!

So. Let me know. There is no max/min: just one person would be enough for me.

Will we need the beads to toss to the skepchicks at the forum party (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=65646)?

Sling,

I know there are some serious knitters on the board - here and on Skepchick. Hopefully there isn't some stupid turf war over hobbies, but I would think the two groups might get along just fine. IIRC, Fowlsound's new spouse (avhienda - spelling?) is a knitter. Just a thought.

CT, cool! I have a knitted beaded bag a friend made for me. I also have a friend who crochets wire.

Crafters tend to get along. It's easier to steal ideas from people who will actually talk to you. ;)

I do heavy-duty quilting, but the annual international quilting festival in Houston usually has about 35,000 people go through the doors each year. Maybe I'll bring my needlepoint instead, it's more portable.

cool Geek. you need to post photos of your quilts~

I was more heavy duty when I was designing. But, seriously, a few visits to the Vermont Quilt Festival did me in...though my Alice in Wonderland redwork design (adaptation I should add....) does still do rather well.

But after I went to a real quilt show I was like "I do NOT know how to quilt!"

I'd love to see photos!

My best friend took up knitting, crocheting, and wire bending stuff this past year, and is currently obsessed with it. When she made a doily, I almost called off the friendship, until she explained that crocheting was the new uber-coolness. I still don't believe that part, but she puts up with all my dorky crap so I guess I can put up with receiving things like a crocheted cactus with a smiley face in a pot for my birthday. She used to get me computer games.

I quilt too, my quilts are a bit out there.

I am sure we could have fun at the Skepchicks party with all sorts of craft stuff. Not sure I could bring my quilting stuff with me, though. The quilt I am working on now is large.

It would be fun to learn how to do beading. Not that I need any other hobbies, but I am always curious to learn more.

This quilt is called "Concrete thought and utter nonsense"

NO WAY, Kochanski. I can't believe how cool that quilt is. I'm serious.

No, slingblade, bring your beads. It does sound cool. I would like to learn how it is done. :)

Of course, before you tote a bunch of stuff, see if others want to try too. I don't want you to tote all that if I am the only one.

I won't be bringing any quilting with me, I will be bringing games, though.

Thank you! There are over 300 fabrics in that one. These are NOT your grandma's quilts. I don't like Aunt Bea OR her quilts! None of that scrappy pastel farmhouse cutsey look for me (Sunbonnet Sue Must Die) The one of the web site was my 'headboard' over my bed for several years until I could afford a real one. These are not my quilts, but represent the kinds I like

Sorry, I have no idea what that even means...

Thank you! There are over 300 fabrics in that one. These are NOT your grandma's quilts. Are you familiar with Sue Pierce's project "The Art Quilt - A Full Deck"?

I collect unusual playing cards, so the exhibit was of particular interest to me.

Here is a page about it on my playing card web site. (http://members.aol.com/blgupc/blgupc/artquilt/deck.htm)

There is a similar project where a group of cross-stitch artists designed a deck of cards as well.

Yep, I actually got see a few of those, after the deck was broken up. I wish I had talent...or at least, some ARTISTIC talent.

Sling, if I go to TAM (I'm comtemplating a trip to Egypt instead) I'd love to learn beadwork from you. I just recently started to play around with beads and it is addictive. Just in 2 months I've sent Fire Mountain Gems a lot of my money! I also could teach people to do Viking Wire Knitting (http://www.beadextravaganza.com/html/viking_knit_and_beyond.html) if there's any interest. It requires few materials and is a very portable craft.

Wow! I wanna go to TAM! I wanna to go to slingblade's Bead Cave! I wanna quilt with the masters Geek Goddess and Kochanski!

Seriously. I am in awe of the talent! I do applique and make quilted wall hangings, but they are not nearly as beautiful as what Geek Goddess and Kochanski have shown. Wow! Time is at such a premium for me right now so that crafts have had to take a back seat. One of these days I'll pick it back up.

Supercorgi, I hope you do go to TAM, but I completely see a trip to Egypt being the first choice. :D

If you do go, I will be delighted to teach you some stitches. I even have tutorials you can take home with you!

Whee, quilters and beaders and skeptics, oh my!

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of many people, hubby and I are indeed going to be at TAM. :yahoo :yahoo :yahoo

I've decided I will teach an easy, fun beaded pin that we can wear at TAM and after. I have all the materials needed, except sufficient tools.

If you are coming to the Bead Cave, please try to bring a pair of ROUND-NOSE PLIERS (http://www.save-on-crafts.com/rounnosplier.html).

If you have any beads of your own, or some old costume jewelry you wouldn't mind tearing down for components, bring it along. Anything with a hole can be incorporated into this pin.

See you at TAM! Wheeeeeee!

KittyKatKarma! :(

Some other folks who aren't going are joining me in a bead swap called a Bead Fairy. I fill a box or envelope with beady stuff, and I send it to the next person on the list. She then takes out whatever she wants--everything, if she wants it--but must replace each item with something equivalent in number and value from her own bead stash. Then she sends it to the next person (lather, rinse, repeat), until finally the box comes back to me. With any luck, everything has been replaced at least once. We all get a bunch of new stuff!

Not sure when we plan to start, but after Xmas might be good. It could be a pain to go to the post office for the next three weeks. :(

The more people who sign up, the more fun it is. In a couple of months, we can start another round, and someone else on the list will start the box/envelope off.

We're discussing it in Community, if you want to play!

I want to join the bead fairy, if people don't mind posting to the UK!:dc_biggrin:

Wonderful quilts in this thread, by the way. I was not even aware that quilts were made in non-traditional patterns.

Years ago, I would participate in fabric swaps on the newsgroups (let's see, rec.arts.textiles-quilting, something like that). Sometimes we would also swap actual quilt blocks, but I found that many of the blocks I received were very plain or too traditional. The fabric swaps were interesting, though. I have over 1,000 different fabrics.

wow, totally in awe. Keep me in the loop, though I'm not sure what kinds of stuff to bring! I wonder if Vegas has a beading shop?

Sadly, my quilting was for pattern making...this pattern and quilt is in a Xmas book put out by Miniature Quilts magazine.

It was designed to be a beginner simple quilt, and a series of classes was put out around it. So there are probably a bizillion of this quilt in the world!

sometimes the problem is you make what you are asked, but what you would want (this does not hang in my house, in fact most of my quilts the pattern maker owns).

Still, for a "simple beginner applique" it works.

but I feel ashamed with the REAL quilters here on the forum!

Yes. We drove by it, but I can't remember for sure where it was. I think (but I'm far from sure) that it was on Industrial Rd. I also think but am not sure that it had a really creative original name. Something like "The Bead Store"...

That is a very sweet quilt! I have quite a few that are very simple patterns. They are very homey and cuddly. As soon as I find the cable to my camera around here, I'll post a couple
