Iran's leader urged to accept he is not God's envoy
......

The move follows a week of protests and riots in Tehran in which pro-democracy demonstrators clashed with police and vigilantes who support the hardline clerical regime. The protests witnessed unprecedented condemnation of Khamenei, including calls for his death, in a land where criticism of the supreme leader is punishable by imprisonment.

The latest demonstrations were again concentrated around Tehran university's main campus.

Protesters converged on the area in cars, as they have been doing since the gathering of a few hundred students on Tuesday night grew into nightly protests by thousands of people.
Hardline Islamic vigilantes, some carrying assault rifles and wearing bullet-proof vests, patrolled streets near the campus.

Gunshots were heard near the university late on Sunday but there are no reports of any casualties.

The vigilantes, loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have attacked demonstrators with clubs, knives and chains on previous nights.

Hard to imagine the guts it takes to take a stand in a country without freedom of speech or seperation of church and state.

What's next, catholics who don't have to worry about dying for their beliefs protesting for the pope to say he is not god's envoy?

I won't hold my breath for that one. These students in Iran have my utmost respect for challenging an establishment that they know has no qualms about killing them.

I think Liberty is going to chalk one up in the 'win' column in Iran in the next few months. I hope it happens with as little violence as possible.

Didn't college students play a large part in the overthrow of the Shah?

A mind expanded by an idea can never go back to its original size.

Hopefully their protests will be heard by the rest of the Iranian people, and hopefully noone will believe the pathetic claim that the US is behind these demonstrations. I'll certainly keep my eye on that situation.

Peter :)
