View Full Version : Newtonmas Party in Massachusetts, 9 December 2006
SkepticScott
12th October 2006, 06:54 PM
Hi everyone,
I'll be hosting a Newtonmas* potluck get-together at my house on Saturday, 9 December. Festvities will start at about 11 a.m., or whenever people arrive. I will provide sodas and some food but please BYOB. There will be a Yankee Swap, like at Kittynh's last year, and Kittynh will be bringing a Slyviata that we will demolish.
A full plan is TBD, so I started this thread to determine the full plan. So you'd better start determining! So far, we will have:
Live Entertainment! If and only if Kittynh brings Dingo the World's Cutest Dog or Supercorgi brings Louie the Supercorgi. Kittynh's Theodate the Wonder Cat will continue to be invisible and undetectable. In case no pets attend, I will demonstrate my Magic Finger Chopper on unwilling 'volunteers'.
Intelligent Conversation! Your brain will be nourished by the high-quality discussion permeating the house. To misquote Vizzini, "Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates? They'd beg to be able to attend this event!".
Potluck! Please bring a potluck dish to share.
Contrary to discussions elsewhere, we will not be experimenting to see what effect using bats, axes, guns, and implements of destruction to demolish a pinata indoors will have on the interior of my house.
My house is conveniently located near Lowell, Mass., near routes 3 and 495, and the MBTA Commuter Rail. Pets and children are welcome.
"Guests are reminded that platform one forbids the use of weapons, teleportation and religion."
* Sir Isaac Newton was born on 25 December. Some people claim some other figure shares Newton's birthday. We're celebrating the birthday of the more important of the two -- Newton! ;)

12th October 2006, 07:00 PM
Yeah!!!
I will be starting construction of the Sylvia Pinata soon!
It's up to the brilliant minds here to figure out how she will be demolished!
Bring a skeptic themed gift, which includes funny woo stuff is you wish.
Scott, thanks for holding this event. Not to be missed as even Atheists and Agnostics (and the lone Xian) need a winter event all their own.

I've never celebrated Newtonmas before, I think it's time I did; and I'll bring the Steve. But only if Kitty promises to bring along Pool Boy so he'll have someone to relate to. They can hang out in the corner w/ the laptop and talk about race cars and the Navy or whatever.
If no dogs are able to make it, I could bring along Moranda (aka Morandypants) the fat chihuahua. She LOVES EVERYBODY... please rub her tummy, she's like an enthusiastic little Buddha...

ohhh, Dingo likes little dogs. And he's a sucker for female dogs...he LOVES the ladies (only he really can't, but he's clueless)

Arrggghhh! Why do you people always schedule things opposite other activities I have!? I don't have a very active life, but you guys have a definate knack for conflicting with my limited social life. :( Oh well, I'll see what I can do. Maybe I'll blow off the other event. Supercorgi would like to come (he'll demolish the pinata if no one else wants to - just think, Sylvia torn apart by wild dogs! What better way to do her in? :D )

Do you mind if other groups "borrow" your Newtonmas idea?Elaine,
It's not my idea. I got the idea of Newtonmas from the atheist community. The only part that I added was the idea of having it at my house. You can't have your party at SkepticScott's house, but everything else is fair game! ;)

* Sir Isaac Newton was born on 25 December.
False.*
Some people claim some other figure shares Newton's birthday.
If that figure is supposed to be Jesus, it is also very likely to be false. And those who do claim Jesus was born on December 25 didn't study their Bible properly...
*For one thing, those silly Brits didn't adjust their calendars along with the rest of civilization.

my mom was born on Dec.25, and as a child she was very upset about it.
At least she didn't suffer the fate of most girls born on that date and end up with the name "Noel" or "Holly". A lot of woman named "Holly" were born on that day.

Hey, as long as there's some excuse to have a celebration on December 25th, who cares who was really born on that day or not?

NEWS FLASH!!!
Ed the Goatherd, is sending presents for NEWTONMAS!!!
Yeah!!
We have all been good little skeptics (even the Xians) and Ed the Goatherd has PMd me that he is sending on special gifts for his chosen skepdudes and skepchicks.
I'm serious! Goodies are coming my way, and after I pick through and take out what I want, the leftovers are for other attendees. Oh alright, it's not nice to fool Ed the Goatherd, so I will be a very good skepchick and dole out the gifts!!!
Ed the Goatherd posts on this forum under another name (sounds like Badgerrrr) so I'll just leave you to guess his secret identity!!!

It's a funny thing, ramen noodles are currently the only cheap-o student food I don't have in the house right now. I suppose I've gotten a bit snobbish: after having had the real stuff from the Chinese supermarket in the city, the stuff they sell at the local supermarket just doesn't taste the same. And I haven't had time to go into the city for a while.

The problem with scavenging the free food, as I've found, is that you never know how much is going to be left, so you can't count on that to provide you with lunch.
Also, you have to wait until the people having the lunch meeting are all gone before you can swoop in and take whatever they didn't touch. It sucks if something comes up that requires your attention, and all the food has been scavenged by colleagues by the time you're done.

Also Left Behind were:
* A Yankee swap present (magic tricks, ESP cards, "Dreams for Dummies").
* A bag of assorted noodle packets (Kitten? Were these supposed to be your dinners for the next week?)
* A "H&M" bag with a jacket and assorted women's clothes. Come on people, mind your manners! Don't you know that if any of that is going on, you should invite the host? ;)

Scott has a lovely place, and a really COOL tv!
He was so sweet to put up with 2 dogs!
Plus we got to show off the new mini-cooper!
We didn't need an address to find Scotts place. His neighbors have all gone WAY overboard for Xmas! He was the only one without a nativity scene AND a Santa AND a giant blow up snowman in his yard.

After the Yankee swap, we made toast. Who would have predicted that a miracle would occur?* Yes, an image appeared on the toast. See for yourself! I think it's at least as impressive as the Grilled Cheese Sandwich!

That's my toast dammit! I'll get you for that, Kitty. The joke's on you, though; the bubble bath is going to the Salvation Army for a tax refund. :)
Thanks for the party, Scott! Would have written sooner, but it was midnight before we got home.
Hey, Boo? Scott(?) has something for you and BabyBoo.
OK, gang, next up is the Beady Beltain Party, as soon as I figure out when Beltain is. Sometime near my birthday.

The clothes are mine, but Rebecca was wearing them... you can give them to Mom or myself next time you see us.
The Newtonmas party was a rousing success! Thank you, everyone who attended. I "inherited" six decks of cards (Rebecca's, have to be returned), a book on cod (also hers, gotta return that too), a pot (YoPopa's, got to return that too), two potholders (who's? They shall be returned!), and more leftovers than I can eat in a week.
Don't you know that if any of that is going on, you should invite the host? ;)
I'm going to check the flatware to make sure no spoons bent during the party. ;)

I remember forgetting stuff because of pot but now I forgot my pot and I haven't had any pot in years. Does it ever get any easier? And I was going to make New England boiled dinner this week. Lucky that I over ate at your party Scott cause raw cabbage & cold corned beef don't sound so good.
Anywhoo Boo, I got my virtual hug although I had to beg for it. Thanks, it actually felt like a real hug!

Harumph! I didn't get to see it or even realize you brought it along (or is that, "it brought you along"?) until I left. Saw it in the driveway and had to spend a while checking it out. (Hopefully I was able to wipe all the drool off the bonnet and boot.)

Hey YoPapa, that bisque you made rocked! Care to share the recipe?OK, but please keep this a secret :forbidden :talk010: . Everyone was so impressed. I want them to continue thinking I have some kind of talent :homersimp.
I just mixed 4 brands of store bought lobster bisque, added Half & Half as well as shrimp and lobster meat. For a smaller quantity I would stick with either Pepperidge Farm brand canned bisque or Rockport brand frozen bisque. If you're feeling suicidal you can add heavy cream or if you're a heath fanatic add skim milk. I thought that Half & Half would be a good compromise for this group. If Paul is coming to your party be sure to have Tabasco sauce as a option.

People always ask for the recipe and I'm like, "yeah, I'll get back to you."I thought about dodging Supercorgis' question but I couldn't resist the skeptic lesson in this. Even taste buds can be fooled.
I knew that if people saw me opening cans that they would expect less and their experience would be diminished. Therefore I opened the cans at home and mixed them with the Half & Half into tupperware. Adding the good stuff last not only prevents it from being over-cooked but helps maintain the "from scratch" perception.

The worst part of the party is finding all the items that people forgot. The best part of the party is returning them! I visited YoPopa and Mrs. YoPopa (YoMoma?) last week to return his items. They offered me a home-cooked dinner, which I gladly accepted. I knew how good his seafood bisque was.
I mailed Kitten's items to her, and next up is returning Rebecca's and Mumchup's items at LostAngeles's get-together.
Skeptic parties are so much fun.

Mrs. YoPopa (YoMoma?) Those are as good guesses as any. If I find one she answers to I'll get back to you.
BTW..I highly recommend "forgetting" stuff at Scott's house. It comes back clean as new and he delivers.
