I have windowsME. I purchased a cd puzzle and when I try to open it I receive this advice---"your current display mode does not allow to run the game. To avoid this error try to switch your desktop to 16 bit color depth".
But it is already set to that.
Any clues?

You have Windows ME.. Isn't that clue enough in and off itself?

So they say, but I've never had any trouble with mine. I have always been able to download and use it without problems.

How old is the program you are trying to run?
If it is old, you might try reducing your color depth settings so they are no "deeper" than the program is asking for. It might have been written in such a way that if your screen settings aren't EXACTLY what it wants, it assumes that you are at LOWER settings than it needs, since your current settings did not exist when the program was written.
Just a thought.

Leave the colour setting at 16 bit colour, but lower the resolution. My guess is that when the game tries to initialize the video overlay and receives an error, it throws the same error dialog no matter what the actual cause is. Try running it at 800x600x16 or even 640x480x16.

Try to set the compatibility mode for the program? Can't remember if they have that in ME. Better still, install XP.

None of the suggestions have fixed the problem. Thanks anyway.
I know I need to update.

Or you could downgrade to 98SE. It still works great for me. Then again I got it from Alienware back when 64MB graphics cards just came out.

This is the most shocking thing I have heard this month.
And that's considering that a wacko with a funky haircut just detonated a nuclear weapon not too far from here.
