You've heard of WalMart. Now there's GhostMart...

Check out their Ghost Meter! "With this unit you can locate those areas with elevated EMF levels simply and easily which leads to a more thorough investigation."

(And as everybody knows, taking measurements with instruments that have no ability to detect ghosts is what thorough investigation is all about!)

Or how 'bout their Mannix Temperature/ Humidity Pen" "In the last few years leading researchers have identified a possible connection between anomalous temperature fluctuations and humidity fluctuations. "

("Leading researchers"! Who cares that humidity has nothing to do with the existence of ghosts. It sounds so official and scientific!)

And their Ghost Hunting Vest! "This black super comfortable mesh vest seems like it was designed specifically for paranormal research."

(It's black! It's mesh! It'll impress poltergeists!)

Or even their 'Driveway Patrol' Motion Sensor Alarm! "Place the Driveway Patrol across any area of a location and you are sure to find where the spirits are. When something crosses its path, an infrared sensor will alert you with a pleasant chime that someone or something has broken the beam."

(Yes indeed, a pleasant chime is what I want when spirits of the undead come calling!)

My favorite - the special woooooo notebook. The 'Ghost Hunters Do It In the Dark Journal'. Note the description(bolding mine) :

This is a wonderful journal for anything from investigations logs to addresses. Ghost-Mart's Wire-O bound, 160 page journal is unlined and measures 5" x 8", a handy on-the-go size to fit in your investigation kit pack.
Back cover made of thin black flexible textured plastic, measures 16/1000"
thick
Front cover made of 12pt glossy paper, coated for scratch resistance
Filled with 60lb book-weight (24 lb bond) blank paper - NO LINES

It's a ten dollar blank-page notebook! About 6 times what you'd pay for the same thing in Office Depot! But you get that natty scratch-resistant cover!

I think these are bottom feeders of the paranormal movement. They're just in it for the money. There are as many trinkets and halloween decorations as there are "serious" research tools.

Ghost-mart is the business end of West Virginia Ghost Hunters, LLC. I did a feature on the site last week. It can be found, along with the hate mail I received from the founder at: Host A Para-Research Party! (http://www.mondoskepto.com/node/26)

I love that article! These people have applied the Mary Kay and Tupperware paradigm to paranormal woo. Maybe Cingular can get in on the act with some sort of EVP Free Minutes Plan, i.e. "Cingular. We're raising the bar -- and the dead!" :D

Heck, maybe that's the hope for busting 'em all! If we can't get people to stop believing that a double exposure is Uncle Ned? Then, get Bernsward and Woodstein to infiltrate a party and expose 'em on RICO violations for establishing a pyramid scheme! :spjimlad:

Erm...

"In the last few years leading researchers have identified a possible connection between anomalous temperature fluctuations and humidity fluctuations. "

Setting aside the relevance of this to the existence and detection of "ghosts", what do they mean "last few years"?! Temperature and humidity are inextricably linked and always have been.

Yeesh.

I often wonder if the more outrageous commercial woo websites are actually ran by intelligent skeptics out to make a quick buck at the expense of idiots-who-would-have-blown-the-money-anyway.

Currently I am having a hard time coming up with a reason why I wouldnt start a website hocking spiritual, psychic, religious nonsense. The only thing I can come up with is it's immoral, but to whom? These people earnestly believe in fantasy - is it so wrong to simply take their money, when it would have been spent in another equally deluded fashion had my website not been around?

Morality be damned, i'd rather be rich than self righteous. Who else wants in? I'm thinking we could sell authentic diving rod calibrators with extremely complicated instruction manuals.
