I apologise if this is addressed elsewhere. But as far as my knowledge goes, CVR data (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockpit_voice_recorder) of the hijacked planes hasn't been released. Why?

The WTC recorders weren't recovered; the Pentagon's voice recorder was damaged; Flight 93's was played to relatives, although there's a transcript at http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0412061hijack1.html

Wow. Where did they get that? And is there any way you can point me to evidence of the others not being recovered?
ETA: I read the prologue... and am happily today's dunce.
Also, thanks.

The CVR recording from flight 93 was played at the Moussaoui Trial. The transcript was released by the courts, as the relatives refused to have the actual recording released (can you blame them). The transcript is originally from the trial exhibits...a lot of very interesting things are there.

I agree. But for the other 3 planes, no CVR data was recovered at all?
(I'm sorry for posting this thread, but it happened to become of acute interest, and I muchly appreciate all linkage I've received)

I think the CVR from one other flight was recovered, but the data was not recoverable (IIRC).

I'm sure something was recoverable, but the recorders were too badly damaged to recover the data through normal means. There are ATC transcripts available for all 4 flights though.
The hijackers actually made a few transmissions to ATC.. "...We have some planes..." was one. I think Jarrah accidentally made a transmission to ATC when he was trying to make a PA address.

Thanks guys. Yes, apathoid, they made, as far as the ATC goes, numerous such errors. I seem to have to lean towards the fact that yet another CT-inclined individual asked something impossible of me and available facts.
And I had cookies to send!

It's actually illegal for a recording from a CVR to be publicly released.

Unless all parties involved (relatives, airline, NTSB etc) agree to it, I guess?

It is illegal for the National Transportation Safety Board, who regulates these recordings, to release them to the public. The recordings presented here were obtained from other legitimate sources. The airlines, who own the original recording, are legally allowed to release it if they so choose. Several others come from lawsuit settlements in which release was mandated by a court order, and yet others come from various independent investigators who chose to release the information.

AS has covered it. :) The basic fact is the FDR and CVR are the private property of the airlines. You can't publicly release private property unless you own that private property.

Cheers both! Just like the '80 video recordings' of AA77 crashing into the Pentagon. They are owned by the companies that owned the camera's. It was still a surpise to me that Judical Watch got the Citgo tape released through a FOIA. [/derail]
