View Full Version : Christianity: Which sect is most deluded

Tricky

I probably wouldn't use the word "deluded", but since this is a parallel thread to this one (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?p=2037657#post2037657), I thought I'd better use the same terminology. I'd venture to say that most people on this board are more familiar with Christianity than any other religions, so staying more within our sphere of knowledge, which of the groups above is your least favorite, whether it be because they are the most deluded, bizarre, annoying or whatever. Explain.

Is the title a trick question? It is like asking which homeopathic remedy is most diluted. I mean, you can go by the numbers, but once you’re already to nothing but water in the vial, can you really dilute it any more? :D

Explain? That's too much like work.

I do like the whole start-a-religion-so-you-can-bang-every-hot-young-chick-in-the-cult philosophy. So I gave the nod to Joseph Smith and Mormonism. But I suppose it's mostly just because they are so visible in my area. And they almost completely run the city government.

It's the Church of God/Pentacostal listing. Seventh down.

A relative of mine joined the Unification Church, ie "the Moonies'.

The founder, Sun Myung Moon, states he is the Messiah, and a brother to Jesus Christ. He owns the Washington Post newspaper, among others, and uses it for propaganda purposes.

His daughter in law wrote a book about her life in the Moonie inner circle. She said his son beat her and several of his family used cocaine pretty regularly. And that they mocked the followers for believing in the bulls*** theology, but seriously liked the donations they receive. Most of his children have gone to Harvard, Yale, have several houses around the world, stables of horses etc. while the followers work long hours for no pay.

Damn, that is rough, DD. Glad you pulled through.

But it seems that unless they were living in a cave, your parents had the opportunity to know better, but chose not to.

Voted for Christian Science, for the obvious reasons.

It would be Mormon, but it is insulting to all Christians to even associate the them with Christians :D .

My parents got smarter, but they just didn't have any idea about illness and thought I had a really bad cough, they were raised in the wierd insular world of christ science, which they have both rejected since then. It was part of my group therapy to forgive if not forget.

I did have my tonsils removed the year before, so they did see some value in doctors, just not the value of taking a kid to the doctor when they have a cough for three weeks.(1968)

Possibly... all of the above, as previously noted by TV's Frank

I voted Mormon. Anyone who thinks they are going to someday become a god and spiritually copulate to have spirit children is way past gone. And YES they do believe this. The men get lots of wives to spiritually copulate with.

Actually, that sounds kinda hot. Maybe I'll reconsider.

Jehova Witnesses.

But I am probably displaying heavy bias. Their leaflets scared me when I was 7 or 8 years old with threats of doom and hellfire. I've always been a compulsive reader and my grandmother -herself a RCC- used to leave them tossed somewhere so I would sooner or later read them. Her reasoning was that they had parts of the Bible, so reading them was good for me. It wasn't, since they left me with the impression I was doomed to HELLFIRE.

And yesterday, here in Brazil, local authorities had to force parents to accept a blood transfusion to save their child's life. What sort of religion or cult is that where fathers deny their children a chance to live?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, all Christain sects enjoy the Job tale, so potentially... But those folks IMHO cross the line. OK, many others also do. I'll stop here to avoid any similarities with SteveGrenard's anti-Muslim "campaign".

Obviously, the most deluded sect is the Reformed First United Brotherhood of Bible Baptists, who believe in the heresy of a left-handed Jesus.

The most correct sect is of course the Orthodox First United Brotherhood of Bible Baptists who will soon silence the lies of the RFUTripleB. Jesus was a righty!!!!!!

Calvinism isn't really a denomination as such; there are various denominations that could be described as Calvinist. I believe most Presbyterian congregations are Calvinist, for example, and Presbyterianism is one of the poll options.

I don't get that Quakers and Shakers are mixed in with Amish/Menonite. In any case, I'll go with Shakers, since they don't procreate (or have sex at all). That's nuts.

Nice furniture though.

:) No. Mormons don't have a set number and there is nothing about the wives being virgins.

Or even being attractive. It seems like you just get handed a gaggle of unwed women, plus any you acquired in life.

Come to think of it, I need to get cracking. I only have 1 ex-wife lined up for the afterlife.

I'm both surprised and unsurprised by the results so far. I thought that I was one of the few who find Christian Scientists so offensive, but as it turns out, the "allowing a child to die" angle is a pretty good way to get people riled up. Also surprising is that nobody so far has picked Catholicism. I know so many people who are recovering from the guilt that RC laid on them that I thought there were bound to be a few here. Also surprising was that Mormonism was rated so high. Yeah, they're way out there, but I've always considered them harmless kooks, unlike in-your-face folks like Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists.

Not surprising is that the "boring sects" like Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian etc. didn't get any votes. Also unsurprising is that Baptists got a fairly large tally. They seem to always be in the forefront when it comes to banning books or teaching religion in public schools.

I was gratified to see that Cult of the Virgin, which is only questionably Christian, got one vote. I wasn't sure to put it in at all. It was between that and Satanism, which is of course based on Christianity.

That would be Church of God/Pentecostals, they also go by Word of Faith.

I'm surprised to see so few votes for Unification (which is only marginally Christian) because they certainly are deluded on the present tense. At least Joseph Smith, Aimee Simple McPhereson and Ellen White are dead so the Moonies win out over the Mormons, Christian Scientists and SDAs.

I voted Baptists because they are so into everyone's business in this part of the country. But I could have gone Christian scientist or Pentecostal easily.

But where are the new nondenominational mega-churches like Lakewood on this poll? I view them as the latest, greatest danger.
