Apparently one of the many great "improvements" MS made to Windows over the years was eliminating this ability.

Anyone know of a way or program that will allow this?

Do you mean viewing Web Pages? You can change that in the Browser Options.

Or things like the window borders and font colors? Those options are on Desktop Properties.

I mean like an "appearance scheme" (eg the Windows default is blue title bar etc). You can choose pre-packaged stuff and change it, but you can't save your own customized color scheme anymore.

In Windows XP the ability to save the settings is now under the 'Theme' tab in desktop properties. The change the settings you click on the 'Appearance" tab and click on the 'Advanced' button. Leave it to MS to take what used to be done on one tab and spread it out to three.

After changing all your settings in start>settings>control panel>display (or by right clicking on a blank space on the desktop and clicking settings) click apply and then go to the theme tab and click "Save As" to save your theme as a file that you can distribute or reset later.

Thx.

FYI this apparently works only with the "Classic" settings, not the XP ones (ie with the big bloated title bars etc). More great improvements by MS.

You used to be able to bundle themes and provide them for other people to share. I'm not sure if you can do that on XP.

I have several different themes I put together. It's pretty cool to have sound effects from Tron or Star Trek for each function. Of course, I only set those on at home...

Themes are the bane of tech support personel the world over.

"Okay, now click the button that isn't greyed out on the left side." "There are no buttons like that." "Hmmm? Okay, what DO you see?" "Well there's a white one, a snow one, a seashell one, a mint cream one, an ivory one, a ......" :faint:

Amen, brother, amen. After banning the use of themes a user called me up describing a problem I just couldn't picture over the phone, something about their text input box was missing letters and showing gibberish, so I remote in and they had changed their fonts to something huge so the ends of their inputs were simply off the edge of the input box where you couldn't see them and the tops and bottoms were cut off. They had modified the Windows default scheme and saved it so it wasn't a simple matter of going back to default. They told me, "you said we couldn't use themes, not modify the default one." A little knowledge in the hands of the users is always dangerous.

lol

Course allowing people to modify "Default" isn't brilliant on MS's part either.
