View Full Version : Anyone up for a meet in Seattle Nov 12-16?

I will be in downtown Seattle, WA the afternoon of Sunday, Nov 12th through Friday, the 17th for a geek technical conference. Any forum members up for a meet/great/eat? Drinking is certainly acceptable. Man cannot live by bread alone. Frequently there must be beverage. (Woody Allen)
In addition to the usual social stuff, I would also enjoy finding running buddies for a few days. Anyone fancy a run? Warning - I'm slow. 11:00 miles. My actual preferred training routine is 7.5 minute run, 1 minute walk for up to 14 miles. But any shorter distance is welcome (VERY welcome :D). I will not be bringing my bike, but if you have an extra 54-56cm bike, that works as well. I am willing to rent a bike if you really want to go. Again - I am not the fastest thing on 2 wheels.

I'm in Bellevue. I'd consider a group get together but it would depend on timing. I'm in the middle of a 'giving 3,000 doses of flu vaccine' marathon. The vaccine arrived late so my 2 months worth of appointments are now squeezed into 1 month sans a 4 day week end.

What are you? The flu fairy? My Mr. Skinny!
Bring the family and friends - the more the merrier. Post or PM when we get closer to the dates and you know whether or not you have completed your "shooting spree."

Due to the late arrival of said vaccine, my "shooting spree" continues through the second week of Dec. I have a couple weekend days in there somewhere and the 4 day T-day weekend off.
Don't get the Mr Skinny comment??????

Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans. I have to be at a funeral in Dallas on Monday, 11/13. I will head to Seattle Monday "sometime after that." *sigh* I will post again when I know more details.
Who'd have thunk they wouldn't bury veterans on Veteran's Day?
I know there are more Washingtonians out there. I'll start paying more attention to the location field on the posts and start PMing. I will also cross-post to Community.

Keep me updated. I may be able to meet you for food or drink in the evening. As a newbie this year, I'd love to meet some TAMers and get inside info on what to expect. And to see familiar faces when I get there.
I've gotten my flu shot, by the way, so skeptigirl can keep the syringe in her holster if we get together.

http://seattleskeptics.org/I didn't know there was a Seattle Skeptics group. I'll have to see if I can make that date or at least meet them. Thanks.

It seems like Beyerstein might be interesting. Maybe interesting enough to get me to go into this Rock Salt Steaks & Seafood place. Thanks for letting us know.

I've gotten my flu shot, by the way, so skeptigirl can keep the syringe in her holster if we get together. But I notice on your blog you claim the vaccine made you feel punky that evening. Placebo controlled studies offer evidence the feeling may have just been coincidental.
I give a thousand or so flu shots a year (3,000 this year) and only have one or two people who claim they consistently feel mildly uncomfortable the day after the shot.
And this year, there is a weird virus making the rounds in our area. The symptoms are headache, dizzyness, and mild GI distress. For me it lasted one day. For my son, one of his friends and a few other people we know it was off and on for a couple days. I have been vaccinating school staff with the help of the school nurses in one school district here and they reported it has made the rounds in their schools. The same symptom pattern is being reported. It is quite an odd but fortunately mild set of symptoms. It is not vaccine related.
Anyway, just thought you'd be interested in the data. :D

All right, skeptigirl, it might have been coincidence. If you looked at my blog, you'll know that I was zombie very recently, and it may have been zombie after-effects. In fact, I was in a crowd of zombies--could have picked up something nasty from the undead.

I can very seldom plan anything in advance. I have three kids who usually need chauffering... and dear hubby is presently very over worked (he will be logging in to work this afternoon).
I would dearly love to go to the Skeptics' dinner on Friday, but Wednesday is too early to RSVP!
I take that back... I did RSVP and pay to go to a seminar on how to transition special needs children out of high school to real life that is being presented at Seattle University's Law School. Kind of thought it was important.
Edit to add: Oh, yeah, I am very familiar with that virus! Daughter had a strange symptom --- for a while everything she saw had a yellow cast, something like an aura to a migraine!

I have my final itinerary. I will be getting in too late on Monday to do anything then. That leaves Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening. I'm glad you all can get together for the skeptic dinner on Friday, but I will be winging my way home that evening. :(
If anyone wishes to get together Tues, Wed, or Thurs evening or wishes to go running in the morning, post and I will reply via PM with my hotel and phone.

I'm afraid we've ended up with a fully booked week, so we're not going to be able to partake in any socializing. But dang can tell (or make up) some stories about us.

Well, one thing CriticalThinking is going to get out of this is that in what is supposed to be a fairly laid back area of the country... there are lots of busy folks! I will be very glad when soccer season is over (and only one kid is doing a post-season tournament, woo hoo!!).
There is easy quick bus service to near Bellevue Square for CT if that works for folks who don't have to chauffeur kids around... and better parking for those who drive. Just sayin'.

I will be in downtown Seattle, WA the afternoon of Sunday, Nov 12th through Friday, the 17th for a geek technical conference. Are you attending PASS per chance? (I'm an Analysis Services geek practitioner -- not attending this year however.)

The wettest November in recorded history and it's only the 15th and no end in sight? Maybe it's time to ask the fateful question: What's a cubit?

Is the symptom gone now? It sounds a bit more worrisome than dizzyness. Except I wouldn't worry if it's gone now.

Do any of you know who will be at the Friday dinner/talk? Is it a big group or a small one. But I guess if I was supposed to RSVP by last night I missed that one too.
Tonight is out for me, days are out this week.
We had such great weather last month, CT, really we did. This stuff is a wet mess even for here.

That's very odd. Is the symptom gone now? It sounds a bit more worrisome than dizzyness. Except I wouldn't worry if it's gone now.
It went away when she got ibuprofen... In hubby's family visual auras are not uncommon. Before a migraine my son's vision puts everything in a purple cast... my hubby gets the jaggies (I do not get migraines, I do know lots about them... especially how to treat those who suffer from them! This came into play when I was watching my daughter's best friend. She came down with classic migraine symptoms, including an aura, so I gave some ibuprofen, put her in a dark room and let her rest in quiet... I had to explain it to her mom who had never dealt with migraines).
I did get worried, especially for the sudden onset of symptoms the evening before (from perfectly cheerful and happy, to absolutely miserable and incredibly cold and shivering in less than 90 minutes)... So I did take her to our family doc. She had a virus (and felt much better with ibuprofen). All is well now.

Many thanks to Dang for driving through the monsoon and meeting for dinner. He's a nice guy.
I also want to thank the other Seattlites (Seattleans? Seattlonians?) who responded both in this thread and in PMs. I do understand being booked with other things in life. The only reason I had the time this week is because I am shirking my normal duties and travelling on business.
I hope to meet the rest of you some day. Next year's conference is in Denver, so you Denverites better start polishing up your excuses.

Monsoon is right. It was one of the most windy and wet days we've had in a long time. As for CT, he must come to TAM because he says he's got honorary "skepchick" status to get into the TAM skepchick party. He can smuggle some chocolate out for the guys.

Didn't make the skeptic's dinner Friday either. Oh well.
Hope to meet you at TAM, dang and CT, if you go.
Just wondering if CT left before the crane toppled? That was something.
