View Full Version : The Greatest Lie

Yesterday I drove past a small church in the Dudley area of the West Midlands.
A big poster, at the front of the church, it pronounced :
The Greatest Lie Ever Told!
Is this church finally going to tell the truth about god then?
What else could it possibly be referring to? After all, evolution is a proven theory...
Sorry, didn't have time to stop and attend the church service, I could have told you more if I had.
(On a side note, I am a fairly good typist, but every time I typed the word "church" above, it came out "chruch" , which is very like crutch - Freudian slip perhaps, or "THE TRUTH" coming out?!)

I'm guessing it is that Satan doesn't exist.

Psst, God is watching you, but he will tell Santa is you have been naughty or nice.

I'm hoping the lie will be a sermon about how Bush isn't jesus christ reborn after all. I mean sure, it would be lovely to believe they were going to announce xianity was a fake, but that wouldn't help anyways, 'true believers' would just claim the devil possesed the pastor or something.

That any multicultural see-no-evil worldview is rational? :)

The Greatest Lie Ever Told out front of a church. Clearly, these people are no good with irony at all. I mean, come on. You'd think that you'd notice something like that.

I suspect THE GREATEST LIE EVER TOLD is that good people go to heaven. Only believers go to heaven. Even evil believers go to heaven.
I know this because of my fundy upbringing. These folks repeat themselves a lot.

Here's a little tract set in the "wild west" with just such a moral.
The bad guy goes to Heaven and the good guy goes to Hell.

David Alan Coe wrote a song about the 3 biggest lies in the world. I can't repeat them here.

From a Fundie point of view, I strongly suspect that the greatest lie ever told would be: that you can get to heaven without accepting Jesus as your personal savior and asking him to forgive your sins.

Sounds like an ad for a book I just read recently "The Jesus Papers"

I'm guessing it is that Satan doesn't exist.
I heard that phrased a little differently, as in, "Satan's greates accomplishment has been convincing people that he doesn't exist."

cue music! :D Yep, but the concpet predates the movie. My mom was found of telling us (her children) this. It's very effective rhetoric.

Awww, come on, you can repeat the first one. Of course, it won't make a whole lot of sense without the other two, and you're definitely right about those...

The cheque is in the mail? That's definitely one.
One of the others is, "of course I'll wear a condom."
Doubt that either of those will come up in church - although the cheque one might, god loves money.

"I love you Joe, no sh__" is right up there with "for you, a special price for this good deal" and "this will only hurt for a little while."
