View Full Version : Roll Call: Lotus of Siam: "The best Thai restaurant in North America"
CFLarsen
31st October 2006, 01:30 PM
One of the perhaps lesser-known perks of going to TAM is the opportunity to visit Lotus of Siam (http://www.saipinchutima.com/). It has been hailed by the experts - so go ahead and cry "APPEAL TO AUTHORITY" all you want - as:
...the best Thai restaurant in North America
Jonathan Gold, Gourmet Magazine
Glowing review, Frommers (http://www.frommers.com/destinations/lasvegas/D51887.html)
The most compelling reason to visit Las Vegas is to eat as often as possible at Lotus of Siam, an unprepossessing-looking Thai restaurant in a strip mall, one mile away from the glitter of the Strip. If only Penn and Teller were capable of conjuring up magic as captivating and improbable as chef Saipin Chutima's cuisine.
OffBeat Travel (http://www.offbeattravel.com/siam.html)
It is situated in an off-Strip boring mall an ultra-short drive (we're in America, nobody walks) from the Riviera, it looks like nothing, but....man....the food....
THE FOOD!
I've been to Lotus of Siam each year since TAM moved to Las Vegas, a full five (six? I can't even remember!) times, and each time, it has been fan-bloody-f**king-tastic.
The food is as authentic as you can possibly get. The chef drives to L.A. twice a week, to get the vegetables needed. Now, that's dedication.
The best part - for those of you who are pressed for money - is that it is dirt cheap. I kid you not: You can get an appetizer, a main course and drinks, for $20. Including tips. At TAM4, we paid around $17 each. So, $20 is excess.
Now....
We can go to eat a fantastic meal, ordering separately. But we can also do this:
Throw in a measly $20, and you'll get to sample from a range of appetizers and a range of main courses. We will let the chef decide what to serve us, and we will nibble from each dish. Sample what the authenticathistic..allywhateverthetermis Northern Thai cuisine can muster. It won't be a meal, it will be an adventure. An adventure into scent, taste, life. All in the company of fellow skeptics. That's a winner.
No, you won't get to gorge on whatever is your fancy. You will get a range of dishes to pick from. You will not gormandize on one dish, but you will not go away hungry either. And you will go away, full on taste. That's what life's really about, isn't it?
Desserts? Asian cuisines aren't all too focused on desserts as we know it. If you want a dessert, you're on your own. Whether you have room for one is highly doubtful, though.
Drinks? Individual - and not all are fond of Ye Evil Spirits - so let's keep that out of the calculation as well. Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead with an American beer (yes, f**king close to water), so - let's be individuals about drinks, if only to make it simple.
The catch is: I need people to sign up beforehand. The place is - understandably - very popular, and we need to book in advance. I will keep a few seats open, for hijacked TAM attendees, but...don't count on it being available. I need your pledge now. That is, January 2nd at the latest (allowing you to overcome your New Year Hangover).
People: I've been married to an Asian, and I have eaten at the best - and worst - Asian restaurants both in NY, Copenhagen, London and Hong Kong. But I have never - and I repeat: never - gotten better Thai food than at Lotus of Siam.
I simply cannot recommend this restaurant enough. If you attend TAM, and you don't go to Lotus of Siam, you are missing out on an incredibly epicurian experience of a lifetime.
Oh, man...the food...the scents...the tastes...
What sayeth ye? Thursday or Friday night?

No, you won't. It will all be done by Wednesday 17:00. By Wednesday 17:00, we will all kick back and relax, so we can ooze in on Thursday morning...whenever we feel like getting up...and get it ON at noon.
There will be no last-minute panicky action. There's no need for it, there's no reason why it should be so, and it will not happen.

I've assigned two hours, but I seriously doubt it will take that long, especially because we won't spend a lot of time ordering food. Their menu is very long, and it takes a long time for 12-15 people to find what they want and order.
When we lay down $20 each and let the chef decide, we skip all that.

I realize this, but the idea I presented in the OP was to get a group of people together and sample the best Thai food, for a set amount of money.
As you and others know, the food there is that good. I was aiming to get even more people to experience as much of it as possible.
If people have dietary constraints, then this form of (dare I say "communal"? :D) eating is not the way for them. If there are some who want to order separately, they can of course do that. In that case, I strongly suggest that they check out the menu in advance, so they know exactly what they want to eat. Print it out, circle it and give it to the waiter when they arrive. Or even better, PM it to me, so I can tell LoS.
I need to know in advance how many will eat this way, because I have to tell LoS how many will be eating (oh, well) "community" style. This way, we won't have to wait for the food, but can sit down and eat right away (which is also one of the reasons why I want to order in advance: There are so many things to do at TAM, and time is all-too-limited. Waiting for food is something we can avoid in this case, so I say we do it).
I'll assume that those I don't hear from, will eat the way I proposed in the OP.
Claus, please add me for Friday night too. I want to go twice, so Wednesday and Friday for me.

Like I said, we have been 18 around the big table, but...it was rather cramped. I'd rather have people enjoying dinner than having to eat on top of each other. When does the show begin? At 21:00?
We'll start at 18:30, and since the food is already ordered (for most of us!), we can start eating right away. Will that take two hours? I don't think so, so if the show starts at nine, there should be plenty of time.

ATTENTION!
If you have special dietary needs, I need to know before this Saturday 18:00 GMT. I will also need to know what you plan to eat.
I won't reveal the menu, but I can say now that there will be no tofu, and no fish (except one dish which has a bit of shrimp in it). Two dishes will have peanuts in them.
Check the menu at Lotus of Siam here (http://www.saipinchutima.com/index.html). PM me with what you want, and I'll inform the restaurant in advance.
That way, we can all start eating at the same time when we arrive, and not have to wait for each other. We want a smooth, efficient dinner, with as little as the usual confusion-bordering-on-panic as possible. It takes time, and, as those of you who have been to TAM before, time is scarce. We don't want to spend it on ordering, who-ordered-that, I-didn't-order-that, paying, can-anyone-change and all that.
Just to be safe, I will PM each and every one of those who have a firm spot. Unless I hear back from you, I'll put you down for the communal menu.
It's true! :)
Wait a minute...shrimp isn't a fish...

Why won't you reveal the 'communal menu'? I'd rather keep it simple and go with that, unless for some reason it just doesn't suit me. Though no tofu and no fish sounds like it leaves mainly things I'd be likely to order anyway. :)

Though no tofu and no fish sounds like it leaves mainly things I'd be likely to order anyway. :)
That's why I pointed it out. :)
I believe that shrimp is considered a shellfish for the purposes of allergies, etc.

My only reaction to "no fish" is "Awwwwww . . ." -- but then again, I had tilapia with sweet chili sauce for lunch yesterday. The company cafeteria has a Thai chef whom the executive chef hired away from a member of the Board of Directors.
Are we going to try to meet somewhere in the Riv to travel over to Lotus Wednesday evening?

I assume we are using the "Northern Menu", because it looks like there is tofu and fish on the "One Page Menu". Is that right?

Incidentally, since there is now a waiting list, I may voluntarily give up one of my spots, either Wednesday or Friday (preferably Friday), to let someone else in. :)

On second thought, I probably couldn't argue anything right now. I'm currently surrounded by Germans who are speaking German. And I don't speak German. And I am in London. And I'd never left the states previous to coming here. My brain is currently overloaded and incapable of a cohesive argument.

I think the communal thing is fine with me, as long as there is some spice...
I was going to order off the menu for two reasons:
1) I don't like sea food (and that includes shrimp)
2) I want something spicier than ketchup
So it looks like concern #1 is taken care of. What about #2? My experience is that most people can't tolerate even the most mildly spicy food. Now I'm not talking about wanting some macho, sweating bullets type food, but I do like enough spice to feel warm, or maybe even break into a slight sweat.
If #2 is addressed to my liking, I will do the communal thing.

There will be different dishes in different varieties.
But, of course, what is blindingly hot to some is not detectable to others. It's impossible to make everybody's happy.

I'm convinced. I'll trust CFLarsens menu.
I like very spicy food (European scale) or mildly spicy food (Thai scale).
This is probably hard to avoid at a Thai restaurant in the US (I suspect the US scale is close to the European :)).

I will eat anything that doesn't involved raw meat. And I don't eat much.

The only kind of spicy food I don't like is stuff that's hot without flavor -- like Buffalo wings. I would hardly think that a Thai food aficionado like CFLarsen would afflict us with bland food at "the best Thai restaurant in the country." I won't say "have faith," I'll say "figure it out, dudes and dudettes." I would also think that people who don't like spicy food will be eating at the Peppermill or Denny's. Or Tony *****' Roma's.
My favorite Thai restaurant has some dishes marked with an asterisk for "spicy dish." Some are marked with two asterisks, for "VERY spicy dish." On those, the LD50 is about ten bites.

Oy, vey. This is one of the misconceptions I want to bury.
Thai food doesn't have to be spicy to be good. Thai food - especially like the food we will get - is first and foremost taste. You won't walk away with 5 pounds of meat in your belly. You will be full on taste.
Lotus of Siam has a scale for spiciness: 1-10. 1 is barably noticeable, 9 being deadly. 10 is reserved for Planet X. But don't expect an evening of pure fire and brimstone. Some dishes might be too hot for you, some might be bland. The thing is, it is impossible to gauge the appropriate spiciness for so many people. That's why I go for taste, rather that spice.
Oh, before you go to the restaurant, don't eat or drink something that will kill your taste buds.
Two of my party aren't big on red meat (not me, I'm a meativor) - will there be a fair proportion of non-red meat dishes to red? If so, groovy, if not, I'll tell them to let me know what they want.
Thai food is not big on red meat. Everything's cooked. Most is even dead. :)

CF, I was fully expecting exactly what you described. I do not equate "spicy" and "hot," and good food does not have to melt my eyeballs. Some Thai food is spicy without being hot, some is spicy and hot, some is spicy and incendiary. It's all good.

No fish? Yay! Much as I try, I can't acquire a taste for fish, although I do like shrimp to some degree. My only real exposure to Thai food has pretty much been Pad Thai (with tofu or chicken..yum!) and I assumed that most other dishes would be seafood based. Spicy food I enjoy anywhere from mild to just shy of "make my eyes bleed." Reader's Digest version - the communal meal sounds good!
