I noticed Micky Dolenz was on the list. He was a celebrity guest of John Edward a few months back. He was with his fiancee and daughter. One of them is a 'spiritual artist' and he showed some of her work displayed in his home. He was quite impressed with the readings he and the two women recieved.
It makes me wonder how accurate the rest of the list is.

What is the difference between agnostic and ambiguous? Generally, I would think that ambiguous just means the site doesnt really know, but from the site it seems that ambiguous might mean agnostic, ie the site seems to suggest that ambiguous means that the named people are not sure hence the need more info statement. I guess the need more info means the site needs more info, and that to make the agnostic list you actually have to declare yourself agnostic. Plus, why would they put down a list of names about people that the site 'cant tell if agnostic, athiest, or a believer'?

You can be an atheist/agnostic and still believe in other paranormal crap.

By John Carmack I am guessing they mean the game maker. It is the first programmer I've ever seen called a celebrity.

""Nah, there's no bigger atheist than me. Well, I take that back. I'm a cancer screening away from going agnostic and a biopsy away from full-fledged Christian." (Details magazine, October 1997, p. 78) " -Adam Carolla.

Look now! I try not to do too much of correcting people's spelling (because when I try, I inevitably mess up some simple word through a typo or thinko). But I must make it clear to all that it is atheist. The opposite of theist. We are not the most athy people. It is not a comparative. If it confuses you, I don't believe I've ever seen athiesm, so you can use that to remember. Grrr.

Linus Torvalds is also on the list, so now there's two! But looking again at some of the other names on here, I think "celebrity" is being pretty generous. I mean come on -- "James Randi"? I've never even heard of that guy.

Actually, I don't care...I don't base my beliefs (such as they are) on whether a celeb or some other "authority" says something is so...I just posted the site location as there is, from time to time, a discussion about atheists and atheism.
I no more care about this than, say, a Hal Lindsey cartoon, save for the power to amuse (something the Lindsey cartoons you post never do...they're just sort of sad...).

In what sense? Are they saying "hey, you should be atheist because all these famous people are?" No, it's just interesting. The Onion AV Club ran an article once that was just a bunch of people they had interviewed answering the question "do you believe in God?" It was really interesting, but it didn't affect my beliefs one way or the other. Although it did influence my opinion of some celebrities :D
I was fairly suprised to see Dave Barry on there, though.
I think with respect to agnostic/ambiguous, it's a question of the agnostics saying "I'm agnostic," and the ambiguous folks never really saying for sure, but one thing they said could be taken one way, but then this other thing.....etc.

Anyone else notice that Alexander Cockburn was listed right next to Alan Cumming?
I feel the need to watch Beavis & Butthead, although I've never done that before.

There are some interesting quotes from the celebs when you click on their names. I recommend:
Ira Glass
Penn Jillette (of course)
George Carlin

He's been very frank about his atheism in a couple of interviews I've read. Actually, the first time I remember seeing it mentioned was on a series of Usenet post many years ago. They were by was this hardcore Christian guy who was a huge fan, and wanted desperately to interview Dave for some Christian magazine. IIRC, he assumed that Dave was a Christian, more or less because anybody with that much humor and insight and love of life had to be. When he finally got Dave on the phone and Dave told him "You probably don't really want to interview me, because I'm an atheist," the guy was crushed.

edited to add: That said, I agree it is, in some cases, entertaining reading. I go back to Carlin's stuff once every other month at least. :)

The only real problem I have with the linked site is that it relies too much on what people say in passing and less on explicit statements.
Examples would be Adam Corrola's repeated statements that he's an atheist or Phil Plait's (and while not a "star" he's certainly a celeb to those of us who've met him) explicit statement that he doesn't believe in a devine being.
Many of the quotes on the celeb atheist site are ambiguous at best.
I'm not questioning that there aren't plenty of celeb atheists out there.. I'm just being skeptical of the interpretations of the content of this site.
- As an aside, Joy Behar of the view has certainly alluded to her being atheist, anyone have any quotes that concrete this fact?

I could have sworn that Jesse Ventura considered himself an atheist. But after looking on the web for some corroborating evidence, I found some indication that he made some anti-religious statements, which he later claimed were taken out of context after they caused a lot of hoopla. His actual quote was: "organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers. It tells people to go out and stick their noses in other people's business." This article (http://www.atheists.org/flash.line/ventura3.htm) shows some of his statements. I thought this quote was hilariously ironic:
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) asked his Coalition audience, "Can you believe a governor of a state in America would say such an insensitive, bigoted thing?"

Can't say I'd put much stock in this list. They mention a lot of people I've never heard of, and then omit obvious celebrity atheists such as Wendell Vaughn and Bruce Wayne.
