That is more than quote mining, that is faking a video for thei own agenda.
That's a big no-no.

well except for the links they are just presenting scenes from the episode out of context
but yeah, making the 9/11 links look like part of the credits is bad, mmkay?

They better be careful. Given how easy the SP boys went on the truthers the last time, I don't think the wingnuts want to piss off the SP Crew...or the next time, it will not be so pretty.

I agree with TAM. If they piss off Trey and the gang too much, "retard" will be one of the milder things said the next time around.
Reeeeeeealllly.

You would think that Dylan and the crew would understand the importance of the phrase "cease and desist" by now.

I love the end of that episode when Bush explains to the boys what the government did. It's the closest the CTers are ever gonna get to a unified story.

For those of us who don't want to watch the whole clip (having seen the whole episode already) could someone summarize what is at the end or what is altered?

1. Quote from the end of the episode is put into the middle making it seem like the administration is laughing at the fact that Stan said "a bunch of pissed off muslims" were the ones who attacked us.
2. Links for the 9/11 "truth" movement in the credits.

It is one thing to illegally place a copy of the show on youtube. that they seem to tolerate. I doubt, however, that Trey et al or their lawyers will take kindly to misrepresenting the episode, the creators, etc...copyright infringement and making an incorrect statement wrt the views of the creators and then posting it for all to see...
How would one go about notifying the SP legal people?

It seems to be hosted by piratenews.org
I don't want to get some little 15y old geek in trouble, do you think these guys are worthwhile reporting, or are they just a bunch of little twirps who dont know what they are doing?

I am a parent. I know what I would feel like if I had lawyers call me up about my son doing this ****. That said, I suppose the lesson would definitely be learned...wouldnt it.
I will consider this...

Perhaps I will email piratenews.org and tell them to remove it from their youtube list or else I will email southpark. At least this gives them an out, and still gets the shaite taken down.

May be a better idea indeed. Or threaten to tell his mom.

And I though Google was purging all the copyright infringements from You Tube?

1. Quote from the end of the episode is put into the middle making it seem like the administration is laughing at the fact that Stan said "a bunch of pissed off muslims" were the ones who attacked us.
2. Links for the 9/11 "truth" movement in the credits.3. The presentation were Cartman accuses Kyle of being responsible for 9/11 is shortened. Cartman's obviously ridiculous conclusion is left out and the question who did actually did do it appears rhetorical.
4. The end of the episode is entirely missing. That's the part where it is revealed that the 9/11 truth movement itself is a government conspiracy (a hypothesis that is far more likely than most conspiracy theories that are making the rounds), and president Bush's shooting of the truther was actually staged.
5. As can be read in the description by piratenews.com next to the Google Video, references to homosexuality are removed.
6. No turds
And most importantly:
7. No jokes.
This reediting of the video basically has taken everything that can be mistaken as validating the 9/11 'truth' movement, and that resulted in an episode of just under 9 minutes.
May be a better idea indeed. Or threaten to tell his mom. Here's an even better idea, IMHO: just kindly inform the Southpark people of the existence of the video. If they want to do something against it, they will. But that is not obvious. I'll bet they'll think it is actually pretty funny that there are people who think that they were actually complimented.
I don't see what "threatening to tell the makers of Southpark" (or mom) is going to accomplish. The person who spreads this video around obviously seems to think the makers of Southpark agrees with him so he's not going to be afraid of what they might do. It is also whiny; "Oh, I am sooo going to *tell*!"

I sent the link in this thread to the email in this thread. Even if they can't pass it on to Matt and Trey, someone's sure to read the email, see the video and have a giggle about how much spare time the Twoofers obviously have.

Thanks for the complete list.
As for telling, it isnt so much a "I'm gonna tell" thing, as you are right, that is juvenile, so much as it is trying to some how, some way, let them know there are limits. I mean LC is bad enough in all that it rips off, but at least, so far as I can tell, it does not alter the actual content of what it rips off, and most of what it takes are news broadcasts, which has less creative or artistic input to be messed with than a "southpark" episode.
Now most will laugh when one calls South Park "art", but that is what it is.
In the end, you are likely right. Any form of repremand short of civil law suit, will likely be water off a ducks back.

this actually makes me feel sorry for the truthers, they are so insecure in their own convictions that they have to re-edit a cartoon to make themselves look good
Housefly
5th November 2006, 02:48 PM
Not only that, but a cartoon that many of them thought was on their side in the first place.
I don't have the slightest problem with South Park episodes being available online, and I doubt the show's writers do either- they did a whole episode once about how artists should be glad people are enjoying their creations rather than insisting that they pay full price for it.
But I don't think they'd appreciate someone cutting up their art/creative output/whatever you want to call South Park, and making the writers' position appear to be the exact opposite of what it really is.

I believe this would fall under Droit Moral (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droit_moral).
Specificly the part about mutilation/distortion. Which means that the SP boys have realistic grounds for a lawsuit the size of....well.....the solarsystem should they decide to pursue this further.
Anyone contacted them yet?

I m not sure that Comedy Central has directly asked Youtube to take down copywritten video, but I know that in the case of the Colbert Report, it was their parent company, Viacom.

Empahsis mine. Matt and Trey don't have a problem with it. Comedy Central does however.True. I was just saying, their attitude towards filesharing will be different to their attitude to people doing... well, this.
I guess to their bosses it's one and the same though. If anything this wouldn't be so bad because they're not showing the full episode.
