November 6, 2006 -- ALBANY -

Gov. Pataki has granted an upstate farm $15,000 to buy mattresses - for its older cows!

The pampered bovines are in Kernel Acres Sunset View Farm, in Rensselaer County, one of 17 farms to share more than $200,000 in grants designed to better New York farms.

"It was only a matter of time before we got to building retirement homes for cows," said E.J. McMahon, head of the Manhattan Institute's Empire Center for New York State Policy.

So I checked it out and there it was, a cow mattress:

Trust you to milk this for all it's worth. From what I've herd, unless there's an udder side to the story, nothing important is at steak --- so what's your beef?

I found the thread title confusing. I thought it meant NY granted money to cows so that they could attempt growing mattresses on their farms. I had a charming mental picture of a cow driving a tractor, scratching her head and wondering why her crop of Serta Posturepedics weren't coming up. Probably the pH of the soil.

The cream of the joke is that this gubenatorial decision is, at its base, pork! :)

But I can make mincemeat of your arguments. I'm not easily cowed.

The wurst thing you could try to do is attempt to convince me that this isn't all a lot of baloney. Try hamming it up in another thread. Your bovine humor is boaring me.

I'm not entirely sure why this is particularly silly. (Except for the fact that cows are silly animals, of course. lol moo~) Cows aren't really designed to stand on cement or whatever the floors of farms are made out of, so a "cow mattress" seems like a fairly useful thing for treating cows humanely. And $15,000 isn't that much money, both when you divide by however many matresses they must've bought and when you divide by the number of taxpayers there are in New York.

[insert cow pun here]

We all know the floors of farms are full of big spikes. Farms are mean. :(

And it's up to taxpayers to help private businesses purchase legitimate, or even illegitimate "touchy-feely" expenses. But it works because it gets votes.

Elsie why would they do it?
