View Full Version : Deja vu

One of the cooler experiences most of us have had is deja vu. I have it rarely anymore. When I was younger it happened quite a bit. My knee jerk reaction to it is always to think it's a good omen - I guess out of fear that it could be a bad omen. There are several theories about what is occurring when we experience deja vu. Of course, it's more fun to think of it as sort of a premonition. This is an experience I once had when I was in my early twenties: I walked into a room and there was a woman I knew sitting there in nice coat with a fur collar. I suddenly got a strong experience of deja vu. The strange thing was the sense of deja vu seemed to extend forward in time. In the deja vu, so to speak, I was supposed to compliment this woman on her coat. Instead I consciously decided not to do that. Now, I don't kid myself that the experience is anything other than a trick of the mind, but, still, I have always vaguely felt that I might have broken something or changed my fate by disobeying my deja vu. Do you guys have any interesting deja vu experiences?

Deja vu is my favourite Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young album.

Funny you should mention it. I had one in a meeting yesterday. I don't like the feeling of Deja vu, and try to stop it by saying "Oh! Deja vu!", sometimes that doesn't work and the feeling can last a few seconds.
A far weirder mental sensation can come over me when I am around an old object, (cases I can remember are An old stone bridge, an old photograph and strangely looking at the roots of a tree that had been blown over, the root knot was huge!) any way, if I am around something like that I sometimes get a weird mental pulling sensation as I try to think about the time that has elapsed. I mentioned this to my mother once and she said "Really? I get that too, I call it time warp!" So I don't know if it has a genetic root or we are both just weired. I imagine that the strange pulling/falling feeling might be akin to the start of a seizure as there seems to be the inability to control it and it has a strange 'coming to a boil' quality to it, followed by a sudden 'snapping out' of the sensation. Sorry for the weird descriptions but it's hard to describe a mental feeling!

Of course there's also reja vu (as coined by Terry Pratchett) - the overwhelming feeling that you are going to be in the same situation in the future.
What I find weird about deja vu is that at the time it seems I am remembering something, but then when I think about it I realise that I can only remember having remembered it, and I probably didn't remember having remembered it until after if had happened. Sometimes I make my head hurt.

I usually get more of the Steve Martin type, 'vuja de';
That feeling that this has never happened before. ;)

Was that Steve Martin or George Carlin? I thought it was a Carlin bit, but perhaps he borrowed it. Maybe its just really old, and the first person I happened to here it from was Carlin? :D
