This weeks commentary has a brief mention of an art student who was expelled after an argument with another student. I read this article about a week ago and was surprised it was not mentioned here yet.
Here is the original story http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Content?oid=84436&category=22101
Two things: One I don't see how this is perceived as man expelled because he is an atheist. It sounds more to me like man is flaming jerk who has had more than one run in at the school and is trying to claim a right to be a jerk based on religious freedom (granted there aren't enough details in the story to really know but if I had to guess why he got expelled it would be the reason I just gave and not some anti atheist prejudice).
The other thing is;how obnoxious do you have to be to get in altercations with your instructors that result in disciplinary action? I have never known anyone this happened to, in fact I have never heard of this happening to anyone before this article. (maybe art school discussions are more heated than Comp Sci discussions?)
Well, sorry make that three things: I live in a pretty conservative area and I am pretty certain that the vast majority of students and faculty would bend over backwards to accommodate an atheist or member of any other non Judeo Christian religion. It is really hard to imagine an anti atheist bias that would result in expelling a student.
