View Full Version : Steven Harper conspiring to sell Canada to Bush

Bit of a change of gears from our usual non-stop 9-11 silliness.
Y'all ready for the biggest land grab since the Blitzkrieg of 1940? (http://www.agoracosmopolitan.com/home/Frontpage/2006/09/26/01226.html)
The article itself is so silly it hardly needs to be debunked. It's twice as funny for a canuck reading it as it is for a yank. The author gets extra points in hysterical paranoia for accusing NDP leader Jack Layton of being one of Harper's accomplices. For you yanks, this is like Noam Chomsky conspiring with Rush Limbaugh to turn a bird sanctuary into a porn shop.

I wouldn't sell World Net Daily short, at least not in the conspiracy theory department.
It was WND's John Mosely who first exposed "Scholars for Beam Weapons" James Fetzer as an anti-semite.
James Fetzer, a philosophy professor at the University of Minnesota who poses as a scientist, praised Venezuela President Hugo Chavez and promoted Chavez's proposal for an international criminal tribunal to put the Bush administration on trial. By e-mail, professor Fetzer accused me of being Jewish – sadly, I am not – because I disagree with his theories (http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=51540).
-Moseley
"His blizzard of posts of low intellectual quality led me to send an e-mail asking about his background and education. In the absence of a response, I offered my own guess about the kind of person who would behave like this, speculating that he was 15 years old, very bright, probably Jewish, possibly a resident of Brooklyn, attending a scientific/technological high school, who believes that he is superior to everyone else and has an obsession to try and prove it!" (http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=51579)

I don't know much about Canadian politics, but I do remember that there was a guy who proposed a law that would require national referendums on any petition signed by some percentage of the voters.
A comedy show then put out an online petition that would compel this guy to change his first name to Doris (his last name was Day). It got the required number of votes rather quickly. I did my part by voting at least 10 times even though I'm an American.
I have to hand it to the Canadians. Their politics are WAY better than ours.

Why should we buy Canada when we can just take it?
The plans (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/29/AR2005122901412_pf.html) are already drawn up. It's only a matter of time...
Invading Canada won't be like invading Iraq: When we invade Canada, nobody will be able to grumble that we didn't have a plan.
The United States government does have a plan to invade Canada. It's a 94-page document called "Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan -- Red," with the word SECRET stamped on the cover. It's a bold plan, a bodacious plan, a step-by-step plan to invade, seize and annex our neighbor to the north. It goes like this:
First, we send a joint Army-Navy overseas force to capture the port city of Halifax, cutting the Canadians off from their British allies.
Then we seize Canadian power plants near Niagara Falls, so they freeze in the dark.
Then the U.S. Army invades on three fronts -- marching from Vermont to take Montreal and Quebec, charging out of North Dakota to grab the railroad center at Winnipeg, and storming out of the Midwest to capture the strategic nickel mines of Ontario.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy seizes the Great Lakes and blockades Canada's Atlantic and Pacific ports.
At that point, it's only a matter of time before we bring these Molson-swigging, maple-mongering Zamboni drivers to their knees! Or, as the official planners wrote, stating their objective in bold capital letters: "ULTIMATELY TO GAIN COMPLETE CONTROL."
That's right, Canada: :Dancing_growl:

That's right, Canada: :Dancing_growl:
Ahem:
Invading Canada is an old American tradition. Invading Canada successfully is not.
During the American Revolution, Benedict Arnold -- then in his pre-traitor days -- led an invasion of Canada from Maine. It failed.
During the War of 1812, American troops invaded Canada several times. They were driven back.
In 1839, Americans from Maine confronted Canadians in a border dispute known as the Aroostook War.
"There were never any shots fired," said Etzinger, the Canadian Embassy spokesman, "but I think an American cow was injured -- and a Canadian pig."
In 1866, about 800 Irish Americans in the Fenian Brotherhood decided to strike a blow for Irish independence by invading Canada. They crossed the Niagara River into Ontario, where they defeated a Canadian militia. But when British troops approached, the Fenians fled back to the United States, where many were arrested.
After that, Americans stopped invading Canada and took up other hobbies, such as invading Mexico, Haiti, Nicaragua, Grenada and, of course, Iraq.
But the dream of invading Canada lives on in the American psyche, occasionally manifesting itself in bizarre ways. Movies, for instance.
Bring it on, Yankee-boy!

The USA couldn't afford to buy us, them being in multi-trillion dollar debt and if the cost of invading a nation the size of Newfoundland (Iraq) is any indication, then they cannot afford to invade Canada either.:D

Some Quebecois think that they can secede without taking on any of the Canadian government debt. If that is true, then I would propose that the rest of the country secede and form the new country of Canadia, after all its how many people already think the country is spelt. On the other hand they might just decide to join the United States of Americaa instead.

Actually this is a misrepresentation of the possiblities that arise if Quebec is successfl in separating. Quebec doing so would set a precedent and thus other reions could decide to also separate from the Federation of Canadian Provinces and then could also request that the USA absorb them as another of the United States of America.
As pointed out any separating region would be required to shoulder an appropriate portion of the national debt ( just like in divorces) and therfore any region taken in by the USA would also be taking debt with them.

As pointed out any separating region would be required to shoulder an appropriate portion of the national debt ( just like in divorces) and therfore any region taken in by the USA would also be taking debt with them.
It should also be noted that it would not be the province of Quebec that secedes, it would be the Quebecois people. How much of the province they would get is open to debate. The natives who control much of the resource rich northern and western sections of the province have already said they are staying put. Any "Nation of Quebec" that would be created would be realtively tiny compared to the province.
I see little chance of any portion of Canada seeking to join the US with the possible exception of Alberta (not the brightest folks in the great white north). Thanks to Bush, America has a relatively low popularity rating nowadays.
For the chap who asked, Canada has a larger, wealthier, and far better educated population than Iraq. The armed forces are indeed smaller numerically (even accepting the US propaganda about the "5th largest army in the world"). However it is pretty unlikely that the Canadian forces would roll over and play dead as they did in Iraq. Moreover, Iraq had no allies. Just imagine the US going to the security council to ask for help with this task, troops would be lining up to help Canada.
On the idea of purchasing Canada, the US would have to go cap in hand to the Chinese. They certainly can't afford to do it on their own, thanks once again to George Bush. The Chinese might then choose the easier option and just foreclose on the US since Canada's value would be a fair amount higher (far larger existing resource base).
In short, I would argue that the smartest thing the US could do is "don't bite the hand that feeds them".

I know I have told this story on JREF before, but it seems to fit well here.
I grew up in Windsor, and we used to go to northern Michigan often to shop. Once, when we mentioned to a store worker that we were from Ontario, she first of all asked, "Ontario, is that any where near Toronto?". She then said "Wow, it must be cold up there in Canada right now".
We tried to explain to her that we were actually 2 hours SOUTH of her, so it was actually quite a bit warmer where we were. She could not grasp this concept; I wish I had a map on me at the time.

I don't actually own a province so I'd have to say zero. If you mean the province I have lived the longest in, then it would also be zero (having lived in Alberta for 15 of my 47 years). I admit their genius in having the province sitting squarely on large oil reserves.

Dude, I think Iraq had both a bigger population and a bigger army. :D
We don't need to invade Canada, we'll just take out a bunch of put options on them...
Iraq's army? Yeah, they were effective:boggled:
Dude, they were defeated and it was "mission accomplished" long ago.
Right????
Face it, invading Canada would be a lot like trying to invade Russia. Takes more manpower than any single country has.
I'm with T.A.M. If you're gonna do it then get going before the January rush to Fla. beaches.

And given that they cannot do so unilaterally, and that they would have to negotiate with the rest of the country to secede at all, my guess is that the chances of them actually seceding are slim.
For those who are interested, here's a link to the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in the Reference re Secession of Quebec in 1998 which dealt with the issue.

Face it, invading Canada would be a lot like trying to invade Russia. Takes more manpower than any single country has.Now that is hilarious. 90% of your population is assembled along the US border. Compare that to Russia. The US could capture your entire country, easily, in a day, starting with your power plants. C'mon. You know you want it! And NORAD is a joint US-Canadian organization. We could just tell you, "Hey, we've cancelled those exercises. You can take your radar down for maintenance now." Then we'd bomb the crap out of your air force.
You do have an air force, don't you? The RCAF? Oh, no, they went away. I'm sure you have some planes or something, right?
Look, my city only has 40% fewer policemen than your entire country has armed forces: land, sea, and air. You don't need to surrender. You already have. It's just that nobody noticed when you waved the white flag.

I think it's just a case of a photographer being alert. There have been many times when I momentarily held a lenscapped camera or binoculars to my face, but no one was there to snap a photo at that instant. As much as I despise Bush, this seems to be one of those "gotcha" moments that every president must dread.

I do it all the time and practically sleep with my binos around my neck. But I still think the photo is fake - the light is coming through the lenses and hitting Dubyas face. It's a slow debunking day, so I'll stick with this. The light hitting the bridge of Dubya's nose appears to be directly from the sun. Light coming through the ocular lens of a binocular is tightly focused and would noticeably brighten his eye, not his nose. In this Snopes article we see the lens caps off: http://www.snopes.com/photos/politics/binoculars.asp
There's always the possibility that Bush started with the lens caps off, but they were hastily applied when he caught a glimpse of the Robot Don Cherry Squadron.
