I was at a friend's B-day party Friday evening and the discussion led to 9-11 conspiracies. It went like this:
Someone commented and complained about Chaka Fatah (Philly's representative and Cadidate for Mayor) has expressed desire that Mumia Abu Jamal get a freee trial. Our light-weight conspiracist commented that two of the key witness changed their minds. I pointed out that wasn't true, and that the only witnesses who 'changed their minds' weren't really witnesses at all.
At one point I commented that Mumia must be upset because his followers all became 9-11 deniers. After I explained to other folks in the party what that is our LWCT said he had some DVDs that if we had seen would change out minds..
My instant reaction was "Oh god..not Loose Change".
His reply was "No! Well I have that one, but I was more impressed by Dr. Jones of Bringham Young University"
So it went. I pointed out that Jones was not a very good scientists, noting his Cold Fusion nonsense, and naturally I pointed out that Jones makes some critical errors.
So naturally, we ended up at WTC7. It came down that he couldn't understand why it fell in its footprint and wanted examples of other buildings that fell. I pointed out that it had burned for seven hours unfought, and that it had huge gashes from debris falling from WTC1 & 2. I don't think out LWCT knew about that.
This wasn't the best circumstances for debate, and I forgot a lot of things. I pointed out Kader Toy Factory and the near destruction of Philly's own Meridian Plaza, but I missed on pointing out the Madrid Windsor and its steel failure. I also forgot to point out that WTC7 didn't really fall into its footprint, having blocked a street and damaged nearby buildings.
Rather than getting into it too deeply, he said "I guess we should agree to disagree". I agreed that was fair enough. He's not a Dylan cultist, and actually is a reaesonable and fun guy. I didn;t want the party conversation to get too intense and I think I showed to him that there was a lot of information that Dr. Jones wasn't telling his audience. Who knows if anything really sank in, but he is the first person I've encountered in person who actually has fallen for some of these 911 arguements. I may have faltered since there was so much disinformation to mend, I just hope I got the point across that there's a lot more info than what the nutters are telling you.
