Do any of you think they'll make a difference this year?

I wish so many people didn't apply the following "equation":
Fourth of July + Exploding objects + Beer = Fun!

I agree -- why wait for the fourth of July? You can burn down your neighborhood and lose an eye -any- time.

Besides, who really needs to count to ten, anyway?

Here in Texas, a terrorist attack is only slightly rowdier than a typical July 4 celebration.
Seriously, I feel pretty safe. My wife is worried that the terrorists will "wipe out Texas", but I told her they don't have anywhere near the resources to wreak this kind of havoc, even if they wanted to.

I think it is impossible to determine how many injuries are prevented. I suppose you could take before and after numbers and come up with a figure, but it would still be a guess. But safety warnings do have some kind of impact. At least on the job they do. I don't know about the home.

Feh! You can probably get quite a few Mt out of all those firework stands there and across the border. No fancy planning, just send a guy out with a book of matches and FOOM! The half the state is gone.

What bothers me as that people remember to lock up their firearms(usually but that's another subject) and do not lock up their fireworks. Cool! Dad has m80's let's steal some!
I had a friend who got her finger mostly blown off by and m80. She was about 12 and her friend found the father's fireworks. The friend lit it and threw it at the girl who got her finger blown off. It's kind of insinctual to try to catch something being thrown at you and that's exactly what happened. Unfortunately, it was an important finger- the pointer finger on her right hand.

My parents almost lost a house this way when I was in 8th grade. Even in my tender youth out in the country, I knew not to use fireworks -- especially bottle rockets -- when there hadn't been rain in something like 8 weeks.
Our idiot neighbor, however (some distance away - we were on 17 acres) did not. Launched bottle rockets that set a large patch of the afore-mentioned 17 acres on fire, with the wind blowing toward the house.
I and my brother ran out and began beating the flames with shovels and turning over dirt (after calling the fire dept.). Fire never got -truly- close to the house - 120-150 feet - but much too close for comfort. Fire department didn't arrive for well over half an hour, by which time we had managed to stop its progress.
Idiot neighbor offered no help whatsoever. If I had any energy left after the 30-45 minutes of work, I might have taken the shovel over to his place and worked him over.
