Not really sure what forum this belongs in, but: (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3026104.stm)

The Taikong Corporation took DNA from a jellyfish and inserted it into a zebra fish to make it shine a yellow-green colour.

GM animals are frequently used in labs and flocks of GM sheep make valuable proteins in their milk, but the "Night Pearl" zebra fish is the first gene-altered pet to go on sale to the public. Of course, we can expect protests.

Pretty cool though! I guess you'd save money on your tank lighting, if nothing else. What I want, though, is a glow in the dark cat. I keep tripping over mine when I get up in the night. ;)

They say it's sterile and you can't breed them. That diminishes their value.

I suppose so.

The thing about keeping aquarium fish though is that they die.

From an article in the WSJ on the same topic... Like many biologists in his field, Prof. Tsai was using a fluorescent protein extracted from jellyfish as a genetic marker, attaching it to DNA in embryonic fish to make specific genes easier to see under a microscope. Laboratories elsewhere have produced partially fluorescent pigs, mice and insects.

"Pork,the other green meat."

Why DO they do that?

(PS: Does yours look like Eddy's as well?)

(PS: Does yours look like Eddy's as well?) They think they’re so smart because they can see in the dark. I’m going to have to get some night vision gear to keep one up on them.

What is “Eddy’s”?

So they got GFP expressed in fish... *yawn*...

This isnt news, GFP has been expressed in fish loooooooooooooong ago (like before 2000).

According to Derek Lambert, of Today's Fishkeeper magazine, GM piranhas could survive in our waterways and pose a major problem. He is urging traders to boycott the TK-1.

Where the hell did this freak arrive with piranas?!

 x10000000.

SINGAPOREAN authorities have confiscated 400 aquarium fish genetically modified to make them glow in the dark.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority feared the tiny green fluorescent fish could get into the wild and wreak havoc on Singapore's ecosystem, spokesman Goh Shi-Yong said today.

We've finally accomplished what man thought was only a dream, we've finally genetically altered cute little fishies to cause them to glow in the dark, just think of the possibilities...
