How much does the California power crisis of a couple years back feed into his recall drive? Or does it mostly have to do with how the state has been run since then?

The recall effort, I believe, was due to a number of factors. Let me list some.

1) The $38 billion dollar budget deficit created by Soviet-style economics.

2) Davis' sole veto of Prop 187, an initiative that took millions of people and tens of millions of dollars and years to pass by popular vote.

3) Lack of a credible candidate to face Davis in the last election. I think the Republicans really didn't want to win the office, knowing how devasted the state was by Davis.

4) The endless tide of illegal immigration into California which has eliminated the quality of life in most areas of the state.

Those are the four big reasons why the recall effort is in play, IMO.

That is quite a bit of the story, not the whole story. Davis has been giving state contracts to companies that give him the largest campaign contributions. And Davis' solution to the problem includes what he said he wouldn't do in his re-election speeches: raise taxes.

Here's a story from the Recall Gray Davis site. (http://www.davisrecall.com/about/)

I made the question because I drew the conclusion that energy companies were mostly responsible for the power crisis and that the "shortage" was a fraud.

However, I'm not closed-minded to the idea that Gov. Davis may have mishandled his end of it as well. I'm certainly not impressed by him. Personally I think the Democrats should dump him.
