View Full Version : TAM Attendees Picture Thread

Unrepentant Sinner suggested in another thread:
That's why I continually suggest posting a photo of yourself before hand as a courtesy if you plan on socializing with people to whom you previously were only text and 100x100 pixel avatars. At 3 TAMs I've recognized dozens of people on sight who I had previously never met IRL because they posted photos.
Saying you're a 35-year-old six-foot guy with a beard is as worthless as saying you'll be the one wearing a shirt and pants.
So I figured I'd create a thread to allow those who wish to post a mug shot for the rest of us to do so.
I probably can recognize about 30-40 Forumites by sight/name/Forum name and some others by sight. But there will be over 100 folks from the Forum in a crowd I expect will be close to 1000, so recognizing someone is going to help.
I'll start off with my picture:

Wow, your beard grows fast!
Funny story about that: I originally intended to post a photo of me with Kari Byron from Dragon*Con, for the third one. I accidentally chose the Summer Glau one, instead, and realized it was probably a better choice, anyway.
Here is my photo with Kari (and other MythBusters) from D*C:
http://www.mitchlampert.net/CelebPics/MythBusters3.jpg
My shirt is different, because it was taken the next day. (Yes, I do own more than one shirt!)
(FYI: The photo at the top of my "jealousy" post (#28) was taken at TAM4, the one in the middle taken at a hotel bar during the Environmental Wars conference. Kari showed up at both, for some reason.)
I am not sure if I will have a beard or not during TAM5. It depends on how lazy I am the few weeks before it.
Remind me to tell you the story of how I came to suspect (incorrectly) that Kari was "stalking" me, some day.
We could take up a collection and buy him a second shirt. What's wrong with a consistent look? Cartoon characters do it all the time!

I think she's stalking you.
That was my theory.
See, when I registered for TAM4, the only MythBusters guests that were scheduled to show up were the main dudes: Adam and Jamie. After I registered, Kari also decided to show up.
Then, at the Environmental Wars, it looked like Adam was going to be a guest, according to all the publicity. But, after I arrive, guess who decides to show up instead... Kari! And she brought Peter Rees (creator of the MB show, and the other guy in the photo) with her.
Then there was Dragon*Con. When I registered for it, there was no mention that any of the MythBusters were going to show up. But then, a few weeks after I registered, guess who gets added to the guest list? That's right! Kari Byron, again!! This time, she had brought some of the other Build-Team members with her.
Not that I mind the attention, though. :D

But, everyone knows psychic powers don't work when there is "negative energy" eminating from any skeptics that happen to be around! That's why no psychic has gotten the million, yet. And, I have a funny feeling Kari is just the sort of gal to eminate such negative vibes.
A better explanation is that she is using me as a role model for the sorts of events a good geek should attend. Any event I attend must be geeky, therefore she must attend it, also!

lol... I *may* check it. If I can figure out how in advance and make it a stress-free experience. If not, I'm going to jam every little thing I own into one bag, or possibly wear all my clothes.Checking luggage is pretty stress-free, but not always. There's always a tiny bit of stress until your bag comes out. Because many bags look alike, I suggest putting something distinctive on your bag. Tie a ribbon to a handle or put a sticker on it. The last time I flew into Vegas, I waited 20 minutes or so by the baggage carousel before the bags from my flight arrived. Which carousel your flight is using is on signs on the carousels, and may also be shown on the "arrivals" monitors.
Most airlines charge you extra if your bag is heavy. I think the limit is 50 pounds, and some airlines have scales you can use to check.
If you choose to carry everything on, you'll get out of the airport faster. You can bring two items on board. Bring one item that will fit in the overhead storage bins and a large bag that will fit under the seat. The bag I bring for 'under the seat' is about 12" x 16" x 10".
Bring books. You'll have lots of time to read before and during your flight.

If you have a long flight, or if you need to change planes during your trip, check your luggage. Schlepping luggage around an airport sucks. Checking luggage is easy, just follow the signs at the airport. I use the 'curb side' check-in all the time, as it is generally faster, you don't have to wait in a potentially long line at the ticket counter. If you curb-check, and print your boarding pass out from home, you won't have any lines except the security line. Remember that some airlines charge a couple dollars per bag to use the curb-side, and you will want to leave a small tip for whoever handles the luggage, like a dollar or two per bag. So, if you check one bag, you may be talking bout 3-4 bucks to avoid some hassle. If you take yourself to the airport, drive to the curb-side, check your luggage, then park your car. If someone is taking you, they can drop you right there. If you carry your luggage on, it will save you 10-20 minutes in the LV airport, but if you're not in a rush to be somewhere, it's not really that long. On my frequent short hops, I carry my luggage, unless I have to take my computer.
The ziplock has to be one-quart size, no bigger (and no smaller for some strange reason). I had a half-empty 3.5 oz toothpaste bottle and one guy let it through, but on the return trip, the next guy took it. Lipstick doesn't count, but lip gloss or gel does. I'm not advocating bypassing security, but I've been known to put a tube of lipgloss in my jeans pocket, which does not set the detectors off. Of course, if you are randomly picked for a pat-down, there it is.
For carryon, that depends on your flight time. Anything under two hours I consider a hop, and might take only a book stuck in my purse. I tend to doze off (which is why I like window seats, I can rest my head against the wall) Long flights, or with plane changes, I take something do to - like needlework, a notebook/travel diary I sometimes write in, etc.
It's an adventure!

RemieV, Skeptic Scott and Geek Goddess offer much good advice. If you are really an inexperienced traveller (and not just our leg pulling, as my old dutch grandpa would have said), then may I, as another frequent flyer, offer a couple of suggestions:
1. Make sure you get to the departure airport at least two hours prior to your leaving (3 if you're flying international, I do not know where you are from). You can check at least two bags of 50lbs each; I would recommend that you check the bags in at the ticket counter rather than outside at the curb. That way you get your boarding passes and can watch them put the stickers on the bag for your destination.
2. As Scott notes, you can carry a smaller bag (usually less than 30 lbs, but few airlines ever check it) and a hand-held object (purse, bag, etc.) However, they will have to go through security and it can slow you down--one reason to get to the airport early. These days I carry a book and my ticket with me and that is about all.
3. Wear slip-on shoes, because you will be asked to remove them, along with anything metal (belt, coins, watch, etc.) for screening. If they call you out of line for further inspection, don't sweat it, I've been 'reviewed' several times and no problems.
4. If you have to change planes between your starting point and destination, check the airline magazine since they usually have maps of their hub cities and many airlines will announce their connecting gates before the airplane lands. If not, someone from the airline can help you if you are confused. And doublecheck; airlines will change gates on you.
5. Las Vegas is a BIG airport and constantly busy. Follow the signs to baggage claim and look for the carousel with your flight number displayed. Once you have your bags, you have two choices to get to the hotel (1) Cab, which will run you about $15-20, or bus, which is only about $7, but stops at a number of hotels and can take upwards of an hour to get you to your hotel.
6. If you want to, either add your arrival time/airline to the thread I have, or if you want to PM me the schedule I'll offer whatever other advice I can.
Looking forward to meeting you at TAM5; and trust me, you'll be fine.

I do this on international flights. A clean shirt and undies, my contact lenses and glasses, my meds (if I have them). Almost anything else, I can live without for a day or two.
ETA: Hutch, at DFW they put the barcode tags for the luggage on right there at the curb and give you the receipts for the checked luggage. Is that not the case everywhere? I always pre-print my boarding passes.

That is true, GG, but if Remie is an inexperienced traveller, I think it is best to get everything done at the desk inside with a ticket agent. Like you, I print my boarding passes out at home and (if available) use the computer check-ins for baggage, but we're old pros at this, and RemieV is just starting out, so not to many new things.

When flying, it is a question of travelling light, while still carrying the essentials.
On your person, at all times
Passport
Ticket
Coins (for payphones, tips)
Cash (not too much)
Credit card
Napkins/tissues (think "No toiletpaper?? I find out now?")
Carry in a purse around your neck, inside your clothes.
Carry-on bag
Clothes for next day (think "lost luggage")
Toiletries
Carry-on bag, small enough to hang by your airline seat
Book
Address book
Pen & paper
Chocolate/candy (energy)
MP3-player (+ enough batteries!)
Painkillers
Peptobismol (tablets)
Small plastic bag for garbage (and if you get sick!)
Earplugs
Sleeping mask
Comb
Camera
Cellphone (but turn it off when boarding!)
Map of airports you are visiting. Sometimes available online.
When flying
Wear very comfortable clothes.
Go to the bathroom before you board. You could be stuck for hours inside the plane, before it takes off.
Put the small carry-on inside the big one, before you board. Take it out before you stow the big one away.
Don't wait until the last minute to board. You'll find it harder to stow away your big carry-on. Stow it, so you can easily get it out.
If you stow your coat, put the coat in a plastic bag. It will protect the coat, and make it easier to get hold of.
Check where the emergency exits are. All of them.
When you have found your seat, take off your shoes and tie them to your seat.
Get an extra blanket.
If you are blase about looking out the window, get an aisle seat: Better leg room, easier bathroom access.
Get up and stretch once an hour.
Go to the bathroom when you can, not when you desperately have to. That's when the line will be the longest. The line will also be long, shortly before the plane lands.
Don't wear perfume, but shower as close to departure as possible. Use a neutral deodorant.
When everyone else jumps out of their seats after landing, take your time and put your shoes on again. Double-check to see if you haven't forgotten anything. Don't keep things lying around; when you don't need something, put it back in the carry-on again.
Leave trash as neatly as possible.
Suitcase
Mark your suitcase with something you can see from far away. Mark it on as many sides as possible. Stickers, colourful luggage belts, but nothing that can be torn off.
Address labels should be taped to the suitcase. Leave your address on a piece of paper in the suitcase, too.
Don't travel with fancy suitcases. Get something that can take a beating.
Don't lock the suitcase.
If you bring something that can break, put it in the center of the suitcase, and use socks and sweaters to protect it. Do this especially if your suitcase isn't hardcover.
Take photos of the contents of the suitcase, for insurance purposes.
Pack at least 24 hours before you leave. Don't wait until right before you leave to pack the "last".
Hotel
Don't bring whole bottles of shampoo/body lotion/etc. Fill up tiny bottles. Take the shampoo containers you get at hotels with you for later use. Get them for your friends, too.
There is usually a bucket for ice, and free ice. You can make your own "fridge" overnight, by filling up the sink with ice (put the plug in first).
Locate the nearest drugstore. Get some sodas, crackers etc., if you get the munchies.
Lock your suitcase when you leave the room. Use the safe, if there is one.

Coins? For tips? Tightwad.
I want to get rid of the coins.
And you want to carry lots of cashs. Pulling a big wad of cash out of your pocket will impress fellow travellers.
Perhaps. But I'd rather appear poor and live.
Mr. Spontaneity. Are you afraid to live life on the edge or something?
When I travel, it is quite often for many, many hours. E.g., it takes me anywhere from 18-26 hours to get to TAM.

My practical International flying tips (some are potentially abraisive) that work for me:
1) When flying and you are gaining hours (Dubai - London for example) try to sleep on the plane. When flying and losing hours (Vancouver - New York) try to stay awake and arrive tired, but go to bed at a 'normal' time in the new time zone.
2) If you are on a sleeping flight, having 2 cocktails in the departure lounge pretty much guarantees you'll be out like a light as the plane is taking off. (It does me, anyways.)
3) Fly business on long haul flights - especially if you aren't paying for the ticket.
4) If there is a child seated within one row of you on the flight who appears to be under the age of seven, or in the first five minutes of boarding reveals itself to be whiny / snivelly / annoying, ask to be reseated before takeoff. The squeakiest wheel gets the grease here, folks.
5) Earplugs are a travel necessity.
6) The only place you can wear 'Ruben Kincaid' nightshades without being laughed at is on a plane. Take advantage of the opportunity.
7) Avoid the fish dining option, and usually any airline breakfast will be more disgusting than other airline food.
8) Airline food on small, obscure, regional airlines tends to be worse than... well... the buffet at the Stardust for starters.
9) Arrive early to airports, particularly for international flights. You don't want to have to be rushed unnecessarily.
10) Carry US $1 bills (at least 10) for tips / getting rid of annoying people in foreign airports.
11) Bulkhead seats in coach can offer more legroom, but the kid quotient is higher because airliines often put babies in those rows with the fold-out bassinets. Exit rows are good, but on 747's they may also be aligned with the galleys, so can be noisy from stewards/esses rattling around / chatting in there. If stuck in coach, I tend to prefer a window seat and huddle up in a corner making it clear I do not wish to interact with any humans. Second best is an aisle, however I tend to always get bumped and woken up. The back one or two rows can be a good hit - especially if there are any empty seats. Asking to get a row with an empty seat in the middle is great, getting an empty row to yourself is better. If this happens, make sure you take posession of the entire row by spreading out your things as soon as the plane takes off or you may lose it to a 'seat hopper'.

My friend Pat who constantly travels international flights and hates to share a row with anything breathing, tells me she does the following:
When you sit down, get the barf bag and open it up in the 'ready' position. She said turning green helps, but that's hard for most people to pull off. She said she also once stuck a long piece of dental floss in her teeth and let it hang down, and no one would sit near her.

Yes. Each container must be a 3-oz size or less. Everything you carry on must fit into a sigle oe-quart clear ziplock bag, which limits the total amount. You can check whatever you need. As regards laundry stuff, most laundromats sell small containers that are good for one or two loads of laundry.

Man, that sucks. My toothpaste passes, as does the shaving cream from a travelling kit, both at 75ml (I don't like the smell of the aftershave that comes with it though). That's it.
Most other items come in 100ml (3.4oz) or 150ml (5oz) sizes. This means lots of shopping around, right after New Year, for the right size of bottles :(

Remie, if you are flying out of Dallas-Ft. Worth, a couple of points; get there a minimum of 2 hours before your flight, more if you can manage it. Dallas is a mega-airport and the lines at the counter and the security checkpoints are going to be long. Also, the DFW complex has 5 remote terminals that are not connected and you have to take a shuttle train to get to. If someone is dropping you off, you might want to call the airline the day before you go and find out which of the terminals you will be leaving from and ask any other questions you may have. Here is the DFW site. http://www.dfwairport.com/index.html
As for the boarding passes, I am guessing that you are leaving via American Airlines (about 80% of the flights there are American Airlines, so not much of a guess). If you have aprintout from Orbitz with your flight schedule, it probably has a Booking ID or Reservation Number, which is a 6-digit code used to identify reservations. If you take that to the American Airlines (or whatever airline you are flying) website (www.aa.com) and follow the menu, you should be able to print out your boarding passes about 24 hours before you leave. I've done it several times.
I can't wait to meet all of you :) You look like good peoples.

Yeah, but it won't smell the same as the products I use at home. And there may be things I'm allergic to (I've had a rash twice before which I think was caused by using another laundry detergent than usual).

Regarding this line in your signature..
I'm assuming the following lines are "to drop down dead" ? :)
No, I think it was something sexual, but I don't remember!

Yeah, but it won't smell the same as the products I use at home. And there may be things I'm allergic to (I've had a rash twice before which I think was caused by using another laundry detergent than usual).
I also want my shirts and such to smell like mine, not like someone else's. Maybe I'm just weird that way.
Yeah, life is hard.
You can still have whatever you want in your checked luggage, you realize?
(Okay, not whatever you want, but the liquid restrictions don't apply.)

Yeah, I guess a lot of stuff will end up in my suitcase instead. I just hope they don't lose it this time though ...

When you sit down, get the barf bag and open it up in the 'ready' position. She said turning green helps, but that's hard for most people to pull off. She said she also once stuck a long piece of dental floss in her teeth and let it hang down, and no one would sit near her.
I've never done this on a plane, but I do it in the movie theatre all the time.

Hey, I've at least flown in helicopters on various occasions. And have enough guns that I would have had to register as "maintaining an arsenal" under Clinton's proposed gun legislation.

Well, 'maintaining an arsenal" - doesn't that really mean an awful lot of work? The oiling and cleaning, the assembling and disassembling blindfolded in 3 seconds flat, as well as trying to keep the right ammo with the right clip with the right weapon. That's kinda why, the Ex is an Ex - I broke a nail trying to keep up with that stuff (mind you that was from picking up a Jane's to ask - was that gun in Equilibrium real?)
I should have said I like the IDEA of men in leather with guns in movies.

What the heck.
This is me at a pro-free speech rally in San Francisco. Note that the Danish flag I'm holding is NOT on fire.

Troylus, Very sorry to hear that your wife won't be at TAM this year. But I'll still say "hi".

... I've never travelled alone before...
Of course, you won't be alone anymore (I'm on the same flight from Dallas to Vegas, so once she's past security she'll be ok, as long as nothing weird happens between Austin and Dallas).
I'm not always smushed like my avatar, but otherwise that's me.
