:) No matter what the doctrine, they're just never able to practice what they preach, are they? The disagreement? They're fighting over how they should treat members of another religion. Now if THAT isn't proof of spiritual guidance, I don't know what is . . .
7 injured as monks storm monastery
POSTED: 9:10 a.m. EST, December 20, 2006
THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) -- Two groups of monks clashed on Wednesday at a monastery facility in Mt. Athos, resulting in at least seven injuries, police said.
Fighting broke out between a group of rebel monks occupying facilities of the 1,000-year-old monastery of Esphigmenou, and a group of legally recognized monks on the outside.
The rebel monks, unrecognized by the Orthodox Church, reacted strongly when the outsiders attempted to force their way into the monastery's representative offices in Karyes, the administrative center of the medieval community. They were trying to enter in order to begin construction of a new building.
The clashes turned violent as the occupying monks attacked the intruders with crowbars and fire extinguishers, breaking a door down.
Seven monks were reported injured. Four were taken off the peninsula by boat and hospitalized at Polygiros, including two with head wounds, while three more were being taken to hospital, according to Athos police.
Esphigmenou monastery -- one of 20 in the all-male medieval community in northern Greece -- has been the scene of a long-running dispute between Orthodox Church authorities and rebel monks at Esphigmenou, who bitterly oppose efforts to improve relations between the Orthodox Church and the Vatican.

But... but... Prince of peace... and all that... Know Jesus, know peace...
How can this be????
It's almost as if religion generates strife... Nah, couldn't be! :boggled:

The Greeks must not have gotten the memo: This year we hate the Muslims, but do NOT draw cartoons of them. ;)

Rebel Monks eh? Why do I picture guys with tonsures, dressed in camo, carrying guns, with bandoliers of bullets strung over both shoulders? :D

Well, if Doctor Who can have monks doing battle (Tooth & Claw) in Queen Victoria's time then why not now ;)

My parents recently moved, and while moving them I found an original Monkey's script. It's so bad that it's funny.

I remember one fighting monk. "Ah grasshopper, snatch the pebble from my hand." :D

That's great - it could be worth something.
Some of the plots for most of their episodes were utterly hilarious and usually not for the reasons intended. Did you ever see their full-length movie, Head? :)

Keye Luke or David "Kill Bill" Carradine? I've liked them both for years, although Carradine was looking like Mel Torme for awhile there. :)

I liked him best although Bruce Lee would have been better. :)
Keye Luke was the blind Shaolin monk in the original series.

Didn't the new series also have David Carradine in it? I remember seeing the uncomfortable mixture of his character with the flute walking around modern times - I never watched it either. :)

Your avatar sadly reminds me of Peter Boyle who passed away last week. I don't think there was mention of it in the forums, but apparently he'd been ill for awhile.

Yes. I only saw bits and pieces of the new show (in reruns I think). From what I saw, I believe Carradine was the father of the cop guy that did most the acting.
I loved the original show.
Back when it first hit the air waves I was taking Karate classes. Our school ran an ad on the local station carrying it, during the show.
There is also an ironic story related to the show. I won't cause a derail by giving the full story, but the ending was that two bad guys went down, a third ran away, and my instructor was the hero (story was told by a third person that had no idea I knew my instructor ;)
ETA: I think Carradine was also the great(?) grandson of his earlier role's character. Or something :)

The Kung Fu TV series and Bruce Lee's movies were probably responsible for boosting the martial-arts craze of the 70s. I thought it was great because it was a mass introduction to Asian philosophies.
I was working in a local emergency room once long ago and three guys came in pretty banged up; one had a broken knee and broken ribs, the second had a broken elbow and a dislocated shoulder and the third's nose was laid flat against his right cheek. There was a police officer there investigating an earlier accident and he recognized the three guys as serious trouble-makers. When he questioned them regarding their "assault" they laughingly said, "this guy jumped us."
The guy in question called the police shortly after to report an attempted robbery outside his Karate school. This happened in the mid 70s in southern NM, but I'm sure there are criminals stupid enough all over the U.S. to try a strongarm robbery outside a dojo. :)

I didn't realize that - he was honestly one of my favorite actors. He'll be sorely missed. I'm going to have to go back and watch Young Frankenstein and Where the Buffalo Roam again. :)
As your attorney, I advise you to keep laughing . . .

Well come on now. How did they get this? Is it just a Xerox or actually something they got from the '60's because your mom did the hair of one of the writers when he was in town for an oboe convention? Just what would you tell if you presented it on "Antiques Roadshow"?

Given that my parents grew up in Orange County, I suspect that one of them could have actually gotten it through somewhat natural means.
And no, it is not a xerox. It's hand typed. Complete with typos.
