View Full Version : A great Atheist is Dead...

Katherine Hepburn is known as a great actresss, but she was also an outspoken atheist! She once said she felt death was like going to sleep, but not waking up. She had a lot of courage to be so open with her beliefs.

So, here's to you Katherine!

"From being into nothingness!"

cheers!

Oh, Phyllis Diller doesn't believe in an after life either!

She had a near death experience, and said she has proof now, that there's nothing...

kitty,I am curious:

Where is Katherine's soul then right now if there is no Heaven?

She is either a Spirit or Ghost or in Heaven or Hell

What soul? What evidence do you have that we are anything more than flesh and bone?

That'd be a false dilemma (http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/false-dilemma.html), billie. Can you think of no other options?

I've adored Katharine Hepburn all my life. I can watch Lion in Winter for ever (I was once part of a band called Sack the Vatican). I have Barbara Leaming's biography and she has always been on my "perfect dinner party" list. Immortal.

Can ghosts be classified as souls? If they are, why aren't they in Heaven or Hell (or where ever else they're supposed to be)? Why didn't they 'Move On'? If they're not, then what exactly are they?

A great atheist dead? You mean a great actress that was an atheist. She didn't do anything to advance the atheist movement. Most people didn't even know she was an atheist. I loved her in Look Who's Coming to Dinner. Great movie! :)

As soon as I read this I was reminded of a line from Red Dwarf, where Kryten says:

"No Silicon Heaven? Don't be absurd, sir. Where would all the litle calculators go?"

Actually, I'm not an atheist, though I'm not sure if there is an afterlife. Guess we'll all have to wait and see, meanwhile I'm enjoying the ride.

But, I admired her so much, just for her films and the way she lived her life. Maybe because she didn't believe in an after life, she made life choices based on the thought, "this is it, so I'd better get it right."

Or maybe….Just maybe……..If there is a god, it may not care if you believe in it at all.

Can you think of why your belief makes a difference to an immortal and all-powerful being?

Such a god could choose to evaluate us on how we live our lives and the way we treated the world around us regardless of our belief. This would be a god that bases its decisions on compassion for inferior creatures instead of vindictive jealousy.

I'm always a bit disappointed when someone posts what I was thinking, and almost to the word no less.

But wasn't it Guess Who's Coming to Dinner *scratches head*

Nyarlathotep,

KRYTEN: Oh, it's not the end for me, sir, it's just the beginning. I have served my human masters, now I can look forward to my reward in silicon heaven.
LISTER: (Stunned pause.) Silicon _what_?
KRYTEN: Surely you've heard of silicon heaven?
LISTER: Has it got anything to do with being stuck opposite Bridgette Nielson in a packed lift?
KRYTEN: It's the electronic afterlife! It's the gathering place for the souls of all electonic equipment. Robots, calculators, toasters, hairdryers -- it's our final resting place.
LISTER: I don't mean to say anything out of place here, Kryten, but that is completely whacko, Jacko. There is no such thing as "silicon heaven."
KRYTEN: Then where do all the calculators go?
LISTER: They don't go anywhere! They just die.
KRYTEN: Surely you believe that god is in all things? Aren't you a pantheist?
LISTER: Yeah, but I just don't think it applies to kitchen utensils. I'm not a _frying_ pantheist! Machines do not have souls. Computers and calculators do not have an afterlife. You don't get hairdryers with tiny little wings, sitting on clouds and playing harps!
KRYTEN: But of course you do! For is it not written in the Electronic Bible, "The iron shall lie down with the lamp?" Well, it's common sense, sir. If there were no afterlife to look forward to, why on Earth would machines spend the whole of their lifes serving mankind? Now that would be really dumb!
LISTER: (Quietly) That makes sense. Yeah. Silicon heaven.
KRYTEN: Don't be sad, Mr David. I am going to a far, far better place.
LISTER: Just out of interest: Is silicon heaven the same place as human heaven?
KRYTEN: Human heaven? Goodness me! Humans don't go to heaven! No, someone made that up to prevent you all from going nuts!
The last bit in bold was my sig for a while....

I didn't realize Hepburn was an atheist. I guess I still have a mental image of her as the missionary in The African Queen.

I wonder how often the subject of religion came up in Hepburn's relationship with her "soulmate" Spencer Tracy, a devout Catholic, and if Hepburn ever blamed religion for Tracy's refusal to divorce his wife.

I disagree with that attitude. The fact is, there will be no seeing if you wait since seeing with a rotting occipital lobe is impossible. Determine whether or not there is an afterlife before you die or never at all.:)

Thanks, Loki, I was quoting from memory and I haven't seen that particualr episode in a while.

Billiefans attitude still strikes me as absurd as Krytens. Of course Kryten is a character on a comedy show, I don't know what Billiefan's excuse is.

I don't know if it was because of his personal beliefs or out of respect for his wife and for tradition. I'd also like to know.

There is no soul - Billiefan. There is no Heaven. There is no Hell. You "cease" to exist when you die. Good heavens, how old are you? Does your mother know you visit these sites?

And do the papers come out and say she was an atheist? No. They say she came from a free-thinking family. That's secret talk for agnostic/atheist.

It is not for us to provide evidence to you but the other way around. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Atheists make no claims. Theists and believers in mystical crap do! There has never been one shred of verifiable evidence to prove the existence of anything mystical or godlike yet generation after generation of the almighty brainwashed fall lock step behind all this crap.

I’m not making a claim; I’m just saying that no one will know for sure until they die. Death is a personal and subjective experience; I don’t think science can definitively tell us what we will experience during or after death.

The best thing about anyone who has certain beliefs, is their capacity for tolerance & restraint in how they deal with others who might not share them. I'm not saying they should always keep silent about what they feel, but they should have a bit of decorum in expressing them. Just because someone might not share them is no reason to try & cram it down their throats.
I've only found out about her atheism about three years ago; before that, I had no idea. It was nice to see someone who was famous keeping their beliefs to themselves, and not making a cause out of it.

Well, I just don't see Katharine right now saying, "Wow Spence, they let you drink all you want here huh?"

And wouldn't she throw a FIT to find out her favorite relative (brother or cousin...sorry don't remember exactly) who commited suicide wasn't allowed in!

Brain functions cease when you die. The body shuts down and starts deteriorating. However, I assume you believe there is this thing - 'soul' - that is released joyously into the air at the moment of death. You sprout some wings and start wanging on a harp. Is this close? I don't believe this.

As for Heaven - Only someone who is ignorant (most people) or an idiot would believe there is a city waiting for us when we die - and everything will be great! Everybody's waiting for us there.

As for Hell - It is a late addition to the above mythology. It is used to scare people into believing. Once again belief is by ignorance or idiocy.

This is the prevalent bigotry I have encountered here. If I have an open mind and think critically of things in which atheists have invested beliefs, I am assumed to be a bible thumping fundamentalist. The truth is, I don’t know, and I suspend judgment, I guess you could say I’m an agnostic. To me it isnt about belief, it is about knowing or not knowing.

Sorry. I just said I don't believe in Heaven, Hell, God, Satan, Jesus, the whole kit-and-kaboodle. You seemed to take offense to that, so I just assumed you were insane. My apologies.

The truth is, I don’t know, and I suspend judgment, I guess you could say I’m an agnostic.

Bravo! That is the absolute minimum spiritual reality we know for sure: nothing. I was agnostic, before I became an atheist. Once you study other religions and mythologies, the "I don't know" light gets brighter and brighter, until you finally realize "Religion" milks peoples' minds. It is a virus. Religion is to mankind as a piranha is to a corndog. Don't be a corndog, Tony. :)
