I have just been sent a link from a known woo source to a very iffy looking new movie called "The Secret" that's promising to deliver "A New Era for Mankind" (lucky us!).

I can't seem to find much information about it on Google, except for the movies own sales blurb/propaganda. It's apparently based upon a theory of a "Law of Attraction" and seems to be another "What the Bleep" type affair mis-representing quantum theory, etc.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Does anyone know anything about this to enable my response?

Seems this exact same post (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?postid=2222831#post2222831) appears in the Religion and Philosophy section. Everyone here is missing half the conversation, and vice versa. ;)

I would happily jump on Lisa, but she is a moderator and I don't want her to punish me. Well, okay, maybe a little B&D, but nothing that would cause my posting ability to be circum... erm... circumvented.

Many of these people talking are titled "philosopher"s.

Give me a break. Most philosophers are secular. It would do good to have the public know that.

I added this comment to the youtube video:

I have a secret for you guys here... shh... don't tell anyone...

ALMOST EVERY MODERN PHILOSOPHER IS AN ATHEIST OR AN AGNOSTIC

I watched it, I liked it. I remember paul mckenna briefly noted something like the law of attraction in one of his books. Athought its new agey but they try to mix quantum physics into it with one persons account I remember, which really annoyed me. They should call people who talk like that quantum mystics instead. This video is what people believe, not fact that is proven which is what it is being put forward as. Its a feel good movie I guess if you like this kind of thing.

Yeah,

Most people would pay good money to be told there was a simple technique that would enable you to have everything you desire and be anything you want to be, and that with loads of money!

When God has failed to give you what you want in life, believe in your own divine power. A new age, a new scam.

A little bit da Vinci code, a little bit of Celestine Prophesy. The thing I don't like about New Age is that it often takes itself too seriously.

A tender yet powerful intergenerational love scene between Anne Hathaway and, oh, let's say Sela Ward?

From the Wikipedia site:

As put forth in the film, The "Law of Attraction" principle posits that our feelings and thoughts affect real events in the world, from the workings of the entire cosmos, to interactions among individuals in their physical, emotional, and professional affairs. The film also suggests that there was a conspiracy to keep this central principle hidden from the public. The previews or "clues" to the film show Charles F. Haanel having "uncovered The Secret... Like the great men before him...", and his book, The Master Key System focuses heavily on this concept which is one of the book's key themes. On the DVD commentary section, Rhonda Byrne, creator, explains that she got inspired to create The Secret after reading the 1910 classic The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles.

Emphasis mine. I wonder if there is some sly trolling going on on the Wikipedia page. If so, well done lads! If not, Jeebus H. Christ, lady!

Looks like the similar vapid nonsense put forth in What the Bleep Do We Know?

These people just don't give up.

If it takes itself seriously at all, it automatically takes itself too seriously. :)
