It takes a lot to surprise me these days. :(

Didn't realize that everyone who gets money from the BUsh Administration is Bush's 'best friend'.

From the same story:
These latest incidents of serious human rights violations could complicate Uzbekistan's relations with the United States. The United States has allied itself closely with Uzbekistan in the war against terrorism, but U.S. government officials have expressed concern that Uzbekistan's harsh treatment of independent Muslims could be counterproductive to the anti-terror effort. The U.S. government recently adopted a law requiring that before delivering aid to the Uzbek government, the Bush administration must determine that Uzbekistan is making "substantial and continuing progress" in meeting the human rights commitments contained in a U.S.-Uzbekistan March 2002 joint declaration.

We have our own problems here in the US.
Reports of torture devices in prison largely come from the isolation units, called "control units." Torture devices commonly used in U.S. prisons are four-point restraints, restraint hoods, belts and beds, stun grenades, belts and guns, tethers, waist and leg chains and air Tasers.
Add to this the U.N. treaty positions on the racially biased death penalty, abuses involving the mentally ill, prison labor, children's rights and the shocking treatment of people in Immigration and Naturalization Service detention centers.
U.S. prison practices place it in the company of China and other nations the United States has justifiably criticized over the years for human rights violations.

Imagine that!
Restraints and non-lethal weapons being used in prisons across the United States...
Next you'll be telling me that they keep the inmates in locked cells!!!

I know, it sounds pretty tame compared to boiling someone in water.
One of my friends was nearly beaten to death in her local county lock-up 2 weeks ago. The FBI has been called in because there have been more than one beating at this jail that has resulted in death.
This is not the only person I know to be tortured and beaten in US jail. The stories of rape and torture and death in prison are numerous.

Abuses do occur, but they are not part of the US Justice Services or the Dept. of Corrections standard operating procedures. The same cannot be said of other countries.

But the difference is that those incidents are not official policy, they are perpetrated by rouge guards and/or corrupt prison officials.

I question the validity of the source.

This web site is
An independent media source.
One person's effort to correct the distorted perceptions provided by commercial media.
This web site is non-commercial (no advertising no pop-up windows) and funded by readers contributions.
This web site grew out of my personal frustration and anger at the failure of traditional commercial media to inform the American public, especially as it relates to US foreign policy.
A source of unreported (or under reported) news from around the globe.
An effort to provide more depth and understanding to current issues.
This web site is the work of one person.
I am a private individual.
I am not affiliated with any particular political party.
I am not funded by any group.
I pay for all services associated with this site from my personal funds and readers' donations.
I am not independently wealthy.
I work and live in Southern California.
... ONE person's effort, for a media source reporting worldwide news?

I agree....
What I find funny... From the looks of it, this guy was against the war in Iraq.
The motto of the site is something like "The stuff CNN won't tell you". Yet CNN got into trouble when it was found out they were supressing news about how bad Saddam was just to be allowed to continue operating in Iraq.

Hmmm...
I somehow remember the UN honoring a great human rights leader named Idi Amin in the 1970s who did eat his own people.
;)
I really don't understand, there are all kinds of f===ed up leaders in the world, what should the US or EU do about them?
attack them?
not trade with them?
I mean really?

I would like to see the author of this thread answer some of the questions being raised here or is hit and run a new debate tool?

A fine article originally published in the New York Times Sunday Magazine and found on this same website was ignored by all here recently.
