And even worse, the tax money isn't going into Shawinnigan.

Seriously... I know the Montreal olympics went severely into debt, but how did Calgary do? Any chance these olympics could break even?

And is this the consolation prize for not getting the Summer Olympics for Toronto?

Needing 54 first-ballot votes to win, Pyeongchang received 51, while Vancouver received only 40. Salzburg, billed as a co-favourite with Vancouver, was surprisingly eliminated after receiving 16 votes.

On the second ballot, Vancouver tallied 56 votes, while Pyeongchang got 53

Where did the two extra votes come from on the second ballot?

Yes. Toronto got screwed by the head of the IOC wanting Beijing olympics as his legacy, and I think that other members felt bad about it.

But maybe I'm just bitter.... It will be at least 30 years before Toronto gets another shot.

"Legacy" implies the guy is leaving. From what I understand, the head of the IOC (Samarrach?) had some lackey of his put in as the new head, and had himself installed as some sort of "advisor for life". (Just repeating what I heard a long time ago; sorry, no links or anything, so my memory could be fuzzy.)

Not that I really care. 99% of the olympics is pointless.

Apparently Calgary did pretty well financially. At least this is what I've continually heard leading up to this decision.

I was under the impression that only LA has ever made money by hosting the olympics. I don't know why cities compete to host them. Without an already large an intact infrastructure, (like LA!) the city would lose loads of money building for it.

Calgary got a lot of great training facilities out of it. Having another winter olympics may not be as productive as the national teams in many winter sports already train in the Calgary olympic facilities as I understand it.

Can we return the Olympic Games? :D

I think that the Olympic Games in Atlanta were the most profitable ones.
