I just saw the Challenge mentioned over at Wired (http://www.wired.com/news/technology/1,72482-0.html). Nice little write-up - with a couple of pictures from Achau Nguyen's attempt.

Thanks ORM. Very interesting.

A quote from the article-

"Edward didn't respond to an e-mail query for this story; Browne didn't return a phone call, and neither responded to several minutes of intense concentration."

Very funny.

Hmm...we have a new forum member who's username is the same as the author of that article.

When I first heard about the change to the Challenge, I was reticent. But after thinking about it, and reading what Jeff and The Amazing said in the article, it sounds like the Challenge will have a little more "legitimacy". Instead of being open to any (for lack of a better word) crackpot, it will now be open to people with a "proven history". With the Challenge completely open, it seems (at least by reading the posts by Kramer/Jeff) a LOT of time is wasted going over the same ground - What do you do? How will you demonstrate it? Don't waste our time with theories. Etc.

I also like the idea of the JREF "going after" people.

From the caption of Randi's picture in the article:

"Not surprisingly, high-profile TV psychics won't touch the ($1M challenge) offer with a ten-foot dowsing rod."

I've sent an appreciative email to Kevin Poulsen. His sort of reporting should be encouraged, IMO.

Man, I'm inclined to subscribe to Wired just for that jab alone.

Brilliant! By coincidence I was trying to remember the title of that episode only yesterday.

I like the new Challenge. I've always been uncomfortable with so many obviously mentally-ill people taking up most of the time.

I can't wait until these frauds try to say to the public at large (in the NY Times?) that the money doesn't exist or whatever. Anyone know if legal action can be taken in that event?

I don't know about legal action, but they can be publicly fact-checked to death if it stays in the public spotlight long enough. Soon it'll be time for skeptics to unapologetically state their case. Tell your friends, write letters to the editor of your local paper, anything to get the word out. As far as us skeptical folk are concerned, Randi's preaching to the choir. It's time for the choir to get a little louder, to make it obvious that he's not the only one who's tired of this nonsense.
