You keep mentioning sociological data. Would you consider suicide rates, for example, as "sociological data"? For example, if Region A of the world has a significantly higher suicide rate than region B, wouldn't it "prove" that people living in Region A are more unhappy and more prone to commit violence on themselves?

I'll answer my own question: No, it doesn't. A lot of different factors are responsible for suicide rates, and all need to be carefully considered before making any sweeping generalizations about a particular population or society. The same is true for any type of "sociological data" you can cite. Sure, you can pick and choose and find what you want to support your own prejudices and bolster your own sense of self-worth. But the world is a lot more subtle and complex than can be captured in any data set.

Frankly, I think your views on Americans are very unsophisticated and simplistic, and wholly unworthy of -- indeed insulting to -- the presumedly superior society in which they formed.

While it is true that the US is somewhat more "violent," that alone does not explain why the prison population is so high. I think you will find that a large part of the reason is that crime is punished harder there. Even insignificant crimes carry sentences that may seem unreasonable to us foreigners who are used to having even murderers back on the streets after only 5-10 years.

European (and certainly Scandinavian) courts (a big generalization, I know) on the other hand, tend to be a lot more lenient. Infact, certain crimes that are punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty in the United States will only get you 2-3 years in Scandinavia.

Now I'm not looking for three-strike laws for petty theft or anything similiarily absurd, but it certainly wouldn't hurt if we raised the minimum sentences for serious crimes to a similar level as the Americans. I mean, at present even the life sentence (which is almost never used) is legally defined as "a maximum of 21 years*" here in Norway, with parole common after serving only half or two-thirds of the sentence.


(*The law does allow for an open-ended sentence for criminals that pose an extreme danger to society. It is technically not a life sentence as it is reviewed at regular intervals to determine if the risk is still present or if the person can safely be re-integrated into society or mental care.)

It´s their traditional name. That´s all. They don´t use to preach
anything religious in public like a priest in church. And that for the

neutrality in terms of religon as much as possible in a multicultural
society.

A traditional thing and nobody cared about it until someone was
pissed because of it. However, this is the actual law:

1. Die Anbringung eines Kreuzes oder Kruzifixes in den Unterrichtsräumen einer staatlichen Pflichtschule, die keine Bekenntnisschule ist, verstößt gegen Art. 4 Abs. 1 GG.

In short: It´s not allowed to use crucifixes within a public school
except religious funded/managed schools.
