My favorite magic photo of all time

If you check out my blog on TAM at skepchick.org I talk about Kitten2 walking up to Todd Robbins and saying to him, "Why are you holding those dice?" He replied, "to do a magic trick for YOU."

And then he began to preform a great trick. She was so intense on it that she is biting her tongue in one photo. I was also intent on the trick and was slightly annoyed that someone was being very RUDE and peering over Kitten2's shoulder to see the trick. Then I noticed it was TELLER!!!

After the trick he went up to Todd and said, "with clear die, nice!"

Anyway, Teller is a true magician!

Awesome pics! Can you describe the trick? Not how he did it, just what he did. I'm very curious.

I wasn't there, but based entirely on the pics I'd say it was a classic trick where the magician shows one side of the die (say, the five-spot), pointing out that opposite sides always equal 7 and showing a two on the other side. He then goes on to talk about how this is a trick die, so he can actually make a one-spot appear on the other side of the five, or make it go back to two, etc. etc. The die can be fully examined.

I was told that Randi does this exact trick, but NOT with a clear pair of dice!

So it was pretty impressive. Except my daughter pointed out she is dyslexic, so the trick was REALLY impressive to her. Todd responded with, "well you know what they say, 'dyslexics of the world, untie!'"

Yeah, I know Teller talks. I saw their show here in Chicago about 7-8 years ago, they did a meet-and-greet during intermission and you could talk to them in the lobby. Nice guys. Maybe I'll be able to make it to TAM 26...

In a separate thread, SkepticScott mentioned that Todd has offered forum members a behind the scenes tour of his Coney Island sideshow digs, if we can coordinate it. Hoping this comes together. (I'm in NYC.)

From the description and photos, this looks like Dr. Sack's Dice Trick which was published in Bruce Elliott's Classic Secrets of Magic.

Recently, James Lewis, Bob Sheets and Daryl have all released their variations of it on video.
