Why can't you phone a US Post Office?

I tried to call a local Post Office to see if they were holding a package for me -- found out their phone number is not in the phone book. Called information -- couldn't get it that way either. Is this the norm? Don't they have a phone?

Yeah, that's the norm. The USPS doesn't want you to call individual post offices. They want you to call the central, national number: 1-800-USPS.

Individual post offices do have their own phone numbers, but in general these are not available to the public.

It was apparently in one of their trucks. They have a lot of trucks. These trucks do not have phones or GPS tracking devices. So, of course, it is impossible to know where specific packages are at any given moment -- they're just riding around, somewhere.

I have done it, and the guy at the other end of the phone was extremely nice and told me where my package was.

I should mention that this was AFTER the guy at the 800 number gave me incorrect info and gave me the number of the local post office to call. The nice man at the end of that telephone said "They always tell people we're their local post office when we're not. Your post office is at ___ and their local number is ____."

I had my friend OVERNIGHT me something critical (you know, those "Instant Express Delivery $14.40 Special Super-Duper Guaranteed" envelopes?) and 10 days later it was still circling the globe.

Yeah, they refunded his money, but had no explanation where it disappeared.
The envelope finally showed, with a shrug from the delivery guy.

A bit tangental: Ahh, we had a marvelous experience trying to get a hold of the post office with a problem. The new person on our route determined that our dogs, which were behind a seven foot fence, were "dangerous" and she refused to deliver our mail. To the box. Which was outside the fence. We'd had the dogs for over six years and one of the the fill in carriers used to throw dog biscuits over and say hi to them. But when we called the main number, the person actually said "Oh, I'm sure the other carriers were afraid of your dogs, too. If you want your mail, you'll have to go into your local post office and work it out.

So I carried in my two scary weiner dogs that lived behind our seven foot fence and straightened it out.

When my post office has a letter or package they can't leave, usually because it has to be signed for, they leave a printed notice to return specifying re-delivery information. It includes the phone number of the local post office where one could call to arrange re-delivery as well. There is a serial number on the slip left which presumably means the un-delivered item is logged into a computer program which tells the postal employee checking details and status of the delivery.

So local post offices do have phone numbers and they do accept calls from postal patrons (that's us). The next time you get one of those yellow slips or pink cards jot down the phone number of your local PO that's printed on it.

Man, I used to hate having to go to the post office. There were 7 work stations at the desk, but never more than 2 people working at any one time. The rest were in the back room doing who knows what. And each one was fatter than the next, when one would waddle off to the back room to go on "break" another one would come waddling out, wiping the flop sweat off her brow from the strenuous walk of 20 feet. All this while the line would be out the door and growing.

I'm so glad I rarely have to go to the PO any more!

I got my local post office phone number out of the phone book, but that was several years ago. I don't have a phone book with me at the moment, so I don't know if it's listed in this year's book , but I just Googled my post office and got the phone number.

I've never had trouble finding the number to my local post office. When I lived in Missouri, I found my post office in the phone book quite easily. When I moved to Tennessee, I used the USPS website to find the phone number since I didn't yet have a phone book. The only confusion for me was figuring out which of the 10 or 12 post offices is the one that services my address. I had no idea finding a post office phone number was considered difficult. I've also found that in most cases I don't really need a phone book, since a search in Google will turn up the place I'm wanting the number or address for.

I have done it, and the guy at the other end of the phone was extremely nice and told me where my package was.

I should mention that this was AFTER the guy at the 800 number gave me incorrect info and gave me the number of the local post office to call. The nice man at the end of that telephone said "They always tell people we're their local post office when we're not. Your post office is at ___ and their local number is ____."
