I'm not sure this is the correct subforum, but since "shure" is an active LCF-er and KT-pall, I'll post it here.

The challenge (http://www.shure.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=debate&action=display&thread=1171798594):

heres the deal if any of you can proof to me that 1 + 1 = 2 I will send you $100.00 CANADIAN cash in the mail and that is a promise !!!!!!!!!

If you can't proof it everyone that trys has to use the following banner at the JREF forum for a month !!!!

http://www.pumpitout.com/images/jref_banner.jpg

Go ahead and post your answers here!
If for any reason you don't think its fair.
I will try and meet you on agreed terms. Otherwise what are you scared of:( ?????

I corrected the link in the OP.

Note for shure: I also printed the challenge to a PDF-file. Just in case you loose the thread, of course. ;)

Proving 1+1=2, easy enough.

Whitehead and Russel in Principia Mathematica did that.

I posted it over there.

proof 1+1=2 ?

I think it's a fair challenge.

Bertrand Russell and Alfred Whitehead "proofed" it in their Principia Mathematica, but opened up a whole can of philosophical worms in so doing.

The following give a taste ..

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/principia-mathematica/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principia_Mathematica

(eta: oops T'ai Chi got in first. But to say they "proofed" it to everybody's satisfaction might be an overstatement.
The jury is till out on the whole 1+1 thing ;) )

The real question is: What is the point?
Is shure saying that CT's can't prove their stories because "the system" is "incomplete"?
If not: What is he saying?

Alright people can argue about anything if they want to. I decided to assume that Shure was just keen to give me money.

He never defined what HIS idea of the value and 1 and 2 are.

Unless he admits that 1=1 and 2=2, ((thus 1+1=2)) there is no point in trying to enter.

Edit, what we say 'doesn't prove anything'.

And never will in his mind :)

Having a six year old son, I can verify with near 100% certainty that "Shure" is either (i) a child, or (ii) has the mind of one.

His comment on the proof is very similar to the argument my two kids get into all the time...

"your a liar"

"No I'm not"

"Yes you are"

"No I'm not"

"you are"

"am not"

"are to"

Sad...don't they have an age limit over there.

Wait, I have no use for those silly Canadian dollerydoos in the US.

I collect Canadian postage stamps and purchase books from Canadian book dealers, so I'll take the cash.

One CTer plus one CTer makes up two CTers.

But when they announce the rally to the media, they say that 7,000 CTers showed up.

I want my money! :)

When the original looser was being created the creator told him "And now I will bestow you with IQ points"

And thus the looser spake, "I'm too smart for you to get away with spelling things in front of me! I don't want to be icky! I don't want any icky points!"

Verily, the creator replied, "But IQ stands for..."

Thus did the looser interrupt and say "I told you! I DON'T WANT ANY ICKY POINTS! AND NEITHER DO ANY OF MY FRIENDS!"

And so the creator said, "Oh, very well. From you and all who associate with you shall I remove all vestiges of IQ. From this day forth you will hang together in a lose group, and shall be known as 'loosers' by all."

And so it was done.

Shure has defined no rules for this challenge; specifically, what constitutes "proof." In his mind, all he has to do is declare every proof provided to him as unacceptable and he wins. Kind of like how most woos think the JREF challenge is run.

I could tell you that he is over ten years old, but then why would you believe me? I can't put an official "US government seal" on my allegations that he is well over ten years old. I think the point he is trying to make is that you people are grossly misinformed because all you will accept is government issued stories, and the word of the "GUV" is final and 100% correct. We on the otherside obviously think the US governments story is a cover up. So it takes 19 arabs and Osama Bin Laden to create a conspiracy to attack the USA. Ok if my math is correct ,19+1=20? Lets add in some operatives that hepled make it happen. Lets say 10. So 20+10=30? You say it would take 1000's of people in the USA government to pull this off, but you can easily accept that 30 or so muslims that you have been condidtioned to hate made it happen? Do you people go to bed at night with the comfort of believing that factions of the USA never intimidate people to keep their mouths shut? Please let me come live with you all in your perfect little worlds. The world you live in sounds like such an honest place.

The absurdity of attacking logic and regressing back to philosophical skepticism exposes the conspiracists as having a much bigger agenda than simply denying certain facts are true.

He's probably read somewhere that you cannot "prove" mathematical concepts because they are so-called "synthetic propositions". What he obviously can't figure out is why. So, he's just going to deny that you can do it- and then hope that a ridiculous Google-paste frenzy will save him, or that he can pretend that the burden of proof will endlessly fall on you to continue to satisfy him.

You cannot win if he is the decider of what reality is- nor should you. Reality is not what he decides. If he chooses to ignore reality, it's his own undoing. He cannot then turn around and claim that he has proof of a conspiracy because "there is no such thing" according to the logic he's trying to use. It infinitely regresses into a world where nothing can be true, and nothing can be false- which is absurd and nothing more than stupid philosophical masturbation. It's crap like this that gives philosophy a bad name. He wants you to use logic to prove that logic doesn't exist. And he refuses to answer to what his concepts are- his irreducible primaries. Without that- any attempt at discussion can be dodged by him flipping his meaning, context dropping, and changing his concepts on the fly.

I would avoid this challenge at all costs. It's too tempting to try, and you'll just end up banging your head against the wall.

So much wrong with this, I'm not sure where to start. (Not with Firestone, with thepye) Who here believes the word of the Government is final and 100% correct? Show of hands? Anyone? Didn't think so. The reason we accept a small number to perform the attack while declaring CTs require 1000s is because we accept that planes crashes and fires can cause buildings to collapse, while CTists claim that explosives were used and evidence planted. This requires many people and a lot of time. Have "factions of the USA" (whatever that means) ever intimidated people into silence? Sure, pending definition of these so-called factions. Does it always work? Absolutely not. The world we live in is called reality. Is it always honest? No, but sometimes it can be quite brutally honest. It is also a lot nicer place than paranoia.

If anyone wants to copy this response over there, feel free. I don't feel like registering for just one post.

(Seriously, WTF??? "Nope, that doesn't prove anything" is a legitimate response? What is this, an argument clinic?)

This gets into something we deal with at the Patent Office, when reading the claims of a patent application. They're quite often very involved, and it would be very easy to simply say, "I can't understand such a complex construction of words, therefore you shouldn't get a patent on it." However, the Courts have clearly ruled that a claim must be read by one with "a mind willing to understand" the claim.

That's what Shure fundamentally lacks. He is not willing to understand the proofs that have been presented, and so he continues to claim they are not "proof" that 1+1=2. It's a fundamentally dishonest stance, and as mentioned above, in the context of intellectual property, it's a stance that has been repeatedly rejected by the Courts. Canadian Courts, I should mention, since Shure is a fellow Canuck*.

So I say we sue his ass........In Canada!

Hey, a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks (http://board.barenaked.net/showpost.php?p=33940&postcount=99)!

*And don't think we aren't sorry about that. Almost as sorry as we are about Celine Dion. But more sorry than about Bryan Adams.
