If you are going to visit the Vatican, be advised that shorts and bare shoulders are not acceptable. Dress accordingly. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,6765431%255E1702,00.html

WITH temperatures soaring, tempers are flaring as the Vatican's dress police turn back tourists in shorts and bare shoulders trying to get into St Peter's Basilica.

Vendors are doing a brisk business selling paper pants and paper shirts - turning St Peter's Square into an open-air changing room.
...
At the Vatican, authorities have erected signs showing that no one can enter the basilica with bare legs and bare shoulders. Guards - neatly dressed in shirts and ties - patrol the entrances.
...
Not only the Vatican but the diocese of Rome and its hundreds of churches require what authorities consider appropriate dress.

But unlike the Vatican, most of the churches cannot afford guards and - in the heat of this summer - they have become cool refuges for the barely clad.

Actually, I am going to be visiting the Vatican (or Italy, more accurately) in the near future, so thanks for the tip!

BTW, does this apply to men as well as women?

Won't the sweat-soaked paper pants and shirts accentuate unsightly, demonic bulges?

BTW: Do not be confused by Club Vatican, which is in Montreal, not Vatican City. http://english.montrealplus.ca/profile/794845/?cr_survey=1

I find this to be good advice. One does not want to be too exposed with those crazed by celibacy. One could get raped. I advise not bending over either and yes, that goes for men and women.

And beware of incense burners - that's just a smoke screen.

They are very hot on this. I always take a pair of tracksuit bottoms with me and the glf takes a sarong when we're visiting churches in Italy.

GLF gas a degree in Art History, btw

Up until about 6 months ago, I had no interest in setting foot inside Vatican City, because of the stupidity involved. Now, after taking 2 semesters of Art History, I want to go see the works of Michelangelo, Raphael, etc...

Wow. What a neato rule. I've never thought of it before. Surely this will save Catholicism and make the world a better place.

I'm always impressed by the ultimate folly of it all
