The utter repudiation of the Republicans on the last cycle warms my heart. It is my intention, if a lot of things fall together, primarily family things first, and then the massive amount of money it costs, and all that, to try to run for Congress in 2008. But, you know, its a long shot. It's hard to see. It's a very conservative district, but I'm kind of a weird Democrat with a military background, and some other things that may be a little different. But, fundamentally, I'd like to.

He goes on to say Al Gore is his hero.
I'm actually a Wes Clarke guy, if Gore doesn't run. Essentially, whatever Democrat gets the nomination, I'll vote for. I had the privilege of talking with Ms. Clinton for, oh five or ten minutes on my own just once at an event, and came away completely, utterly charmed and delighted with her. I support her on most everything. Not everything. I think she's completely wrong on the war. But I would vote for her. But I do believe that she's unelectable, through no fault of her own. I've never understood the visceral hatred of the right wing for the CLintons. I disagree with most everything Mr. Reagan ever did, but I find him a likeable man who was doing what he thought was best for the country.
He made an interesting comment that Bill Clinton should have resigned for cheating on his wife.

If Hal can't get the drop on Montel, I'd suggest he get a better media adviser. The media is an immensely difficult factor in any campaign.

Is Hal saying here that it's wierd to have a Democrat with a military background? If so, he should stop spreading misinformation, especially the kind that's works against his own best interest. Quite a few Democratic veterans were newly elected to Congress in 2006, adding to the many already there.

I'm a huge Hal fan. I'd vote for him.
I have friends and family that have declared that they will never vote for a Democrat. I have friends and family that hate Hillary Clinton. I think both positions irrational. Myself, I've never voted for a Democrat. I was going to vote for Gary Hart but that didn't quite pan out. I'm currently campaigning for Obama.
I'm curious abut Hal saying that he won't be voting for a Republican. I wonder if he has made up his mind to never vote for a Republican or only if he isn't happy with the current choices?

Maybe Hal will become House Speaker some day and have the 97 percent of legislation that is non-mission related split off to another Forum.
That might not be a bad thing...

Yeah, I'll probably pull a Maria Shriver (or whomever the the Republican example would be) ;)

If Hal does run in the 5th District of Colorado, he will likely go up against Rep. Doug Lamborn-R, a freshman who recently began his first term.
Wikipedia reports that Lamborn "has a very conservative voting record and opposes gun control, abortion, stem cell research, and immigration."
Lamborn won the recent Nov. 7th 2006 election over Democrat Jay Fawcett with 59% of the vote. Fawcett received 41%, which WP says is a strong showing for the historically conservative district. The election was reportedly nasty, with Lamborn being cleared recently in a federal probe investigating whether his campaign was too close to independent groups running negative ads.
Fawcett, like Hal, is a retired USAF officer.

I think that Hal is great and would be a good representative in Congress, but in the 5th Judicial District a Democrat running for Congress is like a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. Unless the Republican gets convicted of sexual assault on a child, a democrat has no chance whatsoever, and maybe not even then.

in the 5th Judicial District
Rich, it's time you took a vacation from lawyerly pursuits. You're confusing judicial with congressional districts.
But now that you mention it, Hal does have a better shot at elected office in Breckenridge than he does in CoSprings. As a bonus, we can stay there on ski trips. ;)

It's not exactly running for Congress, but Hal is reportedly running a 7K with Elaine this weekend.

I have never donated to a campeign committe or candidate in my life, and never planned to as I feel that the money involved corrupts the process... but I would donate some if Hal were running.
Hell, I might actually watch more on C-SPAN than just Washington Journal. :)

Alas, patterns of speech are hard to beat--at least I got the number of the district correct, as El Paso is in the 4th Judicial District and the 5th congressional District.
If Hal is really serious, he needs to come up to the 7th and beat that nincompoop Pearlmutter in the Democratic party primary (No way he could beat DeJette in Denver in the primary, and no way that he can beat Tancredo in Jefferson County, he will never be liberal enough to take Udall's seat in Boulder, even if Udall runs for Allard's seat in the Senate. Yes, Hal needs to move to Aurora, Colorado. Aurora rocks!

I agree, though. District 7 would be an excellent district for someone like Hal to run in.

But then I didn't vote for Bush, ever.

If Hal wants to run for the Scottish Parliament, he has my vote.
Maybe Scotland can join the Union. It gets dull, moaning about Westminster all the time. If we had Washington to bitch about, we would be really happy.
Seriously, while I like and respect Hal, that's not necessarily the best reason to vote him into government, any more than it would be the best reason to give him Roadtoad's job, or Geek Goddess' or any other job that takes skill and experience.
It's odd, though, that there appear to be no actual qualifications required for most political jobs. Strange that we expect a plumber to meet strict professional standards, yet allow a total idiot to become a head of state.

Soapy, afaik, Hal has been teaching political science for many years and has had experience with public policies, including some time in the White House. It is likely he is more qualified than most Congressmen now. And, of course, there is a lot to be said about his honor and sincerity.
See, I'm already campaigning for him. :D

What experience did Arnold Schwartzenegger have? Or Ronald Reagan? Yet, they have both been governator of California.

Hang on, we are talking about the United States Congress. "Skill and Experience" are far, far, far down the list, unless you are talking about skill and experience in:
1. Lying.
2. Raising Money.
3. Lying.
4. Pandering to: labor unions (Democrats); religious fundamentalists (Republicans and Southern Democrats); trial lawyers (Primarily Democrats); idiots (both parties, equally).
5. Lying.
6. Prevarication.
7 Lying.
8. Speaking untruths.
9. Lying.
10. Talking out of both sides of your mouth.
11. Lying.
12. Making promises that you know you can never keep.
13. Lying.
14. Breaking the promises that you think that you can keep.
15. Lying.
16. Voting with your party no matter how stupid the party position is.
17. Lying
18. Infidelity in marriage.
19. Lying.

I hope Hal runs. I thought his interview was fantastic.
He is a fantastic public speaker, and a very good and very smart person.
I'm glad to have stumbled up this page, because I meant to offer how impressed I was with the interview right after it came out.

I'd vote for Hal. We could use more politicians with a sense of honor and integrity. Not to detract from Hal, but both Arnold and Ronald had extensive experience, though perhaps not as elected officials in high office (but who has that experience until they get elected?).
Arnold was an extremely successful businessman; he turned his earnings from bodybuilding and moviemaking into fortunes in real estate.
Ronald had been very politically active for a very long time and was neither an outsider to the workings of government nor an unknown to those in the party.

But I wouldn't vote for him. For me, the single most important issue of the upcoming election is the war and I wouldn't vote for anybody that doesn't favor some kind of scheduled phased withdrawal over the next year or so.

I took his opposition to Clinton's view on the war to mean that he was more in sync with the stay the course guys.
In the past I have been mostly a Republican voter but I now pretty much only vote for Democrats on the national level, because of the war and because of what I see as the spiral of the Republican party into anti-science, fiscal irresponsibility and its sell out to special interests. I would vote for almost any Democrat in the current environment over any Republican except a pro-war Democrat. I would listen with respect and interest to Hal's views on the war because I like and respect him, but I'm just not going to vote for anybody that has a view that is remotely like staying the course is a good thing in Iraq.
