View Full Version : getting rid of the "Zodiac Sign" on your MySpace profile

If you're a rationalist with a MySpace page, that bit about Astrology in your Details section is probably bugging you, too. Well, here you go... enter this in your "About Me" box:

<style type=text/css>
tr[id=Zodiac], tr[id=Zodiac] td, tr[id=Zodiac] td span
{font-size:0px}
</style>

Unfortunately, it only deletes the words "Zodiac Sign". I've been trying for hours and still haven't been able to disable the link itself. I think it's protected in the MySpace site coding. Which sucks. :(

Yeah, the zodiac sign element is annoying. I used this:

Add to hometown field in "Background and Lifestyle":
</table><table class="ss-hmd">

Add to "About Me" :
<style>.ss-hmd{display:none;}</style>

Then all you get is blank hometown field, but no zodiac in sight. :)

You think this is bad: I am a member of what used to be the IEE (now IET, and the UK's learnerd society devoted to engineering); a couple of years ago they supplied diaries which had zodiac signes in them...

I was regretting leaving the Institute of Physics at that point.

But it also deletes everything below "Orientation". No time to fool around with it now, though, i gotta head to work. Thanks for the tip, though, Pipirr. My account is myspace.com/ShiftingPortrait if you're curious. :)

Yes, it does do that. Not ideal, I know. Beats me why the Zodiac crap is hardwired into myspace like it is.

Is it an image? If so, use the adblock extension of firefox to block it...

Is it an image? If so, use the adblock extension of firefox to block it...1) It isn't an image.

2) They are discussing how to remove it from their profile, so that when other people are viewing it, they don't see "Astrology". Putting a Firefox extension on your PC will not change what others see when viewing your profile.

It's a bit incongruous to see James Randi proclaiming his star sign (Leo) (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=133268684). Same for Carl Sagan (Scorpio) (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=46344540).

The Bad Astronomer, however, has cracked it (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=74054746)- no astrology there at all. That man has standards. :)

Yeah, that did strike me a bit odd about Randi. I assumed if he hasn't dismantled the Zodiac crap on his profile, no one's figured it out yet, so i thought i'd give it a whack. I'll play around with it some more later on today.

And it looks like the Bad Astronomer's using your tip to get rid of it. He just doesn't have any fields filled in besides marital status.

Obviously his standards are not that high yet, since he has a Myspace in the first place. :p

Carl sagan?

How?

Is this a challenge attempt?

You know, Charles Darwin (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=37967587) has one too. I should take the opportunity to ask him what he thinks about the neo-Darwinian synthesis..

I couldn't get any of these suggestions to work.
This one does work. (http://www.myspace.com/perpetualprogressllc)

(You will have to go into the code and put your info back in. Also, I added <strong> tags to bold the categories so they matched with the rest of the page.)

The Bad Astronomer one totally fails on my machine running FF3 and IE7. You get some style garbage in the hometown field and that's all.

I'm running FF3 on GNU/Linux, and it doesn't work at all. You see this in "Hometown:"
Hometown: ~/table>~table class="ss-hmd">

and the Zodiac field is:
Zodiac Sign: Libra

I'm going to write to Myspace and ask them to fix this. You have the option to turn off other information, you should be able to turn off the zodiac, too.

I don't have a Zodiac sign on MySpace - take a look (http://www.myspace.com/_matthewbest).

I can't remember where I got the code to do it, but it looks like I have replaced the "Heroes" field with all my personal information (and just left out putting Zodiac Sign in there). A bit tedious but it seems to work...

OK I found where I got the code from. Go to http://www.myspace.com/perpetualprogressllc
and they have instructions there.

The Perpetual Progress code is a bit of a hack. It messes up my profile a little bit, but it's still tolerable. It's not like I have very high standards anyway, my profile is basically a joke. I'd post the link but I can't due to my low post count.

Who cares?

I mean it's a cute bit of history. I have never met someone who thought they actually meant anything.

Does everyone get annoyed when those Chinese restaurants hand out calendars with the animal of the year and what it means on them too?

P.S. y'all have Myspace.

I've met plenty. Astrology is pretty big.
I've even met people who told me that they're compatible with sign X, but incompatible with sign Y, and they let their sign define who they are, which is rather creepy if you stop to think about it.

I knew one guy who had huge astrology books, and would spend hours poring over them. He was looking for something, and he wasn't finding it, but he thought he would find it if he just went a little deeper down the rabbit hole.

So I'm not a big fan of astrology, and I'll avoid advertising it if I can. MySpace lets you opt out of religion by defining yourself as an "atheist", they should let you opt out of the Zodiac, too.

I don't.
It's true that as far as superstitions go, astrology mainly falls in the "harmless/silly" category. I'm not going to break my neck fighting it. However, if I ran the Chinese restaurant, I wouldn't be advertising the Zodiac.

It's silly they don't let you opt out, but really, I only have so much fight in me. I'll save it for the woos that matter, like Homeopathy (government sponsored woo), global warming denial, creationism (fortunately dying out), radical Islam, and other things that are actually effecting the world.

Astrology is just dumb. Seriously, if a man/woman won't date a person because of silly stuff like astrological signs, it's probably a favor... do you really want to get involved in that?

I don't.

Yeah, but all you have to do is copy/paste some code, and/or send an e-mail.
It takes less than 15 minutes. I think it's worth it.

Well first I have to make a myspace page.
