Yesterday morning my Windows98 2nd froze. Last night I tried to boot but after the Windows screen appeared and left the screen returned the message

Initializing a vkd device, Windows protection error, retart Windows.

So I did as per instruction but the same routine happened again and again.

Anyone with ideas how to restore my Windows98 to normal function?

I am presently using my daughter's compuater.

Yes, keyboard is one trouble factor that can bring about non-booting from failed loading of vkd device whatever, according to reports in the web.

However and this is the trouble that applies to my case, it can be a bad sector, read that physically damaged portion of the harddisk surface on duty, preventing Windows from loading completely, because the bad sector is situated physically within the surface area occupied by user.dat file of the Windows program.

How to fix the trouble? Here, read below:

1. Insert your Windows 98 service/boot disk in the 3.5" drive.

2. Restart your computer and go to Cmos.

3. Choose boot from drive A.

4. From drive A or the Ram drive furnished by the service disk, do a scandisk/surface of your harddisk working as drive C.

5. Choose 'fix' everytime the scandisk program asks you whether you want to fix a trouble it has discovered in the harddisk.

6. When scandisk/surface has finished, restart or reboot your computer as per instruction from the program of scandisk.

7. Get to Cmos and choose boot from drive C.
That is all there is to the trouble and its solution. When Windows comes up on your screen you will see it doing its house maintenance chore by re-enlisting a previous but good copy of user.dat.

And there will be certain steps you have to do again to get your computer to work the way you want it to work before the trouble with vkd device interrupted your routines.
