I'm not sure if this came up in another thread at the time of publication, but a January 2007 article (http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YTUzYmJhMGQ5Y2UxOWUzNDUyNWUwODJiOTEzYjY4NzI) by former Romanian spymaster Ion Mihai Pacepa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_Mihai_Pacepa) gives a fascinating, largely first-hand account of what the author calls the KGB's "super-secret plan for destroying the Vatican's moral authority in Western Europe."

Cool article. James Bond-on-acid! This article fights the antisemitic stereotypes of Pope Pius XII. I like the article about Pacepa's bio, and that Arafat and Kadaffi paid a million bucks for his head. I am not sure why they wanted him offed and what the Romanian connection was there.

Between the Papacy's own blunders, the French Revolution, and then Garibaldi, I'd say the Vatican applied its own coup de grace after WW II, and drove its own nail into the coffin with the recent pedophile priest cover ups.
It's all mopping up now.

Don't rule 'em out. The Catholic Church has a proven history of staying power. People in centuries past have thought it was done for, but it's still around. It might have to change from time to time, but it's a survivor.

And don't forget Deus Igni, the Rosicrucians and the Simon Templars!!:D
