View Full Version : Bookmarks in Firefox

I have a few hundred bookmarks. Ever since I upgraded to the last version of Firefox, that is, on the day they released it, I'm "losing" my bookmarks. They simply disappear. Then I have to look for a folder called "backupbookmarks", or sth like it, which Firefox updates daily at the Application Data folder, and "import" a backup from the previous day.
It works seamlessly and it takes me 1 minute/s to fix it. I've already reinstalled the latest version, but it keeps happening. Well, one day I might get tired of it and simply install an earlier version. But my questions are: a) has it happened to anyone else? and b) do I have too many bookmarks?? The file I import has about 170Kb, which doesn't seem that big.
How many bookmarks you folks have? Should I start considering to prune them a little bit? I love my bookmarks, they're a summary of my tastes, interests and dreams. :)

I've never lost a bookmark in FF, as far as I know. I have maybe 200 of them in a fairly tidy filing system. I admit I only use about 30 of them regularly as it's often quicker to tap a few letters into the address bar and let autocomplete do the rest.
I only prune to remove dead links. I recently installed Foxmarks to synch with my laptop, that works pretty well.

I haven't noticed that. I'm using FF 2.00.2 and I have too many bookmarks to count. I will delete a bookmark if I try to use it and it's dead, but otherwise I don't bother to go through them and prune.
I have no idea what could be clobbering your bookmarks, but do wonder if some are just managing to go astray in the folder. I find on my laptop that it's very easy to shift an icon or bookmark accidentally while working with the "eraserhead" button, and often lose files in Explorer into adjacent folders. If I were losing bookmarks often in a bookmark file that is deep with folders, I'd open up "manage bookmarks" and do a search just too make sure they're not hiding.
Otherwise I have no good ideas except that since Mozilla's bookmark file is an htm file, it's really easy to save a back up, so an extra copy somewhere else might be a good idea. I've been transferring my bookmarks for ten years or more, and I'd certainly hate to lose them.

I use the web site del.icio.us for my bookmarks, and never have a problem. I have about 300 bookmarks--some work, some play, some both.

No, it has not happened to me. You can never have too many bookmarks. :D
The file I import has about 170Kb, which doesn't seem that big. Nah, my file is 1,568Kb in size, so your 170Kb shouldn't be a problem.

FF bookmarks are stored as an XML or HTML file, IIRC. So are you having some sort of Windows issue with where that file is located? TEMP directory or something?

I don't think so. The 1st time it happened, I went looking for the source file and found this cute looking folder:
C:\...\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.p0o\bookmark backups
Since then, each time my bookmarks disappear, I import them back from the latest file in that folder, .html, where updates are done daily automatically. Works neatly.
It's been 3 days since it happened the last time. Hope it sticks now.
RayG, that many bookmarks?? At some point googling the correct words should suffice. :re:

Oh, but see, ALL bookmarks disappear at once, as if they were erased or as if Firefox couldn't load them.

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you were losing some bookmarks.
Strange. The only hints on this I've seen are that for some reason a shutdown problem can clobber the bookmarks, and sometimes accidental creation of new profiles can lose them (but they're not gone then, just in the wrong profile).
E.T.A...you may have seen this already, but here's a page with some hints on the problem: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

I delete them all every time I switch off.
I have no idea why, but I'm sure I've saved over a centibyte of hard drive space.
