I just checked my passport on the State website. It says it being processed.
Twelve weeks since applying and two weeks to departure on the 16th.

US, my son's friend applied at the end of May and hasn't received his, either. We submitted the 'check status' information and got back a locator number, which can be used to print out a proof of application. The letter says that when you have two weeks or less to departure, contact them through a separate link. I told son's friend that if he doesn't have it by this Friday, we'll go the other route.
[mom mode] Of course, I told him in FEBRUARY to apply for the passport.[/mom mode off]

IIRC, proof of application (plus DL or other acceptable ID) is all you will need for the cruise.

I got my "expedited" (they said 4 weeks) passport after 8 weeks and several phone calls. Everytime I called, I sat on hold for an hour, but if you're up late/early, you can do better. The office opens at 6am eastern, and calling then got me through immediately. Just a thought.

The thing that hacks me off most about this is:
- I have an FBI file and formerly had a Secret military clearance.
- I've been in the military.
- I get my fingerprints done every 4 years for my state security license.
- I've had a passport in my current name with my social security number previously and if the photo still exists, I look like a mustachioed age progressed version of what I did in 1981.
Why does it take so long for people like me with all this evidence that I'm a U.S. citizen? Reviewing my paperwork, and I imagine millions of other applicants would take a couple of minutes max if State could cross reference databases.
.buzz.. buzz, Bret Cantwell.. buzz buzz, social, signature, photos... APPROVED and off to the print shop.

But I'm going to be cutting it close.
Last Name: CANTWELL
Date Of Birth: you saw the thread
Social Security Number: xxx-xx-xxxx
Your passport application locator number is 11111111.
We have finished processing your passport, and it has been mailed to you.
You requested delivery by regular mail. Passport Agencies use Priority Mail. This means you should receive your passport on or about 08/19/2007.
What a difference 24 hours makes. :)

1930's to 40's attire is classic and never grows old on a cruise--that is, if she wants to define elegance, amidst the tourism attire that will no doubt previal on board.

Indeed, good news! For what its worth, I received mine only a couple of days after mailing, a good 3 or 4 days before the estimated date, so you probably have a little cushion.

And for my second trick, I mean post :)
I'll be on the cruise with my mom, sgf8. Im certainly looking forward to it as it will be my first cruise and only my second time on a large ship. First time was a battleship in the monterey bay. By the way, dont anyone mention that a young kid went missing, that many shells were fired from the ship, and that a bunch of craters appeared in monterey that day :boxedin:

Back on page 8, two weeks ago I posted photos of me (http://forums.randi.org/showpost.php?p=2798898&postcount=228) in my Army dress blues which I will not be wearing.
And no, I still haven't gotten a haircut (http://forums.randi.org/showpost.php?p=2660746&postcount=1). If I don't get one before departure, I'll be getting one either in Vancouver or on the ship.
Here's me drinking Natty (http://forums.randi.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=6351&d=1176044481) in my apartment... and a few hours later (http://forums.randi.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=6353&d=1176044738) passed out at my computer.
Who is the only deity you can wear with a cocktail dress? Kukulcan (http://forums.randi.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=6216&d=1175478785). (10 points to whoever gets this joke)
And then from Mayan themed photo we move to one with an Aztek (http://forums.randi.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=5696&d=1172197367).
Taken 7 years ago, I I don't look much different (http://forums.randi.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=5316&d=1170046644) today.
So, do I need to post more photos? :p

Booking early. Pshaw. Where's the thrill in that? You miss out on the nerve wrenching wait in line, the excitement of penciling in those little dots that you haven't seen since high school, and who in their right mind would pass up on getting stuck with their second choice instead of first?

Okay now that we are getting close, Mike is starting to ask questions about life on board. His main concerns all evolve around food. So hopefully Jeff or someone can answer these questions.
Is it all you can eat all day long? I know you pay more for room service but can you pop in and get ice cream in the middle of the night without using room service?
Why does the little booklet say they sell a card for sodas? Do you have to pay for iced tea and sodas outside of the meals? They also say you get a collectors cup with this card, does that mean you have to carry around the cup every time you want a refill?
During the cocktail welcome thingy on the first night, are drinks free? Can my son (underage) come to this cocktail welcome party?

OK, I have a whopping 1 cruise under my belt, but I've checked this with Jeff, so...
Food is more or less available all the time. Room service is 24/7 (tho the menu was limited at night last time), and is included. You oughta slip the delivery person a coupla bucks tho.
You pay for booze, but iced tea is free. The soda thing - it was just a sticker affixed to the card you carry last time - is a good deal, if you're a caffeine fiend like me. just flash the card and you get vitamin C whenever you want.
Yes, you get a cup, no, you don't carry it around. You just walk up to the bar and ask for a drink.
Last cruise, we had a little card that functions as boarding pass and credit card, that's all you have to carry with you, so it's convenient.
I asked all the same questions last time :) Don't worry about it too much, and get ready to have fun!

IIRC, Mark (Antique Hunters' partner) is leading the tour, and since youare staying Saturday night at Oke's and Mark's place, I think things can be worked out.
Like El Spectre said, there's a pretty fair number of us that have cruised before (this will be number 6 for me) and we'll get you through this.
Just get to the airport a couple hours early, don't stress if the line at passport control is long and the customs people want you to open your bag, just get to Vancouver and the JREF folks will take you in-hand and get you where you need to be.
Just wait until you see the frickin boat up-close..... :eye-poppi
sgf8/sue, SpeederA andSpectre nailed the drinks. Lemonade, fruit punch, icetea, and water are complimentary. For sodas, you can either pay by the glass (expensive) or buy a sticker (or card, probably depends on the cruise line) for a set price that will let you get all the soda you want (you still have to pay for the booze by glass). Charged to your stateroom account, you don't have to pay anything up-front. They'll probably have a signup place located on deck (last cruise it was near the dining area) before we sail--that's where Cleon and I got ours. Recommended if your a medfium to heavy soda drinker.

It's probably (read almost definitely) the Renaissance Vancouver Hotel Harbourside. It is directly across the street and is another Marriott property.

I noticed that my Marriott reservation says that I am arriving on Thurs when in fact I am arriving on Sat. I tried to change the reservation but they won't let me. I emailed Joe yesterday. I hope everyone else double checked their dates for the Marriott?

It's probably (read almost definitely) the Renaissance Vancouver Hotel Harbourside. It is directly across the street and is another Marriott property.

GG handled the dress code question, as for which nights are which, normally a little paper is slipped into your room each night with the next days' activities listed, and the dinner dress code is listed there, plus it gets mentioned while on-board. When in doubt, ask most any of the crew, they should know.

There is food available all the time. Room service is free, but a small $2-$3 tip is customary. There are three meals in the main dining room, a buffet that is nearly always open, and a few other options as well. YOU WILL NOT GO HUNGRY.
Why does the little booklet say they sell a card for sodas? Do you have to pay for iced tea and sodas outside of the meals? They also say you get a collectors cup with this card, does that mean you have to carry around the cup every time you want a refill?
Sodas are considered bar drinks, so you have to pay for each one. If you sign up for the unlimited soda plan, a sticker is put on your card, and all you have to do is show it to get a soda. The cup is optional... you don't need it to get a soda.
During the cocktail welcome thingy on the first night, are drinks free? Can my son (underage) come to this cocktail welcome party?
Yes and yes. :)

Also - the Renaissance (the hotel across the street) is holding a strike vote today - so I suspect the shuttle may be toasties, depending on the outcome. And there may be picketers in the vicinity of the Pinnacle (across the street) to welcome us all.

Is there some law that says you have to change clothes every day? If I wore the same outfit every day, people might think (1) I didn't own any other clothes, (2) I was wearing dirty clothes. So what? They could just as logically assume (1) I liked that outfit and owned multiple copies of it, (2) I was washing it out at night and it stayed clean, (3) my suitcase got lost.
If people think I don't own more clothes, maybe it's true. Maybe I'm poor and don't own more clothes. So what? Maybe I'm rich but just don't care about clothes. So what? Maybe I'm environmentally conscious and am limiting my purchases for ideological reasons. So what?
I vote for a permanent repeal of the silly custom of feeling that you have to show up in a different outfit every day to impress people! As long as my clothes are presentable and don't smell, don't judge me!

I went shopping last night to pick up some good hiking/kayaking/outdoorsy shoes. Before I made it to the shoe store I stopped at H&M and dropped my credit card down on a giant bag of clothes that I then had to carefully tie to my messenger bag (leaving no room for shoes or time to find a pair anyway) and bike the five miles home.
Maybe I can wear some of the new clothes on the trip.

The list of activities Jeff posted on the previous page (for folks with 30 ppp like me) should give an idea. And as a few of us who aren't into the snooty fallouty crap have alluded, you don't have to do the formal or informal if you would rather get pizza and a beer.
As I told Jami when she started stressing over outfits - the only thing you have to do is get on the ship.
No one is going to care if you wear the same outfit twice to a formal or informal function and if they do you have a number of JREFers who will have a conversation with them regarding their rudeness.

Firstly what is a 30ppp?
I wasn't looking forward to the formal dinners as I'm really not into that type of food, I'm a pizza and Dr. Pepper kind of gal. I will miss sitting an socializing with people in a formal setting, but would look forward to eating and socializing in a more causal setting. So if there are others like me who would rather gather someplace less formal, ask me to join you, please!

The break even point for soda is 28 sodas over the seven days, i.e. 4 per day. This calculation takes into account gratuity on the individual sodas and no gratuity for the unlimited price. If gratuity is added to the unlimited price, then 32 is the break even point with an average of 4.57 sodas/day.
As for the liquor, it's harder to make an accurate calculation since the volume of the spirits is not specified (likely 750ml = 25.36oz), and the box o' nuts is a rather unknown variable. However, I'll go with the standard 1 ounce (29.57ml) per drink pricing. The classic liquor package ($60) breaks out to $2.37/oz and the premium liquor package ($80) is $3.16/oz. Ordered separately with gratuity, the prices would be $171.58 and $178.77 for the liquor and six cans of soda ($13.46 w/ gratuity). Throw in a few dollars for the nuts and that's at least $100 difference.

Holy crap. And I thought nyc prices are a rip-off. Even with the bulk plan you've got to be a guzzler when it comes to soda. Notice it doesn't even include bottled water which is $2.50 and up!!!! Oy.
As for internet, it's $0.65/minute and it gets cheaper if you use more, but try as I may, I can't seem to get anyone at celebrity to give me an answer about what the average connect speed is. At 1mb I could synch with my servers easily in under a minute or two and then disconnect, if it's more like 28k, well.....
I don't even want to think about what they charge for cell phone roaming service.....

You forgot to take into consideration that not all days are full days and that the places that serve food open late on the first day and close early on the last. Also, not all locations on the ship that serve soda accept the unlimited plan. Plus you need to research juice and if it's included in the soda plan as well as if it's free during breakfast. Only then I shall consider your calculation possibly valid! :p

My boyfriend Mike is looking forward to free fancy food. He loves Japanese and seafood, so we will rarely be eating together. Stirling as a true teenager will probably opt for the pizza.
Susan Susan, you will miss a lot of fun if you choose to go to the buffet instead of sitting with the round robin group each night. Just saying. My teenage son and his friend are going to sit in the dining room most night. The "formal" dinners are pretty much like eating at any restaurant, it's not stuffy.

Why can't I find out what nights are formal, semi-formal, or not-really-casual??? I have a bed full of clothes here waiting to go in suitcases and I cannot figure this crap out. Help. Dying.
Like you, I can go on a week business trip with a single suitcase.
You may not know which nights are which until you get on the ship. They leave little notes in your cabin each day describing the schedule for the following day. Pack everything willy-nilly, and then unpack it all and put it in the closet when you get on board. It will be more difficult to live out of the suitcase, cause the rooms are too small.

The list of activities Jeff posted on the previous page (for folks with 30 ppp like me) should give an idea. And as a few of us who aren't into the snooty fallouty crap have alluded, you don't have to do the formal or informal if you would rather get pizza and a beer.
In fact I do have to do the formal nights since I'm speaking, but it doesn't matter because I'm actually very comfortable dressing up and can't wait to try the cuisine. My main problem is that for the casual nights I can more easily adapt whatever I'm wearing all day instead of a full costume change, but what I wear all day depends on what day it is.

Okay, sounds like that'll have to do, thanks! I got mostly everything packed last night. For a brief moment I thought, "I bet I can fit it all in one suitcase." Ha, silly, desperate, overtired girl.

Note on the internet from the hotel - when I was there (two nights ago) you could pick up a hotspot on a local network and register with them much more cheaply than the $15.95 hotel rate. I'm going to check out the booze pricing - those package deals look pretty good...

I need to give it as an emergency contact for the people I'm boarding the dogs with but my booklet is at home and I'm at work.
Why?
Are the people taking care of your dogs incompetent to handle an emergency on their own? If they are, why are you using them? Either way, whatever happens will happen whether you know about it or not. Unless you plan on jumping ship to dash home to be at your dog's side, it's probably better that you don't know until the cruise is over.
There was a time when one of the great beauties of a cruise was that you were completely cut off from all your problems on land. On the first cruise, I left my cell phone in the car at the airport and had a terrific, carefree vacation.

As another dog owner, I would want to know, if there is an problem.
If for instance they had to take the dog to the pet hospital, which can be very very expensive, I know this from personal experience.
You would probably have to consult and provide a credit card to the hospital about how much care you want provided for your pet.
I would never give a boarder a blank check, emergency pet care can rack up thousands of dollars in days.
These are decisions that definately need to be made by the owner, hence the boarders need emergency contact numbers.

Yeppers. Rarely does something just "happen" -- there's pretty much always a decision to be made, and usually one has to be made quickly. Like, do we do the $5,000 surgery or put her to sleep? (I've had that call.)

It's pretty common to have an emergency contact, as the vet bills (like others have mentioned) can run pretty high. I know at stables they often make you sign a contract, since the bills go up so high, giving them permission to euthanize if they can't get ahold of you and the bills go over xxx amount. I can't think of any pet owner that wouldn't want to be contacted.

That's the ironic thing. I haven't regularly consumed caffeinated beverages for nearly three years, less than a single pot's worth of regular coffee (and no I didn't have any the day I wrote this :)).

Yes, this will increase the average number of fountain beverages to at least 4.25 every 24 hours. Where you can use a fountain beverage pass has no bearing on the price of pass. According to the cruise representative I spoke to (before composing my OP), juices do not cost extra during breakfast. :p

I hear there is free ice tea during meals. I'm counting on that for my caffeine fix.
Right now I'm trying to inform the husband about the peculiar dietary habits of the animals. Like the red rump tarantula likes 2 crickets a day (he's getting ready for a molt) and the other tarantula can only have small size crickets, and the Scorpions like you to tap on the glass before you feed them.. and on and on. My daughter is supposed to do this (they are her pets) but she is having part of the week off for fun too.
The dog is already in a depression. He knows someone is leaving.
Hopefully Nova Land will come by and cheer him up!

What satellite provider are you using? If you are using Globalstar, you need to be aware that service up here has degraded to about 30% for much of the state. As far south as you guys will be, you will probably get better coverage, but if you are using Globalstar, you need to expect poor coverage. This is due to the failure of the amplifiers for the voice services on their satellites. From what I understand, their data services are not affected, but voice services will not be reliable until they replace their satellites.

I arrived yesterday; the weather was spectacular by yesterday afternoon.
Since I live in a much smaller town, I'm going to enjoy a brief (that's all I ever want) indulgence in urban culture till AntiqueHunter's party tonight.
There's an amazing touring art exhibit in Vancouver I will see today called "Monet to Dali". Fellow JREFers are welcome to join me. I'm also checking for interesting music (rock, jazz or blues) or comedy before the party. I have my cellphone: the number, backwards so unsearchable is 3720983408, and will check PMs later this morning and around lunchtime. The forum's not letting me post a link to the art exhibit, but just google the exhibit name.
Bo
"Monet to Dalí represents the most comprehensive showing of European painting and sculpture in Vancouver in more than half a century. Drawn from the superb collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the exhibition consists of more than 80 paintings, drawings and sculpture that demonstrate key examples from the European modernist movement. Organized into four groupings, this exhibition covers a century of art making from 1864 to 1964 and showcases important work by the major Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, early modern sculptors and avant-garde artists interested in Dadaism, Cubism and Surrealism. Most notably, the exhibition includes key works by Manet, Monet, Cézanne, van Gogh, Rodin, Picasso, Dalí and other renowned artists. Together, the works in this stellar collection illuminate the breadth of creativity in one of the most extraordinary epochs in the history of Western art."

I've been talking ever since... I did get the pictures (all 613 of them) onto my computer, so in the next couple days I'll be posting them here, and in threads of their own, and all over the place.
Oh, and btw.... OH MAN!!!!!!!!
This is maybe my favorite picture, artistically. It's a waterfall on the glacier.

Oh, and for those of you who understand this - I went to Constellation Saturday night and she was there. I swilled 4 gin and tonics to muster the courage to ask her to dance and finally did.
She said no. :(
Her loss. I think she's an idiot.
