I know it's early, but I'm interested in who is attending, so I thought I'd start a thread...

me
my son and his friend
My best friend and wife (they went to TAM5, but aren't forum members)

Who else? I'm sure Hutch will start an official list, or he can hijack this one.

Nah, this is a good thread for it. Tell you what, you occassionally bump itto keep it on the front page and I'll compile the lists as necessary.

For the record, I am signed up and Cleon will also be along as Cruise Roomie.

I can't get the time off work, but will be available in Vancouver on the departing weekend, and am trying to convince the Grand Pooh-Bahs at BCSkeptics and BCHumanists to do something on the Saturday night.

If we had a "special guest speaker", say, at the Vogue, do you think a lot of people would arrive a day eary? I suppose it would depend on the speaker, and the amount of advance notice? (have people already booked their flights?)

No, no... I'm being serious. Dr. Cain runs the Universe Today website, and works with The Bad Astronomer. Cain has hosted Point of Inquiry a couple of times, IIRC. Or maybe it was Skepticality?

It'll be roughly third quarter, so it won't be up until late. Given that I want to bring some sort of astronomical instrument (I have to figure out how!) I prefer that. It makes fainter things easier to see.

Before y'all book travel tickets - I encourage everyone to try and get to Vancouver at least one day prior to cruise departure. I'd like to have a get together for JRefers at my place, wine, BBQ etc... if people are interested and willing - say the night before. I plan to get outta Kabul around Aug 28th or so. Thoughts?

I was going to fly in the day we embarked, but after two episodes of The Amazing Race where flight delays significantly f-ed up the competators game plan I've decided to fly in the day before and will be willing to participate in any pre-cruise festivites planned. I can't speak for Jami (yet), but I'm sure she'll be willing to join in.

I may rent a car for a couple of days to visit family friends so I'd be able to drive some to your place. Has a final decision been made on the official pre-cruise hotel? I want to book something nearby and cheaper if possible, and if not, want to know what my options are.

Antiquehunter

The last Email I received from Joe Wagg was that the Marriott Pinnacle was the hotel with a negotiated rate. (My partner helped to negotiate the rate - it is a very preferential rate for that property.) Its a beautiful, modern hotel with many waterfront views, well-located in downtown Vancouver, walking distance or $5 cab rides from loads of things to do.

For staying right in downtown Vancouver, hotel prices are going to be pretty steep, especially at that time of year (its cruise season, still summer etc...) There are a few flophouse sorts of hotels and a really grotty Travellodge - but definitely not recommended. If a value property is your preference, then my suggestion would be to look at staying in one of the suburbs say... Surrey, or Burnaby and then you can take the Skytrain in to Vancouver - its about 40 minutes. This may shave $100 a night off the hotel bill, but you'll lose $100 worth of convenience. And, you'd have to lug your cruise stuff on the train when it comes time for boarding.

I have a comfy hide-a-bed so far unspoken-for, if you don't mind cats.

Neither Jami nor I have cat issues since we're both cat owners and I think you mentioned smoking was o.k. as long as it was out on the porch to I'll keep the invitation in mind.

I'm still trying to book a flight with Southwest as I'm determined to not have to spend $100 on taxis to D-FW (I live 4 miles from Love), though it means I'll be flying into SeaTac instead of Vancouver directly and they're only taking bookings through Aug. 24th currently, so I'm remaining flexible on my hotel situation until I find out when the hell I'm even getting there in the first place. :)

The cost of a taxi from the Love Field area to DFW airport is about $40 - $50, which is less than the cost of parking at any location in the airport area for a week. The cheapest at Love is $7 per day - so that's about $50-$70 depending on your travel plans. That washes with one way to the airport in a cab. When you are back from a long trip and schlepping through disembarkation, customs, and airports, it is very nice to walk out of the airport and be dropped at your house. If you can get friends to drop you at DFW and take a taxi home, that's even better!

You're killing me. You know *I* wanna be there.

We were so lavish with my pitiful number of vacation days going to TAM, and then we got a summer wedding in Anchorage sprung on us.... I know about the costs of taxis from 75 and Royal to D-FW because I've been paying them the last 8 years I've been taking vacations. Part of my wanting to fly Southwest is how close Love is for a taxi, and part is because in 21 years of living in Texas I've never flown Southwest. Based on my location and where Love is, I figure 1/4 of my cost will be the initial pickup.

I have a comfy hide-a-bed so far unspoken-for, if you don't mind cats.

I'm placing a claim on it provisional on how Jami feels about it. She's up for the BBQ and I'll just need to hear back from her regarding our pre-cruise accomodations. She wants to pay for half of the hotel (which I'd rather not let her do), but if we can get room gratis, that means we'll both save regardless. I'll let you know in the next few days.

Tentative reservation on the couch - check.

Sea-Tac to Vancouver - you have a few choices:

-Quick Shuttle Bus - not a bad bus, about $45 each one way. Takes you across the Canadian border and about 20 minutes from my house - easy pickup for me in a car, provided you don't have too much crap. (I have a very small car)

-Amtrak to Vancouver - don't know the cost, but there is a train. It takes you to downtown Vancouver by the Science Center.,

-Rent a car one way to Bellingham WA or similarly close town, drop it there, and I can arrange a pickup somehow. Bellingham is about 20 minutes south of the border, and I'm 20 minutes from the border.

-Come early, take the ferry from Seattle to Victoria BC, visit Victoria, take the ferry to Tsawassen or North Vancouver and I can pick you up at the terminal. Might be hard to deal with lots of luggage this route, but it is doable and as walk-on or bus passengers the fares are really cheap (I think about $12 a head each way.)

-Fly to YVR. Alaska airlines runs frequent and cheap flights SeaTac to Vancouver.

Did some price checking, as I'll be coming into Seattle, because I want to spend a day or two there and maybe check in on a certain grumpy old skeptic...

BUS: like AH said, it leaves from either Sea-Tac airport or Downtown and does go direct to the Ports if you plan on gong straight to the cruise and not see Vancouver. Cost is $77.00 Round Trip.

GREYHOUND BUS: Goes from Greyhound terminal to Greyhound terminal, Round trip is $54.00

TRAIN: The AMTRAK leaves at 11:30am from Seattle and arrives in Vancouver at 11:35am. Regular coach seat is $28.00, an upgrade to "Business" is $41.00. Only problem is the return, the only train leaves Vancouver at 6:00 PM and arrives in Seattle 10:05 PM.

AIR: Flights are plentiful and short, but the cheapest fare I could find on expedia.com was $287.00 R/T.

RENTAL CAR: A full-size car from 29 Aug-9 Sep rented in Seattle is $463.04. A Standard SUV is almost twice that at $823.61. If there are 3-4 people who can agree on itinerary, it might be cost-effective and give folks maximum flexibility.

Right now my choices would be Train up there and bus back, or Rental Car if I can find 2-3 riders to share.

If you had 3-4 people, it might be cheaper to rent a car in Seattle (as compared to the other public transportation), but drop it in Vancouver, then make another rental in Vancouver and drop in Seattle. I will check that out and post.

A couple of tidbits:

- The Greydog station and the Amtrak station in Vancouver drop you at the same place - close to the Science Center. You can pickup the 'Skytrain' there, or you're about a $10 cab to goto the Waterfront from the train/bus station.

- On the rental car situation: Seems like a bit of a waste to rent a car and have it parked while you're on a boat. Also, one way rentals across borders tend to be tricky and/or add to your costs. Parking in downtown Vancouver is incredibly expensive - at major hotels, look at $20 a day. My recommendation would be to either QuickShuttle, Greyhound or Amtrak (one-way) to Vancouver. Rent a Vancouver based car for your pre-cruise activities and drop the car when you board the cruise. Then, book a car for when you exit the ship - price a short term one way rental Vancouver - Seattle for the drive back.

- Depending on the traffic you hit in Seattle and the border lineup, you can do the drive Seattle - Vancouver in about 2 1/2 hours. However, SeaTac is on the South side of Seattle - so if you hit rush hour, or if you hit a border lineup, your mileage may vary. Dramatically. Labour Day weekend border lineups can be AWFUL - although I would expect that the bulk of the traffic would be southbound late August.

- If you have the time, don't overlook the Seattle-Victoria / Victoria-Vancouver ferry option. I'm not sure the cost as a foot passenger on the Seattle-Victoria leg, but it won't be much. There are bus companies that operate on the ferries themselves to arrange ground transport once you have arrived. You can visit Victoria for a few hours (that's all it really takes - although Vancouver Island as a whole IS lovely, and you can easily spend a couple of days in a rental car sightseeing) and then you hop on the Victoria-Tsawassen or North Vancouver ferry (a hop skip and a jump by bus or taxi to the ferry terminal) and catch a 'Pacific Coach Line' bus on the Vancouver ferry. This will take you to the same bus terminus in downtown Vancouver as Greyhound etc... I bet the two ferry fares and the two short bus fares would be comparable in price to the QuickShuttle. It would take you longer, but at least you could say you've visited Victoria. And, if you're lucky you might get to see some Orca or whales on the ferry ride(s).

- A unique option would be a seaplane hop. I'm not sure if the service exists Seattle - Victoria, but you can take a 30 minute seaplane ride in a piper cub thingy for about $100 Canadian one way Victoria - Vancouver. This departs from Victoria main harbour (where the Seattle ferry drops you) and takes you RIGHT to the Vancouver Waterfront (close to our hotel, and right at the Cruiseship terminal). Plus seaplanes are cool.

When you add up the headaches of all this bus/train/car travel, $300 for the plane doesn't start to look like such a bad deal. Alaska airlines usually has cheap fares SEA-YVR at www.alaskaair.com

Oh - if you DO fly into YVR, a cab downtown will be able $35 - $40. If there are a bunch of you arriving at the same time, you can rent a limo for about $60 and split it 3/4 ways. There is bus transport from the airport, but its not very good (I've never used it so I can't help you there) and our skytrain airport link is under construction. Depending on the timeframe and my own travel plans, I MAY be able to do a 'Hutch' and try to offer an airport meet & greet service with a transfer - but no promises. Depends on when I get into Vancouver...

Hi, folks, I'm a long-time skeptic and secular humanist in a science profession who's been reading the forum for awhile but haven't gotten around to posting yet... sorry! I'll try to do better. I'm ready to sign for the Alaska trip but looking for another single woman to share a cabin to avoid the single supplement. I'm a nonsnoring nonsmoker. I'm a nonlibertarian too, but don't hold that against me.

Never been tempted to do a cruise before but this looks great! I recently started a local skeptics society so will be glad to come back with recharged chakras.

I'm going to be interested in participating in or trying to set up hiking and wildlife excursions, and Joe Wagg says there'll be more information about this when I put down the deposit. What do we know so far?

Tentative reservation on the couch - check.

Two people who have been spending time together since 1992 have decided on getting a hotel room instead of your gracious offer of accomodations (she reminded me that my bad back and a hide-a-bed probably isn't a good idea if I'm going to hike within a few days - I tactfully didn't remind her that 3-5 hours in the bathroom isn't uncommon for her). We'll be BBQ though and I'm looking forward to seeing the full compliment of Sedar photos.

Dammit! I would love to take a seaplane, but my whole reason for flying into SeaTac (apart from Southwest) is that in case my passport doesn't arrive on time I want insurance that I can cross on land.

Hi everyone. TAM5 was my first JREF event, but I had such a great time that I signed up for this cruise while I was still in Vegas. I told my college roommate about all the fun at TAM. He was jealous that he missed it, but he'll be flying into Vancouver to share the cabin with me on the cruise.

I live in Vancouver, so I'm available for, and interested in, whatever pre- or post-cruise events will be going on. I think I talked to Antiquehunter at the forum party at TAM5, and that BBQ sounds fun. I'll contact you to get the location.

As blutoski posted earlier in this thread, the top people in the local BC Skeptics and BC Humanists organizations are excited about Randi and everyone else coming to town for TAA2. They've asked about the possibility of coordinating an event together so the local skeptics who can't take a week off can still get a taste of what they're missing on the cruise. I haven't heard if they've actually set anything up yet.

More information is coming soon. :)

There's just the tiniest little bit of space left...

I'll be sending out mail as well.

On the last cruise, one of the things that surprised me was how many people showed up for the Ouija Board event. Given that we'll have more time on this cruise, I'd like to know what sort of social activities you guys would like.

Throw out some ideas here, and I'll see what we can do.

You're all going to love Mt. Roberts. (unless you're afraid of heights!)

Having a good place to meet, it's easy to come up with 'unofficial' things. At times I wandered around the different lounges looking for a familiar face. Since I didn't know anyone before I went, I was a bit reluctant to intrude on groups. We need sort of an onboard Peppermill that's the 'if you don't have anything to do, show up here' place. I think I heard *someone* saying something about a poker tournament.

We plan on visiting some friends but haven't figured out how to get to Vancover. We leave Seattle on Monday the 10th at 11:43am. We would like to be back in Seattle on Sunday. If you want to work out something let me know.

I can't wait for August and Sept. SkeptiCamp and then TAA it is going to be Grand!

For all you new comers I will be easy to spot and would love to meet you and talk or you can join the group of people I am talking with. You will know me by my photo in my profile and if you don't look at that I will be wearing my black cowboy hat and garb. That goes for you old timers too I went to TAM5 and Hal convinced me to go on TAA2.

Awww crap. I was looking forward to taking a ferry crossing from Seattle to Vancouver, but it doesn't look like I can do that with as much ease as I thought. I'm going to dig deeper into timing from Seattle-Victora-Vancouver and see what I can work out, but I might have to take a shuttle... bleh.

sfg8, don't worry, hopefully by TAA2 you'll recognize almost every one of us on sight so you can walk up and say hello without feeling concious, which brings me to Ramboelmo, make sure and post a photo in this thread early so we can have an idea of who to look for come Sept.

Aw crap. I recalled this option as being Seattle to Vancouver and had decided that was how I was going to get from one to the other. Looks like I might have to do another option, but I was really looking forward to a seaplane ride.

I think we might fly into Seattle and then take the train to Vancouver like Hutch suggested. The price to fly into Vancouver is about $400 each, and only $175 into Seattle. The train will cost $85 each, all in all that is a big difference in price.

Susan, after looking at all the methods of land transport between Seattle and Vancouver I finally broke down and decided to get my passport so air transport would be an option. The land/sea crossings just didn't work for me so if you're pressed for time you might consider a flight. If time is not an issue then just keep checking until you find an itinerary that works for you.

I don't remember which post Hutch made that you're referring to, but you might check the "Hutch's Itinerary" thread or click on his name and click on the "find posts by" in the drop down menu. That will give you his last 300 posts to peruse and you can seek out which one you're looking for.

And to all potential TAA2 participants, hcmom and I are trying to get her to come along so she will likely be joining us in the cruise. :)

At least as far as flyng Southwest out of Texas, it's ugly. The flights you can make after the cruise ship arrives Sunday were already filling up, and I couldn't use my free tickets even though I called the very same day that they started booking for that weekend. I was going to have to stay over until Monday on the return - that coupled with the transportation costs for three people to and from Vancouver, time factors, etc., made no sense for me to fly SW, at least.

Just make sure everyone arrives EARLY for the house party at AH's place. (You'll need to be willing to brave public transit, or have a rental car, or a $60 cab ride, or be one of the few I could accomodate with a vehicle transfer.)

Details to follow, but pre-cruise festivities are in order.

Sgf8 (and any others).

The train leaves Seattle at 7:40am and gets into Vancouver at 11:35am. This gives me/you the rest of the day to explore the city.

The return train leaves Vancouver at 6:00PM and arrives in Seattle at 10:05PM. As this is 9-10 hours after we have docked on the 9th, and gets you downtown late in the evening in Seattle, some planning and coordiantion would be needed.

Amtrak does offer bus services, but so do other companies and they will pick you up by the ships, not at the rail terminal.

I'm going via Quickcoach from the Vancouver docks to the Sea-Tac airport on the 9th, then picking up a shuttle to my hotel for the evening as I am due to leave early on the 10th.

www.amtrak.com can help out.

I meant using my free tickets on Southwest. I have a fistful. Southwest only books 4-5 months in advance, and the cut-off dates are timed to be right before holidays or high travel dates like spring breaks. I checked several times per day, and on the same day they finally began accepting bookings in September, by 10 a.m they had already sold out (so to speak) the free seats except for some early Sunday morning. I know from experience that getting off the cruise ship, picking up luggage, and getting through Customs in Vancouver takes a while. I've been told by locals that the border crossing can be very busy on holiday weeks - I didn't want to take a chance in not being able to get off the cruise ship and get to Seattle to make the flight I could get for free. All that time adds up, and would have made me a bit stressed trying to rush around - it's a vacation! That is what I meant by 'ugly.' I am just flying non-stop from home to Vancouver. I had enough points to fly the boys from DFW, and me from Houston. Even then, the round trip-airfare from DFW to Vancouver was right under $400, and doesn't require transportation from Seattle, and it's non-stop.

Plenty of free seats on non-holiday weeks on Southwest, BTW!

Uncle Hutuchie is the ultimate in helpful JREFers when it comes to things like meetings and meetups and a delight to hang out with. I just wanted to respond jokingly that I had thought about my itinerary and I really should have included a smilie. I also misspoke when I said morning as my flight from SeaTac to Love is in the afternoon; it's my Vancouver to SeaTac that will be in the morning (details below). It's not entirely accurate to say I've thought about my travel to and from TAA2; more like agonized over it for the last 4 months. I was going to fly and do a land crossing, then I was going to fly, then I had to coordinate with Jami, get my passport, etc. etc. etc. each time looking up and planning and figuring routes and times and

I could have taken American from DFW-YVR direct, but as I've said I wanted to take Southwest. It turns out AA 1379 departs at 10:40 am from DFW and AA 330 departs YVR at 1:25 pm. Perfect, but it would cost $1100 for me alone (at least it would tonight). So here's what I wound up with.

Sept. 1
Southwest Love - Seatac 7:45am arrive 11:00am
Wait for Jami in Seattle
Air Canada/Jazz Seatac - Vancouver 3:30pm arrive 4:20pm

Sept 9
Air Canda/Jazz Vancouver - Seatac 11:30am arrive 12:20pm
Leave Jami in Seattle ;)
Southwest Seatac - Love 2:15pm arrive 9:05pm

What is this SeaTac your speaking of? We are thinking of flying into Seattle and taking the train up to Vancouver. Someone else suggested that and it was cheaper than flying straight into Vancouver. Is this SeaTac easier or cheaper? I still haven't booked any travel arrangements.

Don't forget the advice Antique Hunter gave a few pages ago (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?p=2516297#post2516297) about the various travel options.

I looked at various overland/water options and finally decided to go with Air Canada/Jazz from SeaTac to Vancouver. The tickets for 2 round trip were about $500 total.

Honest....cross my heart and hope to die....

I don't know about a lot of stuff....maybe that's why I'm here on this forum?

I see how they get the name Sea for Seattle and Tac for Tacoma. I thought it was some kinda of ocean shuttle thingy.

Before I book my reservations I will re-check the advise given. When I looked weeks ago the train trip from Seattle to Vancouver was about $78 each person one-way. That sure beats the airfare prices.

Hi Susan! I remember you too. No, I'm going solo. My husband doesn't like to travel, and my daughters are 22 and 24 and starting new jobs. My sister lives in Juneau but she is going to be bicycling around Great Britain in September. My family is avoiding me! ;)

The shuttle bus is about the same price as the train and has the advantage that it leaves directly from the Seattle-Tacoma airport and delivers you directly to the dock in Vancouver.

You'll need to check, I could fly from Dallas to Vancouver non-stop roundtrip for $400-something. A Southwest flight to Sea-Tac combined with a shuttle round trip, was going to cost about the same, so I figured the wear-and-tear on my body would be worth the straight shot. It depends on where you are flying from, what day you want to fly, and so on. Check out the flight search engines, as well as Southwest's page (they don't do Orbitz et al)

Susan, I just looked at amtrak.com, the price for a one-way ticket Seattle to Vancouver on 1 Sep is $32.00 one-way. That is the day I am booked for, not
sure if other days have other prices. Leave Seattle 0740 and arrive Vancouver about 1135, meanwhile watching all the Northwest scenery go by.

Depends if you want to spend some time in Seattle, or just head straight for Vancouver. I'm spending a couple nights in the Seattle area.

Checking the AA.com site I found direct flights from D-FW to YVR for crazy amounts. My Southwest flight, with Internet special, was $98 to SeaTac and the same back. The Canada Air/Jazz cost was so high since I was paying for both mine and Jami's tickets round trip.

That said, if I'd pulled my head out of my butt and applied for my passport back in January I probably could have booked a DFW to YVR round trip for about what you quoted.

I have to book a flight, using some of the Pool boys FFmiles and no clue what is happeneing after that. I think I'll hopefully fly in the day before to rest up a bit and then hitch a ride to the docks. Look for big ship.

My roomie had better not snore. That's all I'm saying.

Apparently the Four Seasons overlooks the water and the cruise ship area. I've never been to Vancouver, I only know this because my company just concluded business with a company located in Vancouver, and as part of the deal we will open an 'office' (one room with a phone, probably) in Vancouver. From the way it was described, this office building is above or adjacent to or is otherwise attached to the Four Seasons, so as a 'tenant' we get a special rate.

Joe Wagg at the travel agency can help you find something - he did for my group.

I looked at various overland/water options and finally decided to go with Air Canada/Jazz from SeaTac to Vancouver. The tickets for 2 round trip were about $500 total.I'm going to have to look into that. We went to Australia for cheap by taking a special to Fiji then a separate RT to Australia. It was a huge savings, plus we saw Fiji too.

For those of you on the southern border, however...Tijuana flights around Mexico were real cheap at one time. So we took the bus there and flew to Merida. BIG MISTAKE. Be sure you use an airline that has at least the same standards as a modern country. AeroMexico flights out of LA are just fine. The plane has to meet US standards to land here. But to land in Tijuana, not so much. Absolutely frightening!

Is that $500 Canadian or US?

Is that $500 Canadian or US?

Or me what? ;)

I just looked at my credit card bill and it's showing the two tickets with a "CD" code after it, but shows the amount as $275 U.S., and I don't have my itinerary handy. Some legs, depending on time of day, could get as low as $80 U.S. (plus taxes, fees, etc) and I was satisfied with what I got.

The following are excerpts from a multitude of reviews about the cruise. I just copied stuff I was interested to know. Thought I'd share though since it might also interest you all.

Not in any particular order, not organized and not divided into who said what:I had originally wondered if traveling on a large ship, relative to local standards, would detract from the experience. Our ship had 100 guests, whereas many others had 15. No fear! This is what allowed us to have so many choices for activities on each excursion. There was still one naturalist for every 15 people or so, so we weren't herded like cattle.

Smoking is quite restricted. The only place you can smoke is on deck. All indoor spaces are non-smoking, and the park itself is also non-smoking. Even in the towns I didn't see much smoking.

Exercise facilities were fairly limited. There were a few exercise bikes on deck amid ship. There were also a few basic workout devices in the room where the massages were given, but massages take preference and so you can get booted out. Also, there's no wraparound deck to use for jogging. Due to the nature of the shore excursions, however, there's probably enough activity to keep you busy.

For snorkeling purposes the ship provided fins, snorkel and mask to all passengers, sent directly to your room before the first snorkeling opportunity, to be returned on the last night. Wet suit shorties (3mm) were also available in various sizes. Most of the passengers wore them, although admittedly most of the naturalists didn't. These could be left hanging to dry overnight on deck, so no worries about a wet smelly suit hanging in your bathroom.

There was a small library available from which to borrow books. I left one entitled something like "God and Evolution in the Galapagos," which I found quite interesting. There is a small gift shop with some basics. A doctor is on board if you need her. And they have an open Bridge, so you can get a tour anytime, day or night. There is a TV in your room, but it has no live satellite link, just pre-recorded programming.

We also bought Keen Teva water shoes. They look like tennis shoes with tread bottoms and cutouts to look like sandals with very good toe protection. Much to our delight, many naturalist were wearing them too when we came on board. These were invaluable for wet landings that included lava flow hikes that crossed wet beaches, pools and streams. We found these on our feet more than any other footwear.

Be sure to bring water with you on the excursions. Although the naturalist brings some on the Zodiac, it runs out quickly on the hot days.

We paid only for laundry,

As usual when leaving the country. We bought travel insurance from CSA, specifying a low trip cancellation value, but making sure we had medical and medical evacuation coverage as well as lost or delayed baggage protection. The cost was only $227.00.

The sole difference between cabins on Deck 3 (Deluxe Stateroom) and on Deck 4 (Premium Stateroom) is that the Premium cabin has windows, and the Deluxe portholes. In addition there are five smaller cabins (145 square feet), four on Deck 3 and one on Deck four. Deck 5 has seven Xpedition Suites with 230 square feet and one Penthouse

The CD you receive at the end of the trip has enough photos to provide a lot of memories.

The crew were among the friendliest we have ever experienced; although their language skills were not great.

Internet and communications - the ship has 2-3 computers in the corner of the main lounge and they offer 60 minutes of internet for $30. You have to buy the package of 60 minutes and there is no refund for unused minutes. It is a decent connection and is fine for email. We have Cingular for cell phone service and they charged $2.29 per minute for international roaming. We had good reception in a number of places and I heard some people were able to use their Blackberry devices off and on.

Altitude sickness - some folks experienced problems in Quito due to the altitude. Most people experienced a shortness of breath when climbing stairs and during the walking portion of the city tour. There is a café in the hotel that offers Coca Tea as a remedy.

A strong insect repellant is also recommended, as there are some really nasty critters around that would love to make you their next meal.

The Expedition provides many useful extras: Binoculars [not great], Wet Suits (the waters are cold, but once in are not too cold), Snorkeling gear, and Bathrobes, to name a few.

I was very impressed by the small things provided like Q-tips and cotton balls as well as a converter to use for the electrical items we brought. There is also a small clothesline in the shower, although it took ages for anything to dry. There was a TV set that had a few channels, but we were much too busy to watch anything.

Mind you, high-intensity is not really that strenuous. Most trails were under 3 miles round-trip, with minimal elevation change. The big problem is walking on rocks.

If you're at all prone to seasickness, you must take meds with you. Luckily, we didn't get sick, although there was a lot of pitching and rolling. At times, I wished for a strap on my bed to keep me from rolling out of it. The Xpedition's stabilizers help somewhat while it's moving, but when it's anchored they don't help at all. The worst pitching and rolling occurs while it's standing still. It's the worst we've ever encountered, but then it's also the smallest boat we've ever been on

Will you get seasick? OK, the boat does rock when anchored...all boats rock when they are at anchor...this isn't a 2000 person ship. I'd say 1/4 of the guests got sick the first night..and then everyone adjusted

Some beach landings involve sliding out of the Zodiac into water, so you need shoes (sandals are best) that can't be hurt by getting wet.

Some landings are on rocky, uneven surfaces. You need good sturdy shoes/hiking boots with good tread. Since there may be two activities in one day that involve swimwear, you need two swimsuits, as the one you got wet in the a.m. won't be dry by the afternoon.

direct-dial telephones with voicemail, hairdryers, safes and bathrobes are provided at all accommodation levels.

In the hotel lobby, we began to experience altitude sickness, dizziness, shortness of breath & nausea. Quito is 9,500 ft in elevation.

I've never had this happen @ 10,000 feet, even going up after no time to acclimatize. But I did get sick at 14,000 (Pike's Peak, CO, you drive up) I was at 5,000 a few days before going. I had severe head and arm pain which disappeared completely only a few hundred feet down the mountian. I can't recall if I was nauseated.

Machu Picchu: 8,000 ft, 3hr train ride then bus to site

Cuzco: 11,500 ft
Monasterio Hotel, built in 1595 as a monastery.

For anyone who wants to snorkel, I suggest bringing a very small blow up inner tube. They take up little space when flat. I've snorkeled many times and using a little floating device is great. It holds you up as you paddle along looking down.

I'm sure if you PM Jeff he can give you some idea of timing and such. AH may still have his hide-a-bed and a willingness to play taxi so you might PM him if you don't want to try and find a cheap hotel. One thing I can tell you is that you want your flight to be the day before. Embarcation is in the evening, but it's during Labor Day Weekend at the end of what will likely be the busiest travel summer ever so I'd buy the time insurance and shoot for Vancouver a day early in case there's a flight delay.

hcmom - panic not.

OK - first off, why don't you post your travel itinerary of when you arrive, now that you have your flight booked?

When you arrive in Vancouver, the airport is not in the downtown core. There are buses (but I've never used them personally, so I can't recommend them to you) and a cab downtown will probably set you back $35 - $40. The US dollar is currently being accepted at par everywhere in Canada (the official rate of exchange is around $1.05 - $1.06 if you go to an exchange booth) so you can either just use US money or exchange some upon arrival. ATMs are everywhere and you should have no difficulty using them to withdraw Canuck bucks.

You're arriving at the peak of cruiseship / visiting season, so if you do need a hotel (depending on when you arrive you may) you're going to have to get a room, and rooms are expensive right now. There are several hotels in the downtown area that are close to the cruiseship terminal (the cruiseships leave RIGHT from downtown Vancouver) - Joe Wagg (thru my partner Mark) negotiated a good room rate on a very nice property for cruisers - but its still pricey. There are some cheaper hotels in the downtown core, but off the top of my head I'd be surprised if you found anything for less than $150 a night. There are several hostels in the downtown core if you're REALLY value-conscious - I haven't used them, but they are popular with the student / value traveller set. I think you can get a hostel-stay for $25 a night - but that may be pretty 'rustic'.

The couch at my house is unspoken for - and we're having a little get together at my house on the evening before the cruise. So long as you don't mind revellers using your bedroom until the party is over, and you aren't terrorized by two friendly cats, the couch option is gratis. (Its a hideabed, and its comfy - references from JREFers available). To take a taxi to my house from the airport will set you back about $60. Getting to the cruiseship the next day will be gratis or close to it. PM me if you want details.

Checking into a cruiseship is easy-peasy. There will be signs and hordes of people. You're going to leave your luggage behind with a baggage guy and it will be tagged and appear magically in your room (or outside the door) on board. Most cruiselines are REALLY sticky about bringing in outside booze, I hear that pouring colourless alcoholic beverages into water bottles can fool them - and put such contraband in your checked luggage. You'll then follow a herd of people, you'll probably have some customs forms to fill out, and then you will queue up to get your room key etc... You will need to leave a credit card or cash deposit when you check in, because your room key is also your charge card for drinks etc... when on board. You'll also probably have a digital photo taken of yourself for security purposes.

What to bring? Well, I haven't been to Alaska. Vancouver in late August, early September will be warm - high 20's / low 30's (centigrade) so light summer clothing is fine. In Vancouver, ALWAYS have light raingear handy, unless you're a local in which case you're used to just being damp all the time. For the cruise, you'll want one or two 'dressier' outfits since people tend to like to dress up for some dinners. Exercise / bathing suit if you intend to use any of the cruise facilities. Otherwise, casual attire is fine. I'd throw in a medium-weight jacket for the evenings and Alaska, in case it gets cool, but I doubt it gets THAT cold in early Sept. You may want to bring some decent walking shoes both for the ship and for offshore excursions.

I am not going, :( , but I worked on a cruise ship in Alaska last summer, so let me give you my few little suggestions for things to do in port.

Vancouver, it looks like you've got under control. If anybody after the cruise can make it over to Victoria, you can have tea at the Empress and hit the Butchart Gardens, which are always spectacular. The British Columbia Museum is also very good.

Ketchican is most memorable to me because of three out-of-sight restaurants. The Burger Queen is very close to the dock, on the north side of the tunnel. You'll see the tunnel. The crew on my ship would flock to the Burger Queen and get their burgers to go. They are handmade, cooked to order, and OMG. If you head into town, you'll find the Pioneer Cafe. Big plates of hardcore diner food. I still dream about the country fried steak and egg platter. Evil, it is.

OK, maybe you don't want so much starch and grease. Fine. Ask for the Thai place. It's a couple of blocks past the Pioneer, and I can't remember the name, but it is brilliant. And going to Dolly's House seems to be a must, if only to see the power tools.

Juneau, I remember less vividly (because I always took a shuttle to the big department stores they have there). You'll probably head out to the Mendenhall Glacier, and that's a great tour. There's a couple of cool coffee shops in Juneau, and the state museum is worth an hour if you pass it by. My favorite tour here was a tossup between a hike out to the Gloryhole (the big strip mine) or the Alaska Gastineau gold mine south of town, which is really well thought out and run by a great family. Oh, there's the Alaska Brewing Company tour, with free samples.

I only went to the Hubbard twice, but it is nice. I never made it to Icy Strait Point. If you can go zip-lining, I would recommend it. Fun, fun.

I envy you guys, and hope to hit a JREF cruise one of these days. Enjoy!

First, take a deep breath. Next, immediately PM Antiquehunter and take him up on his bed offer. It's a good deal - he is very nice and cute and friendly. He will save you mucho money on hotel rooms. You will meet all the cruisers at his bon voyage party.

As recommended, post your flight times here. I promise that SOMEONE will help you. Although everything at the airport might be noisy and confusing, there are signs everywhere, and you can ask people. Do you have a cell phone, or can borrow one? If so, when someone people respond and say they will help (and they will), you can exchange cell phone numbers and call them from the airport, etc.

Stick something to do in your carryon bags - a couple books, your latest cross stitch, whatever you like to do to keep your hands and mind occupied. This is not only for the flights, but sometimes on the ship you might wish you had something. I read by the pool some days.

Bring a camera! If you don't own one, buy a disposable.

Take another deep breath.

I see your comment about passports. If you don't have one yet, you'd better get thee straightaway to a passport office. The wait time is crazy, and I'm concerned you might not be able to get one this late. DON'T PANIC. For a fee you can get them expedited, but it's important that you do this immediately. If you have already done so, never mind. If you haven't you might need to look into going to Seattle and taking a shuttle. US seems up on that and might be able to give you advice.

I finally gave up on taking a land or sea crossing when none of them would work for the times/dates I wanted. I wish I'd gone to the place I did in January or February since I was in an out in about 15 minutes which was a lot less than the agonizing I'd done about the border crossing since then. With the changes that State/DHS/TSA have implemented I wouldn't be to worried about it (see the State website), but I'd still drop the extra money for the passport expediting so you can expidite your border crossing.

As GG said, DON'T PANIC. Just get to Vancouver the day before embarcation by air, or the day of by shuttle/rail and you'll be good to go. Once you're on the ship, you... er this is a JREF function.. we, can worry about getting you home a week later. :)

Me (Susan) Stirling & Mike will be leaving San Francisco on Saturday. Going to the Marriott hotel to stay the night. Hopefully Fitter will be able to take us to the party and bring us home. We could always take a taxi if all doesn't work out or we want to leave or arrive earlier or later than Fitter does.

We have the hotel and the tour the next day for Vancouver, then to the ship. Here is my flight info in case anyone else is arriving about the same time as us. We could always share a taxi to Downtown Hotel?

(I have named my baby, "Silly Darwin", cause sloths are evolution at perhaps it's most silly). I'm not very good at clinging upside down to trees. Resting I am very good at though. As tempting as visiting my adopted child for the week is... I'd rather go on the cruise.

I'm okay with "dressing for dinner" like an Agatha Christie novel, so long as I'm not the one who ends up with the steak knife in the back when the lights come back on. But seriously, that's at least two outfit changes a day. I'm going to need a bigger suitcase.

While I am not going on the cruise (aarrggh!!), I've been on the same cruise a few years ago and there is an excursion to one of the glaciers above Juneau (forget what it's called) via helicopter. You land on the glacier, get out, walk around, have a picnic, and are then brought back to the city. Not strenuous at all, but a fantastic experience! The best part was lifting off from the glacier and seeing over the huge ice "wall" to the Juneau Icefield...when I exclaimed to the helicopter pilot that's where I'd really like to visit he said in no uncertain terms that no, I really *didn't* want to go there...

If you do Dueling Banjos, from Deliverance, you so have to have someone record and post that! (No pressure.....since you already got your formal dress, you can use the ~5 weeks to learn how to pick it!)

But seriously, I have a travel guitar case you are welcome to borrow, in case you want to safely check your guitar for the plane ride. (Tested and passed on various small European airlines, and in falling down flights of stairs with me!) Sorry, no banjo travel case available!

Leatherman tool, no. SOME knives are classified as restricted weapons. Anything with a 'switch' or 'flick' mechanism is considered a restricted weapon. Butterfly knives for example, are a restricted weapon. I THINK there is also a restriction on blades over a certain length - I'm not sure you could stroll around Vancouver with a machete strapped to your leg (not that you need one - our jungle undergrowth is relatively well-maintained.)

But a simple folding pocket knife (swiss army knife for example) is fine, provided its in checked baggage.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cm/d19-13-2/d19-13-2-02-e.html

FYI - Mace / pepper spray is also considered a restricted weapon in Canada, as are most martial arts items like nunchakus, throwing stars etc...

Random stuff..

Rebecca: Stilletos are fine. And there are carts available if needed. And I'll have pockets.

Kitty: There is already a webcam in the room. However, you switched rooms. Don't tell Rich, OK?

US: Lots of folks wore uniforms last time. They got the most attention from the women.

El_Specter: No problem with Canada, but I've had problems getting on and off the ship. Best advice.. check it, and leave it in your cabin. (FWIW, I've always been able to talk my way into getting on board with it. It's not like airplane security.)

The Glacier helicopter ride in Juneau is THE thing to do. It's expensive, there's a weight limit, and you have to get up early. I've never done it.

I recommend not booking a lot of tours. Maybe one per port if you want to, and remember that you get tickets to the Mt. Roberts Tram included.

There is a topless sun bathing deck.

I spoke with Jami tonight and she's fretting over what sort of cocktail dress she should purchase for the formal nights. I told her to get something that fits from any place cheap that shows some cleaveage since her long red hair would distract attention away from whatever she was wearing.

I also offered to trim my 'stache down to a "Hitler" toothbrush style, but she wasn't very keen on the idea.

She's very excited about TAA2 and can't wait for it. :)

If any of you Skepchicks have forma attire advice apart from "head to Niemann Marcus" for a gal on a budget I'd appreciate it and will pass it along to her.

Head to 'Neiman Marcus Last Call Outlet Store'.

The crack cocaine of shopping.

Head to 'Neiman Marcus Last Call Outlet Store'.

The crack cocaine of shopping.

I guess I can safely second that.

US, there is a "Last Call" Neiman place in the Grapevine Mills Mall, but I would suggest, first, a place like SteinMart, which has good quality clothes but at discounted prices. In Hurst, right outside the Northeast Mall, is a store called "Nordstrom Rack" that is similar to the Neiman Marcus outlet. They also have shoes.

There are also stores called "Ross" that run along those lines. I've only shopped there once, several years ago, but I have friends who swear by them.

Another good place, that would be worth the drive to look for both cocktail wear as well as men's clothing, is Syms. Here's a link. (http://www.syms.com/about.asp)There is one in Plano, and one in Hurst at hwy 183 and Precinct Line. They have designer clothing that is marked from 50 to 80% original prices. When I went there a year ago, they had a section of after-five dresses.

I might offer that if she doesn't want to spring for a dress that she might not wear many times, to get rather a sparkly or fancy blouse and a plain pair of black pants or skirt, or a simple tank top but a lacy/sparkly shawl.

Don't forget thrift shops and consignment shops. Some of my best clothes are from thrift shops! They have a lot of junk, but also a few treasures if you happen to be lucky. People give away perfectly good clothes, sometimes things they've never even worn.

Good news! My 25 year old daughter Kristin managed to get time off work and will be coming with me.

SkepDoc, that's great! Maybe this time we'll have a bit of a better chance to chat. :-)

P.S. I don't get seasick. Irony.
