Just read an article on a poll done by Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. Rather expect the majority of people to have taken the poll to be church going christians which could explain some of the results.

What really got me going is compare this result:
Fully 44 percent of the American public now believes that Islam is more likely than other religions "to encourage violence among its believers."
With this:
Nearly four-in-ten (38 percent) say they would not vote for a well-qualified Muslim for president, and 17 percent would not vote for a well-qualified evangelical Christian. Fully 52 percent say they would not vote for a well-qualified atheist.
:(

Ok, so increasing numbers of the people they polled believe that Islam is more likely to encourage violence, but they are still better than a stinking atheist in the white house. http://members.cox.net/draft2/Smileys/ouch.gif http://members.cox.net/draft2/Smileys/shakehead.gif

Poll: Growing Number of Americans Say Islam Encourages Violence Among Followers, Religious Divides on Gay Marriage, Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=133-07242003)

What a bunch of ignorant people we've become. We would choose not to vote for a person based on their religion rather than merit. And what the big problem with an atheist president... maybe they just dont like a level-headed guy who rationalizes with logic before faith...

I find this very disappointing.

Perhaps they'll begin a "don't ask don't tell" policy in politics?

Now why would a politician want to do that? Letting Americans know your a good Christian is a sure way to gain votes and credibility...

Personally, I think that if a prez is gonna have access to our nuclear stockpile, I'd rather have an atheist with no belief in an afterlife.

Kinda explains why we see all those television clips of politicians in church or praying during election campaigns.

It is ironic that Jefferson, Franklin, Adams and other founding fathers were Deist (and this was before Charles Darwin) and yet so few people today would vote for a well qualified atheist for president. Maybe we are going backwards in time (or at least temporarily stuck in a muddy backwash). Most Americans are completely unaware that we have had an atheist President - Ulysses S. Grant. (Yes there certainly are atheist in foxholes).

There seems to be some disagreement about it.
