Oops. (http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,21465724-2682,00.html) Kids, don't try this at home.
"He whacked his hand down on the first cup and it was fine. Then he whacked his hand down on the second cup and it was fine and then he whacked his hand on the third cup and it went straight through the blade."
Hultgren, who has performed all over the world and made history when he swallowed a sword while submerged in a tank full of sharks, remained calm and pulled the blade from his hand.
"He stayed calm and said: 'This isn't part of the show, you will have to go now'," Ms Walsh said. "There was blood everywhere . . . we knew something was very wrong."

There are such things as dangerous magic tricks...
I'm impressed with how he handled it, though.

Quite a few performers have gashed or impaled themselves accidentally doing similar feats. I believe Chris Korn did so on one of his television shows.
Most of the performers were simply careless.
If memory serves, David Copperfield was careless during one of his performances, cutting off part of one of his fingers with a scissors. Like Hultgren, Copperfield stayed calm and informed the audience that he had hurt himself, and he promptly sought medical attention.

I've seen a few YouTube (or sumesuch) videos of performers screwing up the very same trick in the same way. In one of them, it is the audience member that the magician has slamming their hands down on the cups.
They were all brutal to watch, especially since you knew what was coming.

Oh man, Malaka, I watched that and it was the most cringe-worthy piece of video I've ever seen in my life.

Hey, there's this video of Karl Rove dancing on YouTube that might top that. . .

I've seen a video of the spectator getting impaled, and boy was she angry!
Dunno what kind of lawsuit followed-it was in the U.K.
