I must say such reports are mind-boggling for us non-Americans. Heck, Canada is considered by many just another (albeit large) US state, but it caused quite a bit of unease when Prime Minister Harper concluded a speech with "God Bless Canada" a year or so ago.

I think "half" is singular like "group". The group rejects evolution while the group members reject evolution.

Turn the poll around and look at it from the other side:

While only 9% of the people polled said that they do not believe in God, more than half said that they believe in evolution.

Seems irresponsible of them not to include a link to the original report, which is here (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17879317/site/newsweek/), and grammatically more to my liking.
