I can attest for that. I habited a small place in the smack middle of the countryside in france. I helped dig some fundation, a garage , a cave and some tower opf a castle. In all case we found various artifact including :
* bones of various animals in various state
* exploded (and unfunilly) unexploded munition, including 55mm shells
* intact potery, including some strange chinese vase with 3 long openning
* a strange insect (the first time I saw an insect of more than 10 cm of diameter in france...).
* various metalic items, many unrecognizable due to the oxydation
* money (coins. Some even dating from the second war).
For the cave dig, we dug so many metal that you could pile it up knee high.
MY experience is that it is difficult NOT to find something up when you dig into inhabited place.
