Religions have always taken advantage of people in times of tragedy, they know people are vulnerable and see it as an opportunity to snag more punters. Just more chances for them to say "believe or suffer". More opportunities for them to control the faithful with fear and terror.

I am honor-bound to do nothing. In my experience, honor is generally an excuse to be an idiot. The excuses here are worse because something is being offered that cannot be provided. At least I haven't been given a fake number, I can say that much.
