Another weather balloon I think.

I don't think we have enough information to even guess. The pilot keeps saying 'it was a mile wide', but I'm curious to know how he might have even gauged that. Past a very short distance, estimating size of an unknown object is impossible. You see a plane in the distance, you know only that it's big because you know planes are big. Therefore the object would need to be close to something known to get a feel for the size. And there's no indication of that.

*sigh* I hate non-skeptical reporting. It would have taken just a couple of the right questions to have demonstrated that there was a rational (even if still unknown) explanation.

Not only that, but an object a mile across in the sky must be a spectacular sight that no one in the area should've overlooked. So we would expect plenty of independant pictures and even movies. Where are they?

And with the proliferation of digital cameras and camera phones, no one on the flight was able to get a picture? I know you aren't supposed to have any electronic items powered on while taking off and landing, but surely someone on the plane was carrying something to take a picture with.

An object a mile in diameter would appear to be the size of the moon at an altitude of 110 miles.

Was this reported on April 1st? If it was, the most likely explanation was a set up by the TV station.

If it wasn't, then I am glad I wasn't flying with this pilot, if he can confuse an object that was large, thin and lying horizontal forty miles away, with a weather balloon, that is relatively small, long and vertical.

The other explanation is that he really did see an unusual object, which matched his sketch. However, this is a local TV news item, and there is never any time for searching questions and detailed responses. As for photographs, it may transpire that some of the passengers did indeed take some shots, but this has not yet been picked up by the station. They did however, appeal for general shots of UFOs from the public at the end of the item, so maybe something may eventually turn up from this particular event.

Verdict to date? It was definitely an unidentified flying object.

I think that's a file photo, and not one of the actual incident. For one thing, there's no mention that it is of the actual UFO. And another, there are two lights in the photo, while the incident only had a single object.

I'd be interested to know what the radar details were. Speed, duration, size...the things that might be useful in determining what it was.

The BBC report only serves to confuse. The pilot on the film clip definitely said that there was one object, didn't mention any brightness, and the sketch he drew bore no relationship to the two bright lights that were referred to in the BBC report. In fact, the pilot was talking about a "fuselage" with some kind of darker features near one end.

Yes, confusing indeed. Seems to be the norm on UFOs eyewitnesses testimonies.

The pilot begins his account with one object around 40 miles away, the TV hosts also speak of one object. But at the end the pilot describes the presence of two objects, even pinpoints them on a chart. So? :boggled:

Also, how could he possibly make out the details on the "fuselage" (a dark area in the middle) from a distance of 40 miles?

I have just phoned my brother who lives in Jersey because, I mean, well, obviously he is on the spot. He is almost certain it was a UFO with probably blue flashing lights and someone said they'd seen some little green men too. However, he did not know whether it had landed at Jersey airport!
