Hey all,

I've been a Randi fan for a short while now (I saw him in speak in ~2001 or 2002 at NASA's Johnson Space Center where I was working at the time) but have mostly just lurked in this forum. I figure it's time to pop my posting cherry.

I admit it, I'm an avid fan of conspiracy theories. From the Apollo hoax to 9/11 to the allegations that the moon is actually an artificial satellite, I find conspiracies hugely entertaining. They are, of course, bullshiat but I'm certainly not one to let that get in the way of a good laugh.

In browsing sites that cater to CTers. I've noticed what practically amounts to a common Lexicon; it's as if they have their own language sub-culture. Given that the whole culture is about the regurgitation of somebody else's bullshiat (oft as their own) this should hardly be surprising.

So I'm here to find 25 words that the CTers love to use. They needn't be unique to CTers but they should be words that they'd used in a "debate."

I'll start us off:

1) so called

Fantastic stuff guys! Many thanks!

Welcome to the fora, DrivinWest.

Perhaps this is worthy of another thread? I suppose we'll see if interest warrants it.

As I was at JSC, home to (Manned) Mission Control and the Astronaut Corps, we really didn't have much to do with the JPL/Mars guys. I don't recall any of my higher ups or peers ever expressing an opinion on Hoagland and my guess is that most had never heard of the guy or his claims. Those of us at JSC who did take an interest in fighting the good fight usually took on the proponents of the Apollo hoax.

When I first started work at JSC I got to know many Apollo-era engineers, flight controllers, etc. (I had a chance encounter with Buzz Aldrin too - funny story which I'll come back to*). These guys had poured decades of their lives into the American manned space program and the notion that it was a fraud was beyond absurd; they personally experienced it and didn't have time for wackjobs who denied it.

I think the younger folk see it differently, probably ever since the internet permitted every fringe idea to have a global voice - these days, everybody has heard about the Apollo hoax theory. To most people's credit, they dismiss it as the hogwash that it is, but the idea itself still has legs (I can't tell you how many times I've been out on the town and heard, "So you work in Mission Control? Did we really land on the moon?"). As such, I think some of us are more proactive than our older peers about confronting the allegations. While it doesn't do a damn thing to convince the hardcore believers I'd like to think that we help set the average person straight.

* As a NASA mission controller I had to go for an annual physical, essentially to ensure that I didn't drop dead on console. During my annual in 2003 I went into the men's room to fill a urine sample per nurse's orders. Of course, that's not always the easiest thing to do on command! So there I stood facing the urinal for a while when the door opens and somebody walks in muttering under his breath. He walks up to the urinal next to mine and the muttering gets louder - and more obscene: F-this, full of S-that, etc. Trying to be casual about it, I look out of the corner of my eye and who do I see trying to piss in a cup and swearing under his breath? Buzz Aldrin.

Long story short, we make our deposits, wash up and head back to the waiting room where I introduce myself. We had a great conversation while we waited. This wasn't long after he punched Sibrel in the face - something I asked him to recount in detail!

I made one of these a while back:

http://forums.randi.org/imagehosting/1253245bf877dcd575.gif

And even filled one out for a kameelyun (was he a P'doh sock?) thread:

http://forums.randi.org/imagehosting/1253245bf877da60b8.gif

But he quit the thread shortly after that and I never got to finish filling it out.

IF you would like, I would gladly take some of these more specific CT'er arguments you're collecting and make a series of cards - mine was much more general.

Cool. I wouldn't mind if it said, "Smoke weed copiously (or act like you do)" instead.

And if it said, "Capitalize the word "Truth"".

And if "Anyone who does not agree is a Liar" could be in quotation marks.

Oh, and now I look at it more thoroughly, I notice it would be better if the same tense was used in each box. So, "Use one myth to support another" (rather than "Using one myth... etc").

"Use Smacco's Razor... etc."
"Have an inflated sense of self-esteem."
"Use Diatribe and Rhetoric."
"Be completely incredulous."
"Believe the minority of witnesses... etc."

Again, Minadin, I can't thank you enough for your help.

That's the sort of critique I was looking for. I was sort of worried about some of the verb tense disagreement that came about from blending your rather instructive credo with my more infinitive logic bingo. Check back in a couple hours.
