OK, this one needs explaining.

Why does Dylan throw a phone at the terror victim?
Why does the terror victim appear to be so happy?
Why does Dylan appear to be going into anaphlactic shock in the last frame?

OK...so he's like Elaine's doctor boyfriend on "Seinfeld" who yelled to the unconscious person, "Elevate your legs!"

ETA: The depiction of Dylan whistling was actually quite good...it's not easy working with such primitive drawing tools!

If you want to see something funny that pokes fun at skeptics, see the comics by Chipmunk or bob_kark that are on this page. They're funny, and rather true to life (sadly). Your perception of the members here may well be twisted, but it isn't funny.

I think the reason troofers are often humor-impaired is that having a sense of humor requires a little reasoning ability -- to "get the joke" you must be able to sense how the logic of the joke has been twisted into a humorous configuration.

Sadly, it seems that this is beyond the abilities of many troofers.

(WR's strips, by the way, remind me of comic strips created by seventh-graders for our junior-high newspaper. It's as if there were some secret inside joke that is somehow not able to escape.)

After creating your comic, pressing the Publish button, and confirming everything is correct, the site will show a full size image of your comic. Right-click on the image and select properties. Among other things it will list the filename with it's web address. Copy the whole web address to your clipboard.
To add the image to a post, click the Insert Image button (looks like two mountain peaks and the sun with a yellow sky) Paste the web address in and you're ready to go. If you can't find the button just paste the address in the reply window and put img and /img tags (with square brackets around them) before and after the address.

The patent for Tahitian Noni Juice is for use as a drain cleaner.

robinson
15th May 2007, 08:17 AM
Really? A quick check finds no evidence for that. There was this however:

Scientific studies have investigated noni's effect on the growth of cancerous tissue. One such study found that noni inhibited and reduced growth of the capillary vessels sprouting from human breast tumor explants and, at increased concentrations, the noni caused existing vessels to rapidly degenerate.

(January 2003) "Inhibition of angiogenic initiation and disruption of newly established human vascular networks by juice from Morinda citrifolia (noni)". Angiogenesis 6 (2): 143-9. ISSN 0969-6970.

Another scientific study showed one brand of noni juice to have prevented formation of cancer cells in rats (using detection methods of bio-chemical markers called DNA adducts). It further showed to reduce the number of DNA adducts in rats induced with carcinogenic DMBA, in some cases, by up to 90%. The same study then also looked at the effective anti-oxidant properties of this Tahitian Noni brand of noni juice, (via LPO and TNB-SAR assays) comparing with the free-radical properties of vitamin C, grape seed powder (GSP), and pycnogenol (PYC) at the daily dose per serving level recommended by U.S. RDAs or manufacturers. This noni juice brand was shown to be more effective than all three. Their conclusion: "The results suggest that prevention of carcinogen-DNA adduct formation and the antioxidant activity of TNJ may contribute to the cancer preventive effect of Morinda citrifolia."

Wang MY, Su C (December 2001). "Cancer preventive effect of Morinda citrifolia (Noni).". Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences 952: 161-8. PMID: 11795436.

Just to be sure we're reading the same thing, it's patent 4666606. If you click the "read this patent" button, it takes you to an image of the actual patent, with the search terms highlighted. "Noni" appears in col. 4, lines 50-68, and at least a few more times in col. 5 and 6.

It doesn't apear in the claims, which is the majority of the text on the page I directly linked to, but if you can get the image as mentioned above, you should see it.

ETA: tsg's link gives you a full text version of the description, so you could search that for "noni" as well.

In that Patent, Noni is the raw material for extracting Xeronine, the juice is not used. Oddly enough, I find other studies claiming there is no Xeronine in Noni at all.

Now back to them comix and stuff. Science is boring.

tsg
15th May 2007, 08:52 AM
It should also be noted that Dr. Ralph Heinicke, the listed inventor on the patent application, is on the Advisory Board (http://www.tahitiannoni.com/united_states/english/retail/company/press/spokespeople/doctors/19310-Dr.RalphHeinicke.html) of Tahitian Noni International.

At the time I was researching this (it may have changed since then), that was the only patent I could find for either Tahitian Noni or Dr. Ralph Heinicke, while the Tahitian Noni website included a claim of Noni Juice being patented. The patent claim appeared with the usual "non health claims" that allow them to lead you to believe it will cure everything from arthritis to cancer without having to be regulated by the FDA. Of course, what wasn't on the website was that the patent was for use as drain cleaner.

If there is a desire for further discussion, I would suggest starting another thread.

Nobody's going to take offense if you use the "wrong" character to make a comic. There's been quite a bit of variance over the course of this thread (Dylan Avery has been represented by different characters, for example). So have fun with it.

Making comix is hard. Is there a JREF approved character list somewhere? I don't want to use a CT character by mistake. Oh the pressure, the pressure.

It's more of an art than a science:

You can hotlink (since it's your own work, this doesn't violate the forum rules) using the IMG tag around the url of the picture (right-click on the full-size picture at stripgenerator.com, select properties, and copy the url)

Or, instead of the IMG tag, you can use the Insert Image button ( http://forums.randi.org/imagehosting/51224649f38a48d93.png (http://forums.randi.org/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=5785) ) --which is just a convenient way of letting the forum software insert the IMG tags for you.

Here's how to get best results:

1. Create strip at stripgenerator.com and Publish it.
2. Right-click the finished strip and save the image to your computer.
3. In JREF forum, click VB Image Host/Upload An Image.
4. Follow the instructions to upload the image.
5. When done uploading, a series of codes will be generated. Copy the code in the BB CODE IMG box.
6. Make a new post in this thread. Paste the code from the BB CODE IMG box.
7. Your hilarious cartoon will appear in all its full-sized glory.

Unfortunately, there's a limit to how many images you can host like that, so you may want to use the hotlinking option, otherwise you may get to a point where you have to delete an older one to put up a newer one.

I'll have to get around to saving all of mine off-line at some point.

I must concur with my celluloid friend - I like this guy. Nice use of avatar, good shading, intellectual yet approachable demeanor. A sure winner in the egghead category! :)

Although not precisely on the CT topic per se I still believe it upholds the thread quality.

(OK, I don't get out much anymore. Got a problem with that?)

At least you had a home... we used to live in a hole in the road... all sixteen of us.

A hole in the ground? Luxury! I woulda given my left eye for a nice comfy hole in the ground.

We had twenty three of us living in a soggy matchbox.

Me and me brother's would get up two hours before we went to bed and worked 36 hours a day in the bottom of a flooded mine.
