Hi, i'm new to the forum so i wasn't around when this issue was discussed. I'm trying to go through threads but i'm not getting any where. Can someone help explain Ross' argument? The way i read it he assumes a uniform compressive force without deformation on a 16 or 24 section of column. It appears to me the effect would be to shrink the column without losing any structural integrity? This is supposed to continue down for many floors during the collapse? Is this where the idea of symmetry comes from? He seems to be absorbing this energy ie: Hooke's Law. Any help with this would be much appreciated

There are some posts in the sticky:
I recomend starting here (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?p=1911440&highlight=ross#post1911440) . R Mackey is very good at explaining things--better than I, by quite a bit.

How does one explain someone elses fantasy?
Some people think that you could knock out a few columns and the ones above the gap will fall perfectly on to the ones below.
Basically, such people lack imagination.

That's imaginative...wrong but it really is quite imaginative. Sort of like how a magician pulls a tablecloth out from under a fully set dinner table :)
